  1. My friend got a programming job with no CS degree and no experience. I would keep trying through honest means.

My apologies for thinking it was an Indian circle, but if it is not, then it makes it all the more suspicious that they would contact you and suggest you fake it, unless there is another network for your country. If someone contacted me and told me to do that I would tell the police. So they suggest this to you knowing you won't tell on them, how did they pick you?

I would love to know in which state she got programming job without degree and experience and would like to move to that state.

They found my resume on careerbuilder and contacted me. They said if i just want training then i will have to pay and if i want placement too then i no need to pay but make changes in resume and sign contract with them upon landing on a job. I googled about them online and they have placed people successfully and people are working. I think at the end of the day its you who has to work hard and show your skills at job. Resume is just for entering into the door.

I applied for so many jobs with original resume even if job was paying less or was an internship. I applied for so many internships last month, never got called for anything. On craigslist it says entry level with no experience but its not true, i never got called even for free internship with original resume.

Do me a favor, tell me the state and ask your friend tell you how she/he landed up in job without experience in this state.

  2. Maybe, but I still believe that this country has opportunities for people who are willing to work.

You could end up in the same place through honest means.

Maybe it's time to cut the home country's purse strings and strike out on your own without "special consultant" help.

FYI, i went to AppleOne for seeking help in employment. I wanted to get even temporary work to start so that i could gain experience. I filled application online at center and manager took my interview. I told her clearly that i am in need of work and worked as manager. I am fine with even temporary or tem to perm role. She said she had great opportunity for me in a good company and pay was great, it was temp to perm job so agreed to go for interview. As it was scheduling work and i didnt have experience in scheduling she suggested me to make changes in resume, she asked me to write admin instead of operational manager as my last designation and asked me to write admin and schedule expert in subject line. I went to interview after doing all this and found out that employer was looking to fill 'sales person on phone' position.

I think AppleOne is an American company if not then somebody can correct me.

  3. I know many people who have gone this route.

The way it happens is you land on a plane from Mumbai and they put you on your first assignment. You are humiliated and you wash out. It takes maybe a week.

Then the same consulting firm places you somewhere else. The same thing happens, but you go a few days more.

The cycle repeats itself. You are moved from client to client for a while. Now, unless you're some kind of abject fool, you've been trying all along. What happens when you try? You learn. You eventually become someone who can contribute to a project. And then you stick. And then you get laid off again at the first RIF, because while decent you're just not quite good enough to keep around after a reorg.

And by then, you have a real resume.

Life goes on. It's not all kittens and roses.

My only concern is background check.

How they do background check and never find out about work history?

  4. Are they going to charge you for the training?

You say you have IT knowledge, can you elaborate? What is the source of your knowledge? How have you used this knowledge in the past?

Are you willing to take a position commensurate with your actual experience/knowledge levels?

They are not charging anything its free training.

I already have knowledge of sql, java, html (i think everybody knows it) and R just need to brush up my skills.

I tried alot with my real resume with no experience, recently passed an interview and written test but hiring manager appreciated me old me on my face since i don't have any experience she can's hire me even though i achieved highest marks. This was highly disappointing. She hired somebody who had more experience on resume and less talent who knows that experience is real or not. If i had made little changes in resume i must have been working on job right now not sitting at home.

  5. In the midst of job search one consulting company approached me (since i have IT knowledge) and promised me a great job with excellent benefits. They told me that i have to just brush-up my IT skills for which they will provide a couple weeks training and i have to alter my resume. Since i don't have IT experience in US they will put fake experience for around 4+ years and i will land up in job. On the top of everything they said every consulting company is doing it so its pretty normal to fake experience of 5+ years. I am pretty shocked and talked to one of my friends working in IT and he said its working normally these days in IT. I am jobless and really want job right now. I really want to know if somebody got job by faking experience in IT. Does it really work? If not then what are the possible consequences?

  6. Why is everyone tearing apart his writing skills? He came asking if anyone had advice on employment, not written or language skills. He has a masters, it isn't as though he isn't educated. He said his degree is up to US standards, he doesn't need to go back to school.

OP: It took my husband 10 full months after he was in the US to find a job in is field, he sent literally hundreds of resumes and went on dozens of interviews with no luck. In the interim he worked at Walmart just because he was bored sitting around at home. The job he was finally hired for in his field was as an intern, he had to get his foot in the door somewhere and not many companies are willing to hire a new immigrant with no US experience. The internship was for 6 months but the company ended up hiring him permanently after 4 months, with a good salary and very good benefits. His degree is up to US standards like yours, but the economy is tough even for US citizens who were born and educated here. The only thing you can do is keep trying and make sure your resume is up to US standards. There are many online sites to compare and help build your resume if you aren't sure if it is. Something will come up you just need to be patient. Like I said in his economy it's tough for everyone out there.

    Good luck

I thank everyone for their time but this is the most useful and encouraging advice so far. I think yes trying is the only key.

  7. You know what? When I read threads like this I'm SO glad that I'm just an ordinary working grunt that doesn't have to worry about all things "professional." Appearance, education, grammar, spelling - all complete non-issues when you spend your working day surrounded by hogs in various states of dismemberment!

Hey, newbud - my place is always hiring. And English is most definitely not a requirement (ditto education, good moral character, the ability to walk upright, etc....)

    Thanks for the support

  8. Two spaces was the old standard. In the digital age, it's more common to see one space or no spaces after a full stop.

That said, I still type with two spaces after a period as that's how I was taught when I first learned to touch-type. My younger colleagues tend to use one stop after a period.

OP, I think the general advice of networking would apply to your situation (informational interviews) as well as making sure you have a decent profile on LinkedIn. There must be a relevant membership organisation, local chamber of commerce or meetup group that runs events that would be useful to attend. You need to put yourself out there and meet people face-to-face. Sending in resumes in response to job ads is usually unproductive and depressing.

Thanks for advice,i have started going to meet-ups and job fairs.Hope it helps me.

  9. If you want to talk about your original post, we can start with the first sentence:

I am in America for last 2 years having permanent green card.

The first issue here is with your verb tense, and in particular the "to be" verb tense. You use the present tense "I am" when you should be using the past participle perfect form "I have been." You're also using a present progressive (indicative) tense for "having" when you should be using the simple present indicative of "have." You're also missing the articles "the" and "a," and need another reference to the subject (you). Highlighted, here are the problem areas of the sentence:

I am in America for [] last 2 years [] having [] permanent green card.

With the proper grammar, this is what the sentence should look like:

I have been in America for the last 2 years I have a permanent green card.

Technically, however, this is also a run-on sentence (containing two independent clauses). The sentences should either be separated with a period, forming two sentences, or a semi-colon:

I have been in America for the last 2 years. I have a permanent green card.

I have been in America for the last 2 years; I have a permanent green card.

Please understand that I'm not trying to embarrass you. I speak other languages and I understand that it's really hard to become proficient in them, and fluency takes a lot of work. But you indicate you're frustrated that you cannot move into a certain level of job that you want, and as other posters have noted, managerial level jobs do typically require native fluency in the language that you'll be working in - presumably English.

I would strongly recommend that you look into your local community college for courses in basic English. They can test your reading and writing levels and place you in the appropriate class(es), where you can improve your skills to match the job that you would like to have.

Thanks. I have already worked as manager in my previous job, where i had to deal with customers on daily basis. Its just company couldn't renew contract to work in America so everybody was laid off. When new company tries to set its roots in different country and it's a customer services area, they always try to find people well-versed in native language. That was their first requirement for job application.I was promoted two times and pay was raised. So i can say that i already worked at job where english fluency was basic requirement.

  10. He is looking for a well paid management job. With the competition in the job market as it is, being able to write and speak with a high degree of fluency would definitely help. When I first read his original message I thought it was OK but not great. I would think twice before hiring him if the job had any writing requirements whatsoever.

To Newbud, here is a tip. When writing, there are always two spaces after a period at the end of a sentence. This is advice and not criticism. You are obviously smart and this is just a way to better demonstrate just how smart you are. I wish you luck in your job search because you are already putting in lots of hard work.

Thanks for advice.I am not writing here from the point of showing my writing skills.

In both my previous jobs nobody asked about my writing skills,i am fluent in english because english is official language in my home country.I think more than here,if you don't speak fluent english in my home country, you can't even get low level job.

If you apply for job with resume and don't get call back for interview, definitely its more than writing skills.

Whichever job interview i appeared for, nobody asked me to write a paragraph to find out grammatical errors.

I have never heard about it before, even my friends working as admin don't tell me that interviewer asked them to write paragraph in order to test their skills(it could happen with someone just i have not heard about it)

I think when you speak, they find out about your fluency and grammar and if you pass math or computer skills test and don't go to next interview level, its something other than writing skills.

I request all please don't read my post from the point of view of finding english grammatical errors,i am not trying to apply for english jobs.

  11. You also might want to get some tutoring or take a college class in English composition. The way you write, especially if you are writing a cover letter in a similar style, could be a bit of a turn off. My husband has a 9/10th grade education from another country and his grammar and usage of English is by far superior. I realize you are writing informally on here, but a few pointers in American English can't hurt.

Thanks for the advice.I worked as an english teacher in past and qualified IELTS international exam with 8.5 grade(on the scale of 9).I am not writing here to show my english writing skills.I don't know where you found the grammatical error in my writing and forced you to compare.I would appreciate any relevant support and suggestion to the topic.

  12. Have you considered a different field entirely? There are always laboring jobs, in landscaping or irrigation or construction. Then, if you have management skills you can work up. At any rate it would pay the bills for now. Often it's not about what you know but who you know, and getting out working at anything puts you in contact with so many prospective employers. Who knows, the person whose lawn you mow may have an opening in his or her company. Good luck with it, it's tough not seeing family for so long.

Thanks for support.Sales and management is totally different field than what i did back in my country.I can go back to cold calling sales entry level jobs any time, its easy to get but i don't see any growth in future(its same thing i did when i came so starting from it again is no use). Now the things seem more difficult than when i came here.

  13. What i can advise you to do us get a US education. You can apply for a loan and go for Masters like MBA. I have 6.5 years of work experience in U.S and if I didnt have an MBA from U.S, there was no way I could get a job. Recruiters want to see U.S education.

Thanks for the advice. Many people have suggested me about it and i am planning it but first i want job to survive. When i came people said recruiters look for US experience, now i have it on resume and what's the guarantee of getting good job after getting degree, this is what i am worried about. Also i am planning to get relevant job and then get few relevant certifications to enhance career.

Its not that i don't like studying, its i have studied lot in home country(have double masters).

I would get in touch with a recruiter, and seek out companies you are interested in and go for "informational interviews."

what's the meaning of 'informational interviews'

  14. I am in America for last 2 years having permanent green card. When i came i found it hard to get job in spite of holding masters degree.(even i got my degrees evaluated they are equivalent to US masters)But i got job with great hard work within 3 months(may be i sent around tons of resumes everyday)It was commissioned sales where i worked with undergrads but i excelled in job. After 10 months job was taking to my nerve as it was struggle everyday and my manager became my good friend,he also came in US 10 years back so kept on suggesting me that you got better skills ,better try for good jobs.He kept on telling me his story that how he got struck in here and now does not want to move to other jobs due to family priorities. So i quit within 10 months(as that job was part time, struggling and couldn't pay my bills).Last year again when job search came,i went through hell. After 3 months struggle i got management job where i got paid well. Now this company got laid off 2 months back(it was a foreign company couldn't renew contract to work in US this year)so everyone lost job.Now again i am sitting at home applying for jobs everyday,no luck.I have US management experience to write on resume. Its been 2 months ,i learnt new computer skills and added them on resume along with 2 years experience here, applying everyday but not getting any response.Since i came i couldn't go back to my home country to meet my people because of job(and money of course). Now i am planning to visit them in couple months only if i find job.

I am ready to relocate its on my resume, even trying to other states jobs but no luck.I applied on career builder, monster almost everywhere.I already contacted hiring agency ,they even sent me to an interview but it turned out that interviewer is looking for sales on phone person, but agency told me that it is admin job.So i said no even interviewer didn't want to hire me(after working as manager don't want to go back to cold calling sales role)Even a friend of mine tried for me in his ex company.I passed the test but didn't get hired. They emailed me my background does not fit(they were working on it for 15 days and if resume didn't fit why did they proceed with test,my friend got disappointed more than me.I think he worked in past as director of company so now doesn't have good hold on company but i can't say this to him)

I am disappointed right now, just not feeling good about anything.Since i came to america things have always been tough on work side.On the other side i was earning better in my home country.

I really need support and words of advice.

    Thanks
