  1.

I had that realization the other day when the husband and I were discussing places to move and I realized I was more into staying here.

I don't blame you! Wawa is awesome. Their sandwiches are so convenient when driving long distances/to the beach. (The only thing better is a pub sub but we don't have those up here, wah).

I am so excited to not have to pump my own gas once I finally get my driver's license.

We are probably going to move in a couple years because the property tax here is too crazy :( I like it here though, mostly, and yeah driving to the ocean is so nice..

Are you having trouble getting an NJ license or is it just your first time getting any license?

  2. Yes, Yes there is...

    go to

    http://www.kelloggs.com/en_US/kellogg-s-corn-pops-cereal-product.html

and then click on the 'where to buy' icon.

The Canadian ones are different, though. :( Ours are little hard spheres and they have a different taste.

I'm flying home tomorrow and I can't wait to get tim hortons. I'm going to get it before I leave the airport lol my family can wait for me to grab a double double.

  3. Chiggins, now that you mention the garborator, I had actually never seen one before coming to the US. I love it though. They're awesome. I guess it's because we had a rural home and I'm not sure if you can have those on a septic tank.

Hollywoodnorth, that is a good point.. I have lived in rural areas like I just mentioned, and also in the city.. but my husband lives in the suburbs. That is probably a big part of why it has been such a big change for me. We're in a townhouse, and even when I lived in the city I had detached homes... so that's new.. and I feel a bit on top of everyone else like they're always watching. And we have an HOA, which is also really foreign to me, and we get little annoying notices from them and they were like nazis about installing a satellite dish. lol

  4. Amicable Bride - I miss vinegar for the fries too!! My husband thinks it's insane. I also miss fish and chips shops. I want fish and chips with bread and butter and mushy peas and a pint of keith's! I make it at home sometimes but it's not the same. I also love Dad's Cookies. Oh my goodness, I can't believe your package ended up in Switzerland... WHAT!! I have heard of the post office mixing up Austria and Australia, but that's just nuts.

They have no idea about Canadian stuff at the USPS here.. our postal codes confuse them. I tried to explain, no, it's just a1a 1a1 format and I got a blank stare. Speaking of that, anytime my hubby is punching something into the GPS, I say "just use the postal code!!.. oh wait." Funny about the supper/dinner thing, my mom's family is originally from newfoundland and we also call it supper... I have gotten used to saying dinner over the years being born and raised in Ontario but my poppy would use that word for lunch.

I know how you feel about being isolated. I don't even have any in-laws here, my hubby was an only child and his parents have both passed. Does he have any other family or friends? I have become friends with his cousins, one of his aunts, and his best friend's wife. Or you could even get a job here even if it's just part-time and meet some friends that way! I hope you can have a great wedding regardless. It will take time but things will work out.

oh, yeah, nobody here knows what curling is either.

iPod - Funny I was just thinking about ordering swedish berries off of Amazon yesterday! I've been craving them like a mad man.

  5. I don't think I ever saw anything in Canada walking around other than ducks, black squirrels and the neighborhood cats. Since I've moved to the US in the 90's I've seen a whole world of wildlife I never would have thought. Not only locally, but on my road trips out of state too. Just in the city of Denver since I've been living here since the mid 2000's I've seen wild turkeys, elk, rattlesnakes, coyotes packs, tons of rabbits, eagles and that's in the city (not the suburbs).

So from what I've seen, I love hiking and walking around here a hell of a lot more than I did when I lived in Ontario where all there was, was the same types of trees and the same boring animals. Instead I get treelines, cactus, yucca plants, evergreen forests, great plains, mountain tundra, desert red rocks just within an hour of my place. And that's here in Denver. Anytime I go see family or friends in Florida or Texas or Arizona, there's a whole other world there which I've just never found anywhere I've been to in Canada when it comes to the outdoors...

Interesting perspective, maybe I should move to Denver then! :) Did you hike much in Canada? That's weird. I guess I can't expect much in nature from NJ, isn't it the most densely populated state in the country?

  6. Oh how I miss going for walks. I will walk around the block here but it's not as enjoyable. I used to live about 20 mins out side of the city in Canada there was nothing at all but trees and lakes when I went for a walk.

Me too! When I lived with my parents we lived outside of a city in southern Ontario, right on a hiking trail. It was so nice. I would see deer, beavers, muskrats, coyotes, foxes, shrews, all sorts of cool little animals.. when I lived in Thunder Bay, same story, lots of trails and not far from many excellent provincial parks. I saw a wolf on the campus once, people have seen lynx too, and you'd see bear's claw marks on the trees. Here we go to the pine barrens in the summer and go hiking for 5 hours sometimes and camping too and we don't see a single animal! It's so weird! It's nice not having to worry about bears, though. Although I have noticed there are lots of beautiful birds around here that I'm not used to seeing.

  7. That sounds like an awesome service Ontarkie. My town doesn't even have buses... I think they were trying to keep the lower-income people out or something like that. It's mostly retirement age people around here. It is inconvenient though, I used to take public transit even when I had a vehicle back in Canada.

My husband thinks the same way, he finds it so strange that Canadians are more laid back about getting their license. I got my G2 at 19 but didn't get my G until I was 21. On the other hand I read somewhere that fewer American teenagers are getting their license today than used to. I know that here in NJ it's now a pretty difficult process for teenagers to get them, according to my friend.. her daughter is 17 now and had to jump through all kinds of hoops... and with people having less money around maybe they don't want to be bothered about buying their teenager a vehicle and adding them to their insurance policies.

  8. Yes it's not fun! oh my goodness. I've decided to just drive my vehicle back to canada and sell it. If anyone else has their vehicle in their parents' name, make sure you transfer it to your own name BEFORE you drive to the US. Otherwise it just gets way too complicated! We were so excited to get married and have me drive down right away after waiting so long for the visa, we really didn't plan things out properly. The foibles of being young and impatient.
