I haven't received my NOA yet because of a mistake in my mailing address (see a few pages back)...
I have since called USCIS and informed them as such and they added a service request to my case. Think it's worth sending an 'e-request' (https://egov.uscis.gov/e-Request/Intro.do) and select "Did not receive notice by mail" to request the NOA?
Also, the NOA is called an I797C, right?
-
Most likely what the agent did is useless. she might just updated your address which is related to your A#, and since she didn't include your case number then your N400 address won't be updated. If you are lucky, the postman may know your apartment and then he puts the NOA in the right box[ if the same person delivers your mail daily]
Once you got your case number, hopefully you sent the notification form, you call them again and request an address update. Even if you didn't receive the NOA, Try to call them once your check is cashed and talk to Level 2 Agent and he/she should be able to find your case.
Make sure you receive a confirmation from the NBC that they updated your case. [ usually it comes in the mail after a week or 2 of the update request]
They won't stop your case if they got returned mail ! Just follow up with them until you make sure they updated your case .
Thanks for the reply. I actually have the case number from the text/email and was able to give that to her and it sounded like that's what was used to update the file on me.
I am fairly confident I should have received the NOA by now as people who sent after me, and live further away to the location, received them already. I also asked at the front desk of my apartment building and they said that most mail is returned if there is no unit number :/
-
When you get sent a notification for Biometrics, do you also get a text and an email (if signed up)?
-
Update - if anyone wanted one!
I called USCIS today and spoke to a really helpful lady who updated my address and gave me a case number for that action, which makes me hopeful. I just hope I haven't delayed my case. My fear is that they will get the returned mail from the NOA and stop my case... Hopefully I caught it in time.
Plus I feel like an idiot!

So, due to a weird error (that's somewhat my fault!) on the PDF, my apartment number was removed from my application, so it's doubtful I will receive my NOA

Hey all,
So, I was wondering where my NOA for my N-400 was, when I decided to check my application, and unbelievably, I have missed the apartment number from my current address...
I know how it happened - I printed it off to check everything and realized I had checked 'suite' instead of 'apartment.' So, I went back and checked apartment, printed the whole document off again (that was the only change), and sent it off. I just now went back and checked, and when you change a check mark on the address, it removes the suite/apartment number...
Well, what should I do now? Call USCIS in the morning? File a change of address (which doesn't make sense as I haven't changed address)?
I feel incredibly stupid right now...

Hi,
Can anyone tell how long does it take to get the text/email notification after the package is delivered? As per my tracking number, the package was delivered on Feb 6th early morning but I still have not received any notification.
I don't know if there is a particular set time for when you should expect the email/text confirmation, but I would be on the lookout tonight or tomorrow, especially if something was delivered on Friday. Maybe they opened it up yesterday, cashed the check today? Pure speculation, but I am sure they will get to it asap
I know this doesn't really help you, but hang tight

I haven't even read the latest 8938 scoop. The year it was mandatory, it was vague. I transferred up the chain calling IRS, arguing with each level and eventually spoke to the Tax Law Dept for 30-45 minutes. I didn't do it, even with the huge penalty threats. The IRS guy said off the record, he wouldn't either. The next year I thought it would be better explained. Not really. But because pensions are mentioned and my husband has a private pension with more years than you are old probably, I listed it. We have no exact value to put down, and failed at attempts to get an actual value because it isn't a pot of money with only his name on it. So the IRS got the name and address and account numbers of two private pensions and value is $0.00. I will read the latest when I start working on taxes to see if anything has changed for 2014.
Ah I see - thanks for the info. That makes sense about private pensions as the word pensions are mentioned. That's what had me concerned just now - thankfully it sounds like state pensions like the UK one aren't included in the filing requirements.
It sounds like you did everything you could to find the information needed. It's a shame everything seems so complex
-
Actually, I may have found my answer to the State Pension and FATCA/FBAR reporting:
‘Social Security’- type program benefits provided by a foreign government
Form 8938 - No
FBAR - No
http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Comparison-of-Form-8938-and-FBAR-Requirements
Phew!

Nope, but my husband has a UK bank account and never considered there would be UK income tax on it. Why do you think there would be? I believe the bank thinks he is still resident at his address. His Mum moved there after he left, so gets any mail. But he did file a P-85 to get back some taxes when he left. and the pension offices know he is in the US.
We have filed both FBAR and FATCA so kept up with US requirements. FATCA is $100,000 if married and includes pensions. He assumes his pension falls above that so just files it, naming his private pension funds and amount unknown.
Also, you mention private pensions for FBAR/FATCA - I assume these filing requirements do not include the UK Basic State Pension?
Quick edit - I am nowhere near retirement age, and only worked briefly (2 years) in the UK before moving to the US permanently right after University

I guess I just wondered if you were to put money in that UK account from US (already taxed) income, it might be classed as income in the UK. I guess that doesn't make sense really as ultimately, non residents don't pay UK tax on anything but income earned in the UK or from a UK source (from my understanding).
(I also filed a P85 years ago and became non resident).
So I guess someone who is a UK non resident can put any money from a US wage in a UK bank account and have no UK tax implications (while keeping the FBAR and Form 8938 up to date with the right authorities). Sound right?
-
Not answering your question, but foreign accounts totaling $10,000 (combined) have to be reported to the US http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businessso heads up to anybody leaving money in the UK.
Yup - always worth mentioning. That and potentially Form 8938 if accounts are $50k + (if single)
Haha, my UK account has less than ~ $500 in it at most times, so I don't need to worry about those extra forms to file!
Any other insight to the original question? I have to assume it's all ok as a non resident of the UK?
-
Hey there,
I saw something mentioned on another forum that talked about being non-resident in the UK for tax purposes and keeping a UK bank account, and had a quick question. I have been a non resident in the UK for several years now and I have no UK sourced income and no income arising in the UK (and visit for a max of 8 days a year). Therefore I have confirmed with HRMC that I do not need to file any self assessment or any tax forms in the UK since leaving permanently.
With that being said, are there any UK tax implications for putting about £50-£100 a month into my UK checking/current account? It's just a checking account (with no interest) that I use to put money in to pay off my student loan (direct debit).
This is money that has been taxed in the US, and I would assume with being a non-resident, that I can use this bank account for whatever reason I want without any tax concern...
Any thoughts on this?

I agree with what Deidre said - I know some states have county records publicly available online (so you can pay your tickets online for example).
If all else fails, answer the best you can and let the IO know at the interview stage would be my advice. It seems most speeding violations are not even an issue during this stage. If any were DUI related, then that would be a different story

Saw my check had been cashed!

2015 US Passport Application Tracker List -
Just got my text message and email saying:
Your case has been accepted and routed to the USCIS National Benefits Center for processing
Glad it got there ok! Waiting for the I-797 to arrive in the mail
-
Absolutely. I've never heard anything differently; unless the job specifically requires citizenship you can work it as anybody else. Go work at a bank, a car dealership, a strip club, whatever floats your boat. Something like an H1B is tied to a specific employer, but a green card is not.
Your oversight on the original N-400 sounds incredibly minor. Just mention it at the time and don't worry about it!
Thank you so much for the info! Yeah, I am fairly certain I have heard of other green card holders having received a 1099-misc or filing a W9 with a company. I believe a green card allows you to work any job (unless specified, such as a government job)
I think I was just overthinking everything now that my application has been sent!
-
W9 is requested from the business, and this form is not submitted to IRS.
Right, I meant filed with the business
Either way, it sounds like I am 100% allowed to work at a contractor, receive a 1099 and file a W9 with the company as a green card holder
-
GreenCard holder is eligible to file a W9, then receive 1099-misc from that company.
Were you requested to file W9 form?
Thanks for the clarification! I really appreciate that!
I am pretty sure I did (it was a long time ago) - I know I received a 1099 from them and filed my taxes appropriately, so that suggests I did indeed file a W9 with them
-
It won't delay. And there is no need to send an updated N-400. Just let them know at the time of interview.
On a similar note - it's ok for green card holders to file a W9 to a business as an independent contractor and get a 1099-misc, right? It's only people who are not US resident who shouldn't be getting 1099-misc's right?
Not sure why I am freaking out about this now! I am fairly sure I remember a W9 saying US persons can file this form as long as they are a US resident...
-
Just got notice from FedEx that my packet was delivered 2 days early! It's in their hands now
Good luck to all filers
-
Resorted by sent date and re adding instructions back!
Ah sorry about that! Thank you!!

Thanks again, and good to know. I feel like a fool for forgetting it - I spent so much time on the application and assumed I had everything under control. I guess it's just disappointing to forget something :/
-
Yes, you can.
Good to hear - phew. And I doubt it would cause any delays or problems? I would probably just add it to my additional information sheet I had for jobs that I worked a freelance gig...
No need to send an updated N-400 ahead of time?

Scratch that, I tried to do an e-request, but I have to wait 30 days... :/
I just hope I don't miss my biometrics notice.
