  1. Hello July filers!

I'm happy to share that we finally got our interview schedule for next month!

Please advise what to bring during the interview aside from the ones written in the notice/letter.

What proofs can we show? We just move to another state so we don't have much bills yet.

    Please help!

In my case, me and my husband did not have any bills in our names. What my IO was impressed with was my scrapbook (5 years worth of pics) and the notorized letters from my husband's parents and one of our best friend, in which they stated they supported or marriage, they witnessed being a couple and stuff like that.
  2. Here are the instructions directly from the Social Security Administration: https://faq.ssa.gov/link/portal/34011/34019/Article/2054/How-do-I-change-my-work-status-on-my-Social-Security-cardand more detail on the documents you will need depending on your exact status (click on the applicable options in the menus on the left) here: https://www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm. In addition to the filled-out form on the first link, I think you'll need your foreign passport, your new green card and a state-issued ID (driver's license or learner's permit or just an identification card). It's unclear whether mailing is realistically an option since they require original or notarized documents. It might be best to just go in person, assuming there is a fairly convenient local office.

In my interpretation, though, it might be best to change the SS card after naturalization rather than now (so that you don't have to do it twice), but I am interested to hear other opinions (I admit I haven't really thought about this too much yet). At the moment you can continue using the old Social Security card together with your green card, which is the "work authorization" called for. I don't see any downside to that.

At whichever point you decide to request the change, I have read on another immigration advice forum that it's better to go after 10-14 days from the most recent immigration status change so that -- hopefully -- the SSA will have the new info in the federal records. I am not convinced this is how it works, but mentioning it just in case. (Again, maybe other forum members who have had to deal with this might chime in on timing.) The SSA says you should get the new card within two weeks from application.

Thank you for the detailed reply!

  3. Hi, neuroticbell! I'm a Sep filer also with Buffalo field office. Would you mind sharing a little bit of your interview experience? I'd really appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

Sure thing! Me and my husband arrived there about an hour early, we drove from PA so we wanted to make sure we were there on time. When we we had to go through the metal detectors the guards joked with us asking what we were doing there seeing as both of us spoke perfect English. I found that funny and it put me in a more relaxed mood to be perfectly honest. We went up to the counter and let them know we were there and the waiting began. I think we waited about an hour and a half until the IO called us in. We went in and had to swear to tell the truth. The IO explained to us that the interview was going to take place in 2 parts, one to establish that our marriage was bonafide and the next to establish my entry in the US. He asked us what we brought as he saw my husband carrying a big black notebook. We showed him the scrapbook, a few extra pictures, letters from family and friends (that were notarized which pleased him). We explained why I was out of status for so long, why we didn't file for my paperwork sooner, why me and my husband didn't have more legal evidence of us being married (leases, bank accounts etc.). He said that although he wished we had more evidence, he understood the situation and that all of the pictures that I have submitted of our marriage through the years was more than enough. So he said on that part he was ready to approve us, sent my husband out and proceeded to question me about my J1 visa. After about 20 minutes of questions he said that something wasn't adding up, that it looked like I applyed for an F1 not a J1 and, although it might of not been my fault and although he believed I was being thruthful, he might have to deny us. My face dropped and he began to reassure me that even if that happens it's not the end, I can still file for a waiver. He stepped out trying to find his supervisor, the person who had the ultimate say so, but they were on lunch. He apologized and said he would push as hard as he could for an approval. All in all the interview took about an hour and a half because of my visa issues. I left feeling extremely disappointed and trying really hard to hope for the best. About 2 and a half hours after our interview we got the email that said my card was in production. I lost it of course lol. All in all, the Buffalo office and especially the IO was great to me. And honestly I hope you get the same IO, if it weren't for him being such a level headed nice person my case could have seriously taken a turn for the worst. Let me know if you have any questions! And best of luck.

  4. Just got out of the interview. My IO was extremely nice and on my marriage being legit part everything was ok and he was ready to approve us. Than something came up on my J1 and I might be looking at a possible denial. He wouldn't say exactly what alarmed him but he did make my husband step out while he asked me a million questions about my J1. Than finally he said that something in the case wasn't adding up and it looked like I applied for a student visa not a work visa (f1 not j1 which is what I had). That's all he would say. He tried to find his supervisor so he could give me an answer on the spot but the supervisor was on break. So the waiting starts. I don't even know how I feel right now, I just feel numb and wish for this to be over.
