Another thing to keep in mind is that your several months travel between your initial filing and the motion to reopen may affect meeting the physical and continuous presence requirements, depending on your previous travel history....especially if you were out of the US for more than 6 months on one trip.

Well, this is my second time that I go to my country since I came to the US in 2014. The first time was in feb 2017 and I only stayed for about a month. And the second one was last year and I had to stay for about three months ( as mentioned before, for some family circumstances).. Hopefully I hear something back from them soon.. Thanks for your reply :)

You can get a new interview scheduled by mailing them a letter requesting a new date. You may want to mention why you couldn’t attend the interview in that letter. When you will get the interview date depends on how busy your field office is.

Only if one doesn’t make such request within a year of the administrative closure, N400 application is permanently closed.

Thank you so much for your response! I did send them a written request to reopen my case and have explained in it the reason of my non-appearance for my interview. I hope to hear back from them soon..

  3. Hello everyone...

I applied for my naturalization, form N400. I was overseas when my interview was scheduled and could not attend it. I had to call USCIS from overseas to request to reschdule it and explain my situation, so I got a new appoinment  but was not able to attend it as well for the same reason. That new appoinment was about 20 days only from the previous appt. I had to go overseas and stay for about 3 months due to some family circumstances and could not afford to change the plane tickets or buy new ones cuz I was with my kids.. Tickets were so expensive.. I did not come back till early Feb, 2019..  So last week I received a notice from USCIS notifying me that my case was administratively closed. Is it worth to write a request to reopen it and mail it to my local field office? If so, how long does it take for the local field office (Jacksonville, Fl field office) to respond? And do they usually accept the request?

Hope to get a response asap.. Many thanks in advance!

Does filing the N400 online really have that big of an advantage over those who filed by mail? From what i have heard, it can only expedite the process of getting your biometrics appointment. I filed by mail and was able to get my biometrics completed 20 days after i mailed off my packet. Any thoughts??

If the time goes back to that point, I would definitely apply online..  At least at the Jacksonville office.. Whoever I know who have applied online, got thei interview scheduled within one-two months after their bios appt.. People who have even filed online after me have got theirs reviewed and scheduled.. So.. a big YES for the online application.

Look, the handful of people who post here from your field office are not representative of the overall pool of applicants.  USCIS publishes aggregate statistics on processing times and according to the website it takes 6.5 months to process 50% of applications in Jacksonville, FL, and 13 months to go through the rest.  You applied in May, which is only three months ago.  You're not falling behind.  You'd still be about average if you heard in November or December.

    Thank for your reply :)

I will be overseas in Nov through Feb.. So I am giving up..

A good post. I am in the same situation. Folks in my field office who filed after me, are getting interviews scheduled. I tried and found out that my background checks are done last month. Still over a month and no interviews. So it's not background check for sure in my case.

Biggest problem is there is no way to contact USCIS and try to resolve this issue. You can only do so if you are outside processing time frame (which can be as much as a year from now). That scares people. It worries them (do I need to wait for a year to even ask USCIS to look into it?). We all have lives to live, families to feed, places to go (sometimes due to responsibility, not just for enjoyment) and this unnecessary stress. When you have information that people around your filing timeframe are getting called for interview, your application is ready for interview and nothing is happening for you, you just can't plan for few months in advance.

That is exactly what's bothering me.. I have a trip overseas, and will stay for a while. I just don't want them to call me for interview while I am outside the US and reschedule it at the end.. My mom had a serious surgery, and I couldn't go visit her because of this, especially that I heard of those who have had their interview scheduled.

I am gonna give up on waiting, and just pretend that I did not apply, till I see some update notification in my email.

I would highly recommend people who are planning on applying anytime soon, at least at my field office (Jacksonville, Fl) to apply ONLINE .. I know for sure now that they do process them a lot faster.. within one month from you bio appt you get scheduled for an appt.

To be perfectly honest, from what I've noticed, an online application DOES seem to be processed quicker than hardcopy application, regardless of country of origin. Don't lose hope!

Thank you for your supportive reply! I am going overseas very soon and was hoping to get it done before I leave so that I don't have to reschedule it if they ever schedule me..

    Wouldn't that be profiling?

It could be.. But I think applying online is faster.. I have seen some other applicants from similar country category  or even worse having thei application processed faster.. I just wanted to see whether there are some of you who have been or are in the same situation and how long it took them before hearing anything back from USCIS. Thanks for your reply.

    Check out my timeline.

I applied based off marriage (married for 6, been in the US for 5) and had a 10 year PR card. I applied for naturalization in April 2018 using the online process. Got fingerprints done in May, got an interview two months later, and then approved & did the oath just this month. The Center where I applied isn't as busy as the other big cities.

I would assume since yours is much bigger, that might be the cause for delay? Hopefully, it will be over soon!

Thank you so much for your reply!

It is true that Jacksonville is a big city, but like I said, There is alot of people who have applied in the same field office as mine here  in Jacksonville about a month or two after me and they are already scheduled for the interview in September.. That's what is annoying me and got me  kinda worried a little bit..

  10. Hello everyone

I applied, by mail, for my citizenship based on a 3years-marriage. I have already got my 10year green card. I got married in 2013 and entered the US in 2014.

I mailed-in my application in May 2018, qnd had my fingerprints done on June 6th, 2018.

I have noticed that there is a lot of people who have filed online and in the same uscis center ( Jacksonville, fl), have already got their interview scheduled, and within less/more than a month from the date of their biometrics appt. The surprising thing to me was that some of them have applied online a month or two after me and have already got their interview scheduled for September while my status is still under active review..

What could it be? To be honest, I am sure now that appliying online makes it much faster than offline...

Has anyone of you been or is in the same situation as mine? If so, for how long did you wait before getting an appt for the interview?

  11. That is good. Wish yoh all the best!

I had my biometrics on June 6th, and still did not get any update to my case. The status is still case under active review.

I applied offline, and someone who applied online 6days after me, had his biometrics a day before mine ( on June 5th) and he already got an interview appoinment.. What is going on here?? Is it normal? I started to worry about this whole thing eventhough my backgroud is clear, I never commited any type of crime or illegal affair..

Even though the verbiage is different on the DHS and USCIS website, they are one in the same. To be honest, after your fingerprints, it can take anywhere from 3 months to 1 year for the oath ceremony- it all depends on how long the FBI check takes as well as your local office's backlog and availability for interview appointments.

Thank you so much for your reply. Based on some other applicants timelines, whoe have filed in the same field office, it took them about a month or a month and a half after their fingerprints appt to get their interview scheduled. So hopefully I hear something sometime soon..

  13. Hello everyone,

I had my fingerprints done on June 6th for my N400 applictaion.

The status on my DHS says "we reviewed you biometrics" up to now. However, when i check my case status on the uscis website, it is saying " casr is being actively reviewed".

My field office is jacksonville, fl.

For those of you who have applied in the same office and have had their interview appoinment or those of you  who are lawes, i would like if you share your citizenship experience with me. I would like to know how long after the biometrics appt. your case status changed to "in line for interview" or "scheduled for interview". We are planning on going overseas no later than November, and would like to get some information in this matter. I am really hoping that my case will be approved by that time..

    Best regard,

    Imane.

K-3 is obsolete, and K-4 is for a dependent of a K-3. CR-1/IR-1 are the visas still regularly being issued.

    Incorrect.

    1. It's 2 years, not 3.
    2. Your status is based on when you become an LPR, not when you file the petition or get the visa. For an immigrant visa, you become an LPR when you go through POE.

Oh yeah.. that's right! Sorry about that.. it's been almost 5 yrs since we went through all of that.. My bad memory.. 3 years of marriage to the same person is when it comes to naturalization ( the process that I am going through now).. thanks for the info.

  15. What in the world???? Seriously???

Well, I have been in the same process except that I am the applicant and not the petitioner. My husband is a US citizen. When you apply for a spouse visa then you are applying for K3/K4 Visa. And when you get approved, and based on how long you have been married you will be given either Cr-1 visa or IR-1.. CR-1 if you have been married for less than 3 years since the day of the petition. IR-1 if you have been married for more than 3 years the day of the petition.

P.S: Cr-1 stands for conditional resident.

And IR-1 stands for Immediate Relative.

Hope I didn't mess up things lol as it's been almost 5 years since we went through all of that.. good luck!

  16. Hello dear,

thank you so much for replying to my post. Yes i haven't been two years married yet ( May 22nd 2015 it will be 2 years God willig). I understand that i need a visa to travel to anycountry in the world, my question was about my HOME COUNTRY which is Algeria: I am gonna leave in the USA as a permanent resident ( greencard holder) and my question was about my visit to my home country if i will have to apply for tourist visa to visit my familly here in Algeria despite i am Algerian citizen. many thanks dear

Oh sorry dear i just read the answer of Ryan. It's clear to me now thank you so much for your time

Ok dear friends :) i am so satisfied with your answers  . I appreciate that, thank u so much for your time.

  17. It would appear that you recently got married--as in less than 2 years ago--so you will receive a 2 year conditional GC and will have to file for removal of conditions (ROC) using the I-751 form within 90 days of the expiration date on your conditional GC.

As Ryan states, your visa will be stamped and that will act as the I-551 (GC) until the actual card arrives--the visa expiration date is not an issue once it is used. You can use that stamp or the actual card to re-enter the US. The name on the travel documents must match the name in your passport. For international travel you will need a visa to enter any country that someone with an Algerian passport is required to obtain a visa for--there are exceptions to US GC holders so check that you have the proper travel documents before booking travel.

  18. Hello everyone. My visa was issued on June 22nd,2014 i have received my passport and the IV package on July 9th so I am gonna leave very soon in like two weeks and my visa will expire on December 2014. My questions are the following:

*** What if I reach December in the usa and my greedcard wouldn't be sentto me yet? In other sense, since my visa will expire in Dec does it mean that I wont be allowed to stay in the usa or it won't be a matter because it will be stamped.

*** After I receive my greencard which will expire after 10years will I need a visa to travel to my original country for family visit? I know tat I shouldnt exceed 6moths outside of te usa but don't know about if I should apply for tourst visa to my original country and I am citizen. My citizenship is Algerian.

    I would appreciate your answers.

    Many thanks.
