Do parents need passports before filing I-130 for them?

They are going to get them soon, but they have never had a passport before. I wasn't sure if we should hold off on filing the I-130 until they have passports in hand.

From what I have read it appears passport is only required if they have traveled to the USA in the past. Then the passport/travel document numbers would need to be provided. But I wasn't able to find anything clarifying for sure in the case that they have never had a passport.

My wife's interview was yesterday at the Atlanta Field Office. Like Nuovomondo, we were in and out quickly.

For her the USCIS account case status didn't update until today, but the date was for yesterday. It had two updates.

First update:

Quote

We approved your application
Your final step to becoming a citizen is to attend your naturalization ceremony
We will mail you a letter when we schedule your naturalization ceremony.

Second update:

Quote

You attended your interview
You do not need to do anything at this time
We will let you know if we need anything else from you as we continue to review your application.

And the Case Status site (where you put in your number and get current status) says Oath will be scheduled

Quote

Oath Ceremony Will Be Scheduled
We placed you in line for your oath ceremony and will send you a notice for Receipt Number IOE0000000, with the date, time, and location of your oath ceremony. You should receive your notice within 30 days of its mailing date. Please follow the instructions in the notice.

My only concern is what the IO told my wife about her last name, so I'm trying to figure out if that is going to be an issue or not. Basically she said her legal name would be different than what all her documents have and will contain two last names (her maiden name as one last name and my last name as the second). I did some searching on VJ already and saw a few things where people had this before but not much follow up on what happened. Hopefully it won't be an issue since her home country knows her by the name we have on all her documents (FIRST NAME + MAIDEN LAST NAME + HUSBAND LAST NAME). The IO told my wife it would be (FIRST NAME + MOTHERS MAIDEN LAST NAME + FATHERS LAST NAME + HUSBAND LAST NAME). Doesn't make any sense why this wouldn't match what is on her Green Card, SSN, Drivers License, etc.

Did the walk-in bio yesterday as I already posted, but got a status update today. I was expecting it to be interview scheduled but it just says we got everything we need from you and are reviewing your case.

And for another data point the online system says 12 months until interview scheduled and 13 months until completion.

Props to you sir! You are a much more patient man than me, especially with the long commute. I have been very patient with my wife. My question to you is that through all that sacrifice and struggle, was your wife appreciative and did she show you gratitude? Mine has zero appreciation and has ATTITUDE instead of gratitude. I get the Tampo, sulking and laying in bed for 3 days at a time treatment.

There have been many times that she didn't show gratitude and even had attitude with me. When I had those feelings I would just try to tell myself that I don't do things for my wife for gratitude, but instead because I love her. We have to have an understanding of how hard it is on them. Sure things here are likely much better than things were back home in PH, but it still takes time to learn and adjust. We diminish these differences because we view life here as better, so why should it be hard to adjust to. But in reality it is still hard to adjust. Leaving your family, friends, and country behind is not easy for anyone. Some people are able to adjust quicker or better than others. Lifestyle maybe easier here but life is overall more complex here.

If the script was flipped and you were placed in a remote village where everyone spoke a different language (I know our wives know English but it's not their native language), did task you were not used to like daily hunting (for survival not sport) for example, the adjustment would be difficult for most. I just use that example to try to point out potential vast differences.

I've mostly solved (or helped) the "tampo" and sulking issue by showing compassion and love when she acts like that. At times we all feel down an upset about something... just or unjust the feelings are real. Sometimes all we need is someone to not try to prove to us we are wrong and just show compassion for our current feelings. We did pre-marriage counseling when she arrived on the K-1 before we got married. One of the assignments was to read the book "Things I Wish I'd Known Before We Got Married" by Gary Chapman. I really feel like this helped us out a lot and one of the things we use from that book is the policy of never going to sleep mad at each other - it's hard some times, but worth it to try.

My suggestions are don't try to change your wife, but change yourself. At the end of the day the only control we have is over ourselves.

Don't do things for others (wife or otherwise) and expect anything in return - you will be disappointed more often than not.

Have love and compassion for everyone. Especially those you think you should be upset with.

Let things go! If someone does something that upsets you, let it go. Forgive them and forget about it. In the grand scheme of things most of the ####### we get upset over doesn't really matter. So forgive your wife for her tampos, lack of gratitude, etc, etc. And hopefully she will forgive you for the things you have done (don't act like you are a saint none of us are we all do dumb things from time to time).

And from what you have posted I would highly recommend some counseling if you want to save the marriage. From your multiple post on this topic it is clear you are unhappy with your wife's actions and it sounds like the marriage is coming to an end when she goes back home.

Regardless of what happens show your wife the love and compassion she deserves as a human. Don't try to make her life more difficult over petty things.

I view marriage as a partnership and all assets are shared. My wife and I have joint accounts that we deposit to and spend from. It was a little rocky at first since both of us were spending and I was only used to just me spending, but we solved that with a budget. Now we use software called YNAB to track income, expenses, and our budget. If one of us needs to spend beyond our personal monthly allowance we have a talk to see where that money will come from (savings, or another budget category). It's not perfect and sometimes we spend too much without that talk, but we are working on getting better at that. It lifted a lot of the burden from me of keeping track of our joint finances and eliminated the need for her to ask me if she could buy something (I didn't like that question).

My wife had a lot of things to learn when she got here. Driving was one of those things and one of the biggest nightmares for me. It was nearly 2 years of me driving her to and from work making my commute 1 hour instead of 10 mins. We spent a lot of money on driving school and I came close to many heart attacks, but I'm happy to report that she passed the test a few months ago and landed a new job that pays pretty well and she loves. I've made it a point to help and teach my wife the things she may not have known from her life in PH. I provided support and encourage she needed in tough times, like when she was trying to get a new job and was not having any luck and when she didn't pass the driver's license exam. So, to me the couple years of discomfort were worth it.

I recommend the book, The Obstacle Is the Way, for anyone that is facing obstacles or trails (so everyone) to get a different perspective on facing life challenges and why they are actually good! Marrying someone from a different culture is not an easy thing and I know my wife and I still have a long road ahead.

After a 3 hour delay in Manila she is finally on a plane to Atlanta! Delta delayed her connecting flight, so she was able to make it. I was worried she was going to be spending the night in Japan.

She is scheduled to land in Atlanta in 10 hours! I'm sure i'll be very productive at work today. I took the rest of the week off! So excited. But, I only slept 2 hours last night so it's going to be a rough day.

I think there is some law on the books, but I think some online systems let you book anyways.

But if you go to Korean Air website and try to book any trip originating from the Philippines it won't let you. It says something like tickets originating from the Philippines need to be purchased in the Philippines per law. It's probably some law supported by the travel agencies their to force people to book with them haha.

I booked a one way ticket on Expedia for Delta. no problem.

Great report. We might be doing the same thing with an 8:35am flight next week, though its looking less and less like that will happen, due to the floods and that our visa seems to have been assigned to Goober for processing.

Good luck. Yes it seems the floods are really messing up everyone plans.

She is still on run way. Delayed for over 1 hour now due to heavy rains there. Hoping it will take off soon so she doesn't miss her connection.

Okay. She went to Manila early to get the sticker the day before flight but CFO was closed due to flooding, so we had to go with the back-up plan. After she landed in Manila she called CFO NAIA and gave them the details of her flight and they said someone would be waiting for her at 5am. So she got the sticker at 5am with no problems.

The delay was with travel tax. The line was very long. It was already 20 minutes to six and she was still in line, so I was thinking she would miss her flight.

But she didn't. I heard from her at around 6:20 that she was at the gate eating a sandwich! She got through Delta checkin, immigration and security very fast. I don't know if it is possible but I think I've read it before, if you can pay travel tax first I would recommend that. That took her 30-40 mins to pay.

So I guess CFO at 5am for a 7:40am flight is okay, but I would recommend doing it in advance. I was a wreck today working about this stuff. Plus she got sick this morning. Always an adventure with this journey.

Well her flight took off from Davao and should be landing in Manila soon with only a 30 minute delay. I called the hotel she is staying at near by the airport and they said they aren't affected by the flood and their airport shuttle is still running.

I'm going to call CFO at 8 and see if they will be opened today. If not she will have to take her chances getting the sticker at the airport tomorrow before her 7:40am flight. That will be cutting it close.

cfo naia desk is at terminal one.. beside TIEZA travel tax desk.. between the entrance doors with the xray / conveyor machines..

if ur fiance arrives in manila early/before cfo manila close at 5pm,maybe she can just get the sticker at the main to be sure..

she can also get the sticker at naia.., but it's too risky..cfo naia desk opens at 5am and her flight is at 7:40am.. the officer there also advise to be there at the airport 3hrs before the flight..if Janen will register at NAIA, it is too risky but, possible if CFO naia desk cooperates too..

Yeah, she told the guy at CFO her flight was at 7am (I though it was going to be but after booking I saw it was 7:40) and he said no problem.

But I was also worried about this and I talked her into going the day before. I got her an early morning flight into Manila (8 am arrival), so she can drop her bags off and head over to CFO by 9 or 10 am I think. And just attempt the NAIA option as a backup. I was just remembering I felt rushed when I took ths flight and got to the airport at 5am. Although I was pretty early to the gate, but I know my way around Terminal 1. I don't think she has ever been to Terminal 1.

Now the travel tax counter is open 24 hours? I think she will get to the airport by 4am (5 at the latest but she is an early riser, so knowing her she will get there as earlier as possible).

It has also been 8 years since I moved here, but from the Philippines. Yeah, it sucks living in the South. I know that no matter where you go, you're not safe anymore, but it would be nice to move. Lol. I don't even know what to tell you, the only Filipinos that I get to see and meet are my mom's friends, and they live all the way in McDonough. For Asian Markets, we go to H-Mart (Jonesboro) and Mega Mart (Duluth).. she'll find the Filipino seasonings and a lot of Filipino stuff over there. Haven't heard of the Filipino Food Truck, once my fiance gets here, we might just try it.

Just let her settle for a little bit though, then you can drag her everywhere you want. Lol! The jet lag will be pretty bad as well.

I'm going to let her rest until Labor Day weekend. We are planning on going to Tybee Island (aka Savannah Beach) with a friend of mine and his girlfriend. Or if that doesn't pan out we are going to go to a beach in North Carolina (where I'm from) to stay at my uncles beach house and visit my family there. Got to get her a beach trip in before it starts getting cold here. I know the jet lag usually takes me about a week to get over.

Lol. I would love to move up North tho

Seems to be the thing to do. I've only been here for 8 years and I've always lived on the north side, since it's close to my job. But, it seems like a lot of people that live around here used to live on the south side at one point.

Any tips for my fiancee as a Filipino in the Atlanta area? I don't personally know any Filipinos here. I'm not sure you are a Filipino, but just guessing from your photo.

I've found a Filipino group called Atlanta Pinoy, I've mapped out all the Asian markets in the area for us to try and find Filipino foods she might like, found a place called Kuyo Express, and there is a Filipino Food Truck now in Atlanta. I haven't tried it yet.
