  1. I'm probably most nervous about this one. I don't think I'll get denied, but it seems like this is the application where more people tend to get RFEs, and the RFEs are sometimes for seemingly small/random things. I played it cool with every other filing up until now and just sent in the minimum, but for this one we've included:

    - Copy of my green card

    - Copies of our driving licenses showing the same address

    - Apartment leases and renewals spanning the length of our marriage

    - Federal and state transcripts for 2014, 2015. We will include 2016 if the transcript arrives in time, the online portal is giving us a LOT of problems accessing it.

    - Biannual bank statements for our checking account, plus the most recent statement

    - Bank statements for our savings account (opened Dec 2016)

    - Statement from my retirement plan showing husband as beneficiary

    - Statement from my life insurance showing husband as beneficiary

    - Statement from husband's ADD policy showing me as beneficiary

    - Joint car insurance policy from Aug 2015 (when we bought the car)-present

    - Joint health and dental policy cards

    - Copies of joint credit (3) and store (2) cards showing the same account numbers. Letters from each company stating when each of us became an authorized user/joint user on each card.

    - Photos, airline tickets, invites, etc. from 6 different trips over the past few years

    - Three letters from friends/family attesting to the authenticity of our marriage

    - Biannual copies of our joint cellphone  plan (plus the most recent)

Our cover letter also explains a few things that I feel they might question, such as the new savings account, the car insurance not spanning the total length of our marriage, etc.

  2. Hoping for some opinions on this. Hubby and I currently rent an apartment. Lease runs out at the end of August. We just signed a non-renewal letter and have received a letter back from our landlord stating that it's been rented out and we need to vacate by the end of our lease. We are hoping to buy a house but that process won't start until April. We file for ROC in 10 days.

Should we include the non-renewal letter and 'vacate' letter (they are addressed to the both of us), even though we don't currently have any documents to show that we will continue to live together after that time? We have included leases and renewal letters covering the time since our marriage. Our cover letter mentions our intent to buy a house later this year, as does one of the affidavits a friend wrote for us.

And yes, I probably am overthinking this :) I've been collecting bits and pieces of evidence for 2 years and now that it's almost time to file I'm anxious to get this right the first time around.

    Thanks!

  3. A Google search wasn't very fruitful, and I'm assuming that we're all good, but thought I'd check with you folks for peace of mind.

We (USC hubby and myself) are visiting the UK for the first time since I moved out here. I currently have my 2-year green card. Anything we need to do in advance? Anything extra we should bring? Problems we might run into?

  4. I used Dublin as my POE. It was as easy and pleasant as everyone else describes. I'm sure I did a review of it on here somewhere. The big bonus for me is landing in the US as a domestic flight and being able to just grab your bags and go- no waiting around after a long flight.

  5. This is something that my husband and I have been fretting over. Our best option would be to use the FMLA, 12 weeks without pay, although I could use my sick and personal days to make it so that I'd get paid for some of that time. I can actually take up to a year off but it would all be without pay, which would not be feasible for us. We're in a similar situation too, where we don't have any family members nearby who could help with childcare. I have no idea how that will all work when we decide to have a baby.

  6. They've been a pain but I haven't had anywhere near as much trouble as others have! Yikes!

When I first moved here I sent them the overseas assessment form and a letter from my hubby stating he would be supporting me financially while I waited for my work permit and looked for a job. I sent them a new assessment form when I got my first job here and they wanted £3 a month. Yup. I couldn't set up a direct debit for such a low amount so I thought hey, I'll just use that UK credit card that I keep to pay for things in £s, like when I get flowers sent to my mum for Mother's day. 6 months later I got a letter saying I was in arrears. Turned out there was a charge for using your credit card that nobody ever told me about!

Now every month I move $s from my bank account here into my £ bank account over there using Paypal, sending the money from my new $ email address to my old £ email address. It's such a ridiculous and drawn out process. I earn more in the job I have now so I was finally able to set up a direct debit for the amount that I pay every month. You'd think that with so many people being able to travel and move and whatnot, that they'd have a better and easier system set up for this by now.

One tip to keep ahead of the game with their letters. If you have an online account with them, you can click on 'correspondence' when you're logged in and it has a list and .pdf files of all the letters they've ever sent you. It's pretty handy being able to see them before the physical copy arrives.

  7. July filer here. Posted my renewal forms last week. This is what I put in my pack:

Top sheet of paper is the barcode page (with the three barcodes) that came with your EAD/AP card.

    EAD:

Two passport photos with your full name and alien registration number on the back.

    G-1145

    I-765

    Copy of your I-485 NOA1 (I-797C)

Copy of the front and back of your existing EAD card.

    AP:

    G1145

I-131 - Complete parts 1,2,3, 7 & 8. No need to add the additional sheet re planned travel. If you don't have a planned travel date (in part 3) write unknown.

    Copy of your I-485 NOA1 (I-797C)

Copy of the front and back of your existing EAD card.

    No fee is required.

Mail it certified delivery. You can apply 120 days before expiry of your current card. Apply as soon as you are able.

Thanks Derwood, you beat me to it :D

  8. Not a story about a misunderstanding (although there have been plenty!) but yesterday there was a town election. I work at a school, which was one of the polling stations, so I got harassed by the various groups on both my way in and out of work. I eventually got so frustrated that I said to one guy "I can't vote, at least not in this country!" and he responded by punching the air and yelling "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN" as I walked away!

I think I may actually have been able to vote in the election so I'm just glad he didn't know enough about it to call me out on it :P

  9. Anyone else still voting in the UK election? I like the fact that I can still vote against UKIP even though I don't live in the UK anymore :dancing:

I've tried three times since moving here to sign up for the postal vote. My application was ignored twice, and the other time I was told that I shouldn't bother as the vote wouldn't get back to the UK in time. So annoyed!

  10. When starting this process, I would have never thought we would have to send in a renewal the EAD/AP card. Our packet arrived to USCIS yesterday.

    Best of Luck!

I know, same here. Good luck to you too!

Good luck on the teaching job search! IDK if Massachusetts uses it, but try edjoin.org. It's a fabulous tool for finding a school job. What grade? I'm 10th.

Thank you! I will look into that site, thanks for the tip! I taught secondary school (11-18) in the UK so could technically do middle or high school, though I'm leaning towards middle school as I prefer the curriculum. Currently working as a TA in a high school though, so you never know!

  11. 120 days before right? I guess I will have to think about that in the next couple of months. :(

Yep :( was hoping I wouldn't have to renew but I don't want to risk waiting and then ending up without a work permit! I'm currently applying for teaching jobs starting in September, my current EAD expires in August so I'm hoping potential employees won't see that and think I won't be able to work! It's hard enough explaining what an EAD is (employers all seem to want to see a Green Card) let alone explaining the renewal process. Ugh.
