  1. Shaun and Booker,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend getaway. I'm so glad to see that everything is going great. I have to agree about the communication part. I found it very strange that sometimes Wilmot and I could not understand each other with out a repeat or more talking. It is still happens even though we are close to his year anniversary arrival in the US.

    Best wishes!

  2. Frances,

Very nice thoughts and words of wisdom. Even though many of my friends from Liberia had shared many of these points with me before my husband arrived. It is very easy to forget as you are going about your daily interactions. I also try to explain to my husband my own culture and how I have been raised to think about husband's and wives roles. Then we try to look at both sides before we make a major decision or talk in-depth on a certain issue.

It has been easier since my husband has started working and our city has good bus system, so I think he was able to feel less dependent on me. Even to the point that he would get lost for several hours at a time, before he found where he was trying to go. It scared me but in hindsight I would say it also gave him the chance to be independent and be the man he was used to being before we were married.

  3. I'm so happy for you two. Also know you will not have to worry about anything going wrong! :) Wilmot is very happy for you both and can't wait to talk to Booker. I hope you and your family enjoy your night. Give us a call, when you can come up for air. Have a great night, and even though we haven't heard from you . . . I'm hoping and postive that Booker made it to you all in Texas!!

  4. We are at our 10 month mark. Your post is great. Like others have said it is great to hear that not everything goes like we all dream about. We have had some crazy fights but keep focusing on our future and try to build a stronger relationship. I'm just glad to hear other people's stories. Thank you so much for sharing.

  6. Reading this post brings me back to how I was feeling in Sept. and Oct. right before Wilmot arrived. I was lucky because I had some very supportive friends (actually one of them was who introduced us). I did not even tell my parents until he arrived, then we introduced him and a few weeks later we announced our marriage. The whole time I had many of the same thoughts you all have expressed. But I today he started his frist day at work. Things have been hard but I have not doubted his love or my decision once. But I remember really being anxious before he came. I would say keep your faith and remember that even high school sweethearts who have knowen each other forever can end up having a bad marriage. So do not let fears get in the way of your dreams, you will never know until you try. It just feels like we are taking bigger risks then others, because some people like to think that when you do something a little different then they did it will not work.

By the way I really love reading this forum, even thougth Wilmot came from the Netherlands he is orginally from Liberia. So all of your posts usually touch me and make sense to what I am going through.

  7. Funny that you would mention barber. Wilmot was the barber for most of his friends back home. It is funny to see how happy they are to have him hear and that he can cut thier hair.

Anyway he seems to be adjusting fine, but he hates all of the sitting around and I know he will be much happier when he is working. He also can not help but notice how big people are in the US and how much food we have here.

  8. I just wanted to send a quick update. Last Friday we received an email saying his permenant resident card was being requested and welcome ot america. I thought it was a mistake since we did not have an interview. But after some research on VJ, I came across other people who had the same experience. So today we received the greencard in the mail. Last week we recieved the work permit. This part of the process has gone differently then I thought. Of course I am not upset. Feels great the have a nice suprise.

  9. I can't wait to hear the good news! For some crazy reason, I'm having trouble sleeping. I'm so excited for the two of you. I can't wait for my wake up call telling me everything is fine. You two will be really happy and I can't wait to get together for a visit. I hope you are still calm, if you need someone to talk to.... give me a call I'm up and won't be going to sleep anytime soon.

  10. Glad to hear that things are moving forward for people. Quick update Wilmot and I sent in our AOS and EAD April 14th and received both of our noa 1 April 16th. He had his biometrics on May 18th. So we are were Em and Ed are just waiting.

Sorry I haven't been posting, but I had my laptop out of order for about 4 months. I should be able to check in and send updates from this point forward.

I think Wilmot is really sick of not working. He is still volunteering 3 nights a week, but he really would like to be working.

  11. Reading through all the posts it seems everyone is busy with moving forward in the stage they are at.

Best of luck Harry and Arazia on your situation. . . I did not tell my parents anything about Wilmot until he moved here because of some difficult things in our relationship over the past years. So please do what you feel is best. It is nice to get other people's opinions, even if you don't agree because they can help you look at the situation from another point of view.

    Em congratulations on your bio...

Mark I'm glad you have been able to get things ready to go, it must have been hard. I'm sure you and Michele are counting down the days!!!

Wilmot and I getting ready for his friends to come from all over the US and Europe for the wedding. We have everything in place for the ceremony to be on Friday, Dec. 29the and then a weekend filled with fun things to do with our friends for the New Year and our Wedding Celebration. 12. Mel,

That is great. Maybe everything will be set and you two will be together before the New Year. I was looking at some timelines and noticied that sometimes things moved faster at this time of year. Anyway waht great news!!!

Michele and Mark how is everything. .. you two will soon be together.

Arazia and Harry how much longer until Harry is here for his visit?

We have some progress to report, Wilmot recieved his social security card today. Monday, he will look for temporary work!!! Since we recieved the temporary work permit at POE! He is so excited. I'm a little nervous, it has been nice having him at home. But I'm happy for some extra money right before the wedding.
