  1. Flames... what did you do with your military pension? (you were in the military I think?) Were you able to transfer it to an IRA in the USA or somethign similar, or will you just draw it from Canada when the time comes?

Mineis a Government pension, and they want me to take it somewhere with me... I just haven't figured out where!

  2. I don't think such a thing would be feasible. Look at how long it takes for people who get married to get an EAD.

That said, snugglebunny and I had fleetingly considered my taking a leave of absence and going over there, but as the limit is 6 months and I'd have to either give up my apartment or pay rent while not working... it seemed crazy. I wasn't willing to do all that on a "trial basis". He had to finally give in and agree to marry me.

  3. I keep telling you guys... buy two flat sheets you like out of the sale bin... sew 'em together...presto! A lovely duvet cover. No flowers or frills (unless you want 'em)

Do you guys use them as sheets, or do you use sheets underneath them? I find a lot of the covers you find in shops have decorative items like buttons and piping that make them more of a decorative cover than a sheet. I just throw mine in the wash and replace them like regular sheets.

  4. FDA, or whoever, said Teflon is ok, and especially if there is food in the pan the toxic gas or whatever it is won't hurt you. But don't let it flake. And don't use metal on it.

I recently saw a review in Cook's Illustrated saying that T-Fal's Jamie Oliver line was very good. And Wolfgang Puck's was good and less expensive. They also like Farberware. I think you can probably find those in Wally World.

  5. We're trying to sort out what to do with my pension. I have one with work, and when I leave, they give it to me in a lump sum, but it has to be transferred into a locked account. I am guessing that would be an IRA in the US?

Also, I have money that is in excess of the tax sheltered amount. They will also give that to me in a lump sum, but I will have to pay taxes on it unless I put it in an RRSP. Is a Canadian RRSP a useful thing when I am living in the USA? Would it be better to put it in something in the US? But then I'll pay tax.

    Anyone transfer a pension before?

  6. Personally, I think immigration reform would be a good thing. This is tricky though. I am not sure how I feel, and there doesn't seem to be an easy answer - to me anyhow.

But.. I am not American (yet) so I will just sit back and watch!

  7. Isnt it the ILLEGALS calling for amnesty for themselves? LEAGAL immigrants dont need it, so i dont think the march is for all immigrants, again legal immigrants have come through legally, and do have the chance at rights and whatnot. The allround argument isnt on all immigrants, JUST the illegal ones.

Yes, the amnesty is for the illegals. The immigrant groups organizing the marches are calling for all immigrants to come out and support it.. they want to show how all immigrants do so much work that we can't live without them. The numbers thing, like someone mentioned.

Why they think immigrants who went through the long legal process will rush out to support amnesty, I don't know. All I am saying is that the march is being called an immigrant march by some because it isn't just the illegals who were called to come out and protest.

  8. Am I missing something here? if they are all illegal.......................why are they showing their faces on national television?

They aren't all illegal. I believe the march is meant to include immigrants in general, to show how much gets done by immigrants in the day to day, and this is why you should let the illegals stay, because they do a lot blah blah blah.

  9. well, I guess photos aren't supposed to be acceptable as proof anyhow, so that is why I am surprised that they sent them back requesting date stamps. (I sent boarding passes and receipts. My pics were just colour photocopies, thrown in because I had them on hand.)

    I am crabby today!

  10. Yeah, as I said, that's my first choice but my husband doesn't like it.

aaaaaw! that's cute. My guy would pack my back and send me off to find a job. :P

I hope you find a solution that works for you both!

  11. Are your soon-to-be in-lwas really that bad? (not that I'd wanna do it...) Any friends who might have a basement or spare room they are willing to rent out?

You've come this far, I wouldn't start messing with half-truths etc now. I know it is a pain to part, but why not go to the US alone and settle in? Your husband can always come and visit frequently. I also gather you will have to stash all your belongings somewhere when you cross, you can't take them withyou At least he can't.

On another note - Agent Smith, you said the border folks can tell you have a K1 petion ongoing? Really? From putting your name in the computer? Is that the USC's name or the beneficiary's name? Asking cuz I never use the term "fiance" and would probably say boyfriend when I cross next... don't want to raise any red flags!
