Thanks guys, I arrive in... hmm 10 days!
-
Thanks I didn't think of that, I'll try once I have moved.
-
So you just give the contact details of your reference not a previously written out one?

Anyone have any experience of emigrating to CT and driving? I know it varies state to state, I actually contacted the DMV there but received two different answers by email - I don't think they even had any idea where I could drive on an international licence (before any "helpful" people tell me to google it). Anyone have any gems of wisdom? Have applied for an international licence just in case.

How do job references work in the USA? In the uk we just give details of two or three people, usually previous employers, and the new employer contacts them and arranges it directly themselves. I've heard people mention bringing reference letters to interviews, does this mean our references should write them ahead of time? Do they not get contacted about them?

Thanks everyone, you've given me a lot to look into. I don't care about tv but my wife watches a large amount of trash tv so....
thanks for all the great advice

Help! Have been looking through providers and where we will be living there is only Spectrum or Frontier. It looks like Frontier doesn't actually provide any TV so it'd have to be Spectrum and it just looks so so so incredibly expensive. And all the equipment you get here for free in the UK like a wifi router or DVR box is an added monthly extra to rent! Is this normal? And are there any clever options around this? Could we just buy internet and then have a smart TV with some sort of online provider that would give us the same channels? Or will we just have to bite the bullet and pay? Does any one have any experience over this? My wife is unfortunately no help on this despite living in USA all her life and just pays out what money she is told to regardless of whether she is being conned or not but I'd rather find out!

would love to visit new orleans, my in laws went recently and just complained constantly about there being so many homeless people there that kept begging from them. is this true or were they over exaggerating? as would love to go and do some sightseeing.

ps, i went on the cabot cheese factory tour with my wife when we went leaf peeping... you know they dye it orange because it sells better? Americans prefer to eat orange cheese.

I use Paws on Planes, they were absolutely amazing and understood all my stress, they did everything and it was worth every penny ( they were all the same price really)
Thanks! Got 2 kitty fur babies to move to Connecticut!

Aw that's so annoying, I think it'll be hard to convince an employer to let me work without a social security number even if it is perfectly legal, like you say it depends on them understanding hiring immigrants.

I got case complete today! Yay! Scan date was 23 Dec.

Hi visa chums,
Just thinking ahead whilst i wait on week 10 for my CC (do you hear the NVC laughing?). From reading around it sounds like it can take over a month for green cards and social security cards to turn up. In the U.K. I have a very flexible job, in the US I have no job and it'd suit my wife and I financially if we could wait until the green card and social security number were delivered before I hopped on the plane to move, just because I could spend the time earning money (all this moving is an expensive business).
Does anyone know about or have experience of doing this? Is the green card down to be processed as soon as the interview is done or is it triggered by you entering the country? Don't think I can face 2 months etc of not working
but everyone's stories I have read they've moved straight away and then been waiting home bored, has anyone waited before moving?

Just checking in, still no CC
scan date 23/12/16 from the UK, now on week 10 of waiting!
Can I just check, are you guys checking your statuses online and if so, what website are you using? Not sure if I'm being dim or mine just doesn't seem to be updated with anything.

I think a lot of you hit the nail on the head - I am from a culture where if someone says something racist etc we speak out and it's seen as a sort of enabling and bad taste not to speak out. I'll have to be careful about that in America because of the different culture.
As for appearing liberal and being friends with gay people we are a lesbian married couple so that's unavoidable. Thanks everyone for advice, I think we'll stay in Connecticut but if things get too much will consider moving and maybe until then just limit visits!

No thank goodness, we will have bought a house by the time my visa ever gets remotely sorted! Not that they haven't offered - like I say, to my face they're very nice. In America is not discussing religion or politics a big thing?

Looking for a bit of advice here, my wife and I are waiting on our visa for me to move to live with her in the USA from the UK. Whilst I'm generally looking forward to this there is one big worry - the in laws!
Whilst they're all polite to my face, my wife's family is very catholic, trump supporters and I personally find them a little racist, a little homophobic and a lot of their comments I find aren't what'd be acceptable at home in England. This has led to me starting to delete some of them on facebook so as to avoid looking at their nasty facebook statuses and avoid engaging with them in political debates because I really just think it's getting us no where but I'm aware that me disagreeing with them and thinking they're racist etc is probably making me unpopular. My wife is of the opinion that they are a bit racist and homophobic but they're her family and despite not agreeing with a lot of their views she loves them. I come from a family of non racist, non homophobic atheists who are usually on the same page for everything, I'm not really used to these sorts of people.
I haven't been in their family long but already I am the black sheep, do I stick to my guns and try to avoid them wherever possible once I move or should I bite my tongue when they make nasty remarks about mexicans or gays or whatever else it happens to be that day? Any thoughts welcome.

Thanks for your responses guys, it's nice knowing we're not the only ones having these issues!

Hi everyone!
First time poster long term reader here wondering if you could lend your opinions...
My wife is American and I'm English, we got married in February and after giving up on the UK visas decided we'd be moving to the USA to settle (partly because of my wife's mammoth student debts!). We just received our NOA1 but from reading forum posts I've come to the realisation that my wife and I are going to be apart for a very very long time. I've seen that it's ok to visit the US for shorter trips so long as you take proof of ties to the UK and proof of visa application.
I'm a nurse and my plan was to work temping for say 3 weeks and then visit for 2 weeks with my wife, then return to work for 3 weeks and go back and visit for 2 (as money allows). Do you think that would cause issues? What have you guys done to make the distance more bearable?
Help!
