Finally, after 14 months (PD was aug 22nd 2017) my husband is going to become a citizen on the 30th of October . The ceremony will be in Long Island. Today my citizenship journey is over. My oath ceremony was at Cadman Plaza, just three weeks after the interview.

I received a call from a private number the day before. I didn't pick up because of all the spam that I've received lately, but USCIS left a message reminding me of the ceremony and asked me to bring two passport photographs.

First suggestion: If you changed your name, make sure you bring two passport photos. I had given them already to the officer during the interview, but I guess they misplaced them. I was the only one who got there with photos. Everyone else had to go out to take them.
Second suggestion: If you haven't taken your passport pictures by then, I recommend the Fedex location at Court St between Montague and Remsen. Duane Reade next door wanted to take a picture with my cell phone (which I didn't even bring with me) and print it from there. Fedex has a decent camera; 2 pictures were about 16USD while 4 were 22USD. I got four, as I will need one for the passport.

The entrance to the Court is on Cadman Plaza East, facing the park. Because I waited for a while at Duane Reade, I got into the building about 8.45am (fashionably late, as the scheduled time was 8:30am). I am not suggesting to arrive late, but it seemed to pay off. Third suggestion: Make sure you take EVERYTHING out from your pocket. I keep beeping at the metal detector because I had two small alcohol wipes the doctor gave me a couple months ago. So, everything can trigger that thing!  Fourth suggestion: Do leave your phone home. It will save you time on your way out.

After going to the second floor, I entered the room, which was almost full. It was around 8.55am and only about 12 people came after me. Right away, they asked people who changed their name for their photos. From the ones I heard, I was the only one who already had them; I signed them on the side and went back to my seat. After that, they went row by row in order of arrival. Each of us had to present our letter, give away our green card, and picked a folder with information, including a passport aplication, and the oath/pledge. Then we moved to a second desk where we reviewed the naturalization certificate to make sure the information was OK, and we signed them. This process took over an hour. Fifth suggestion: Do bring a book. There is a lot of waiting, so unless you are very curious to see all the people walking around and making lines here and there, it would be good to read something. You could also bring some shades and crash, I heard some snoring 😅

When the entire room went through, then we were given aplications to register to vote. They are very nice, help people fill them out and pick them up. Sixth suggestion: Bring a pen, maybe even two, because people will ask you for one. We were given additional instructions. You can go to the restroom during this process, just make sure to be there when your line is called. By now, it was almost 11:30am. At some point, they gave away the name-change certificates to those of us who changed it.

At that point, the judge came out. The oath/pledge took perhaps two minutes and that was it! We were all American. She went on to say she was a child of Chinese immigrants and knew the hardship many had to overcome to get to this moment. She was funny and emotional. She also explained the history of the mural at the back of court. She then went on to say there were people from 61 (or 67?) different countries and started calling them one by one. We raised our hands when she called our country and she acknowledged every one. By far, the Chinese dominated this session! The judge was there for maybe 15 minutes. When the judge was gone, the USCIS personnel called us line by line in order of arrival again, and out we went. Seventh suggestion: I am not saying to arrive late, but from my experience, it seems that people who arrived early had to wait much longer than me. As I said, delivering the certificates was very very quick. I would recommend arriving closer to 8:30am and do not bring a cell phone.

On the way out there was a huge line to pick up the phones, although it seemed to be moving fast. Eight suggestion: If you don't have a phone, do not wait on any line to go out (it forms up to the stairs). Just go through, say excuse me, and exit. Ninth suggestion: In my opinion, if you have friends or family supporting you, they should either wait outside or at a location nearby. They cannot enter the room and honestly I don't believe it is worth it to make the line and wait. Have them keep your phone and meet elsewhere around noon.

And.... more suggestions!!!

1. Go to Social Security right away! It is two blocks away in Pierrepoint St. You can download the form, fill it out before hand and save time. It took me like 20 minutes to process, considering waiting time. They just ask for the application, naturalization certificate, previous social security card and if you changed your name, the name-change certificate as well. They kept my card and gave a letter saying I would receive a new one over the mail. They did not keep any original documents. Disclaimer: The USCIS paperwork says to wait for about 15 days before heading to SS. I took a chance because I wanted to speed up the process, and it worked.

2. After SS, speed up to the DMV! The closest to me is at the Atlantic Terminal, across the street from Barclay's Center and Target. If you changed your name, you might need to go to the DMV and request a new State ID or license. Same as above, download the form and fill it out before hand. They did not even ask for the naturalization certificate, just for the document supporting the name change and my previous REAL ID, which I got to keep. They do not keep any documentation.  Disclaimer: (1) It did take me about 3 hours to complete. I suggest to get an appointment. (2) At SS they told me I had to wait for the new SS card to go to the DMV. But because I already had the new REAL ID, had no problems. They did not ask for the SS card. The new ID cost 5 USD and will arive on the mail as well. (3) This was my process having a REAL ID already and a name change. It might be different if you have an older NY ID/license or if you have a different situation.

3. There is time, go get your passport! This did not work in my case, because of my long wait. I scheduled the latest appointment at the Post Office at 539 Atlantic Ave but missed it. I will try tomorrow. I read somwhere (maybe even here) that people have bought those heavy duty sheet protectors, as they do keep your documents. That is how I will take them tomorrow. Will let you know if they come back safe and sound. Same as above, download the form, have your photos ready, and you will save a lot of time.

Congrats!!

From looking at all the timelines on the chart, it does look like 5 weeks from letter to interview is average, but it can vary from 2 to 7 weeks. Hopefully you your interview happens sooner than later!

today I received a message and an email that the interview was scheduled. Hoping to get the actually letter in the mail before the weekend.

Question: it usually takes about 5 weeks from status change to actual interview? Like, since I received the text today, Aug 6, it will be sometime between Sept 6- Sept 16, correct? Or it might be longer?

Update my color! Finally my journey was over.

a few notes for the oath ceremony at 225 cadman plaza east.

my appointment is at 8:30am, i got there at 8, already a long line. However, they processed one by one, so even if you come early, you still have to wait. bring a pen bring 2 copy of passport photos just in case, there were few people for some whatever reason they asked for it, and they have to go out to take a photo rumor said, because uscis couldnt locate applicant picture, so they will ask for it, to put on the certificate (they used the photo they took on biometric day for me) they said you have to update your social security profile, but wait 3 weeks before the 2 systems can be updated. but i went to update my profile anyway, social security worker didnt say anything the process was: went through sec line, turned in your phone, sit on court room, people with special requests got called the name first (missing photo, missing paperwork, some got sent home/uscis office etc), and then "normal" got up row by row to review our letter and confirmed info on our naturalization certificate, while we were waiting for IO update info for the error/people changing their name, they asked us to fill a form to register to vote, the judge came in to witness us taking the oath of allegiance, then he gave a speech, and then we got up row by row again to receive our certificate and left the room, over! it was total of 254 or 251 people that day court room is not big enough so none of families and friends got to witness anything i got out at 11:45 (was half of the room behind me), overall was a long long waiting period It took me 1 year 1 month and 7 days to complete the N400 by paper filling (no REF or whatsoever)

Ok, so, strangest thing, I had my interview yesterday, and immidiately got an updated for my oath ceremony. First of all, at my interview yesterday (7/24), I had to add two updates. One was that I got married in December, and the second was that I JUST got back from a trip outside of the country. (7/13 - 7/23, I literally got back the day before my interview). The interview was pretty relaxed. In the beginning he did ask why I had waited so long to file for citizenship, as I have been a permanent resident since I entered the country at the age of 3 years old in 1985. I was honest and told him that after 18, I was just busy partying, then attending college, and just never got around to it. The questions asked were: 1: What does the presidential cabinet do? 2: We elect a senator for how many years? 3: Name a branch or part of the government. 4: What did the Declaration of Independence do? 5. If the President and Vice President are unavailable to lead, who then becomes president? 6: How many Supreme Court justices are there? The reading question was: “The White House is located in Washington D.C.” (I think, I don’t remember too well) Writing: “We celebrate Columbus Day in October.” After that, we reviewed my application and he added in my recent trip and marriage. He then congratulated me and gave me a paper letting me know I passed my interview and was recommending my application for approval. Here’s where I am surprised: about 20 minutes after I left, I received a text message that my case was updated, I didn’t check it as I thought it was simply stating that I attended my interview. This morning (on 7/25 at 6am) I received another text stating my case was updated so I decided to log in and check. There are 3 updates all with the date of my interview (7/24). The updates are: 1. You attended your interview 2. We have approved your application 3. Your Oath Ceremony has been scheduled. My Oath Ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 8th at 8:30 am. I was so surprised to see it done so fast. I was expecting to wait another 2-5 months. Updating my case below to add Oath Date, will change the color on it after it is done. Also just to share with everybody something I discovered when my N400 interview was scheduled if you want to know the date of your interview simply go to the infopass page and under manage account select VIEW YOUR APPOINTMENT and then fill out the section reprint appointment with your NAME & D.O.B then your interview will pop up the office and the date. A new trick I guess might be useful as ive realized they not only keep info pass appointment but also those with benefit interview etc

Had my N-400 interview which went very well the IO was really good however at the end I was handed n-652 saying I have passed but decision cant be made I asked why and IO inform me no worries you just have a lot of travel and he's got to review it apart from that im good also he has 120 days to make a decision but it should take less than a month so just wait for oath ceremony in the mail when he's made his decision.

Now we have to wait for the official letter and the day.
can anybody tell me what to bring at the interview?

So,

I had to apply to renew my Green Card because it was expiring and its been 6 months since I applied for Citizenship with no update. I did my biometrics for Citizenship in December, my case status says they are still reviewing biometrics.

Biometrics for Green Card was scheduled for 5/21, however, I walked in yesterday 5/9 to their LIC location. I went at about 1pm and luckily there were only a handful of people there, so they took my walk in.

Just wanted to let everyone know they DO take walk-in's there, but its wise to go in the afternoon (so that they'll be more inclined to process you), and not with the early morning rush.

Also so happy that they now put a sticker on your card which extends it for a year. Much better than having to get an INFO Pass appointment for that I-551 stamp like they used to make us do in the past.

Hi ,
I had my interview today , time was 10:40 , I arrived at 10 and was in room 700 by 10:10 , my number didn’t get called until 1:10 , I went in and was interviewed by a nice professional who was all business , after swearing to tell the truth she asked for my green card , state id and passport , went over my application and added notes , took the reading and writing test , read “who is on the dollar bill” wrote George Washington is on the dollar bill , 6 questions , 1 longest river 2 when was the Declaration of Independence signed 3 what is the financial system in the US 4 who is the speaker of the house 5 what are the first 10 amendments to the constitution called and 6 who can vote .
She didn’t ask for any additional documents and I brought a lot , totoal interview was about 15 mins , she said I was approved and handed me a letter saying that , then she said the oath letter should be in 1-3 months , I asked if there is any way I could wait for it or get a more accurate time frame and she said no .
Now the next waiting period begins ..

My wife had her oath ceremony on Friday, January 19th.

This is for 500 Pearl Street in Manhattan.

It is a complete different experience than what @Going through experienced back in October in Brooklyn.

My wife's oath letter stated 10am so we left home about 8am but due to subway delays we got there about 9:30, it usually takes me 30 minutes from home to work which is one subway stop less. So it is a good idea to give yourself cushion time if traveling by the subway.

The courthouse address is 500 Pearl Street. However, the main Pearl Street entrance is reserved for employees only. The visitor's entrance is around the corner @ the north side of the building on Worth Street. Columbus Park/Playground (Chinatown) is across the street. Fyi, Columbus Park is located in what was part of the Five Points district and was portrayed in the movie "Gangs of New York" directed by Martin Scorsese.

There is an airport style security screening - you empty your pocket and put all belonging as well as your coat in a bin. There was a long line to enter, three of the 4 long rows were filled with people. There are 4 scanners so the line was moving. The gentleman directing people was giving instructions to everyone to turn off their cell and check it in as electronic devices are not allowed inside. We had to hand in both our cell phones and smart watches.

The area to turn in your devices is located right after you pass the scanners but before you enter the main area. You hand in your devices and you are given a round metal chip with a number written on it.

The main jury room is right there as you enter, just a couple of feet from the devices check-in area and it is huge.
There was a long line of people. There was a sign at the entrance instructing people on how to fill the back of the oath ceremony notice. There was also an immigration officer who was walking the line checking everyone's letter. Some people dated the letter with a day or two prior but he changed the date to the current date. So make sure you date your oath letter with the date of your oath ceremony.

The oath check-in area was divided in three. There was a main line where you first go to turn in your green card and there were two people at that desk. They asked you "have anything change since your interview". You were handed a big white envelope which contains a hard folder to hold your certificate, a two-side card with the "pledges", info on voting & serving on a jury and a passport application.

You were then directed to either a line on the left of the room or one on the right. That is where you check your certificate to ensure that it is correct and sign it. There were 2 officers stationed at each desk (so 6 officers total). My wife was sent to the line on the right as well as most of the other oath takers. Not sure what the line on the left was for.

I stayed on both line with her the entire time, the immigration office even made a joke saying "oh you here with her for moral support". The officers would tell everyone "you are here because you requested a name change", the show the person he name change certificate & tell them "this is your previous name & this is the name you are changing it to, is this correct?", then he would instruct them to verify the certificate is correct.

There were a few errors with some of the oath takers certificate but they were mainly with signatures. Some people actually had their name printed on their picture instead of a signature. You are suppose to print your name on the back of the picture & sign the front, but it looks like interviewers had some applicants do the reverse, including my wife (the interviewer did as my wife for pics at the interview). The officers at the oath ceremony had them resign the certificate on the stamped part.

It was a long process, they started check-in in people way before 10am but didn't finish until a few minutes before 12 -the ceremony was suppose to start at 11:30am. There was a 5-10 minute wait as the officers cleared out their area and packed up.

Then we were all told to rise and the judge entered. If I recall correctly, it was judge Katherine Forrest and she gave a beautiful and aspiring speech. I have watched a few speeches on youtube and hers was wonderful.

The guest were told to sit while the applicants were instructed to remain standing and they took the "Oath of Allegiance". Then we all stand, face the flag and say the "Pledge of Allegiance".

The judge repeatedly said that it was a long day and she didn't want to keep us any longer.

There was no guest speaker nor was there a video/speech by the president.

There was no acknowledge of the countries represented nor was there an announcement of the number of new citizens.
There were about a dozen no-show, an immigration officer was calling out names for them to come forward and only 1 person came forward.

The new citizens names were not called by alphabetical order or the likes. I think that was due to time restraint (not having enough time to organize them).

They did call about a dozen people first as they stated that these people had appointments back at Federal Plaza. We were seated in the 6th row from the front so we heard part of the conversation; they instructed some to go to Duane Reade and take passport pictures & other to bring the documents they had with them and what room to go to at Federal Plaza. These people did take the oath and were handed the certificate so not sure what the reasons were.

The immigration officers were very professional, there was one officer who would come over and help translate.
The place was filled with some people standing in the back. I tried counting how many seats in the room by counting the rows but got lost at 272 seats, so it was a very large group taking the oath.

Also to note, that some guest(s) did sit together with their spouse/family member. I did sit in the front with my wife, there was no instruction on where to sit or not to sit. The only instruction was not to sit in the first front row on either side.

I wanted to stay and ask the immigrant officers how many new citizens & number of countries represented but we were pressed for time. My wife was one of the early people who was called to pick up her certificate AND we had to go pick up our son from school which dismiss at 2:20pm. We didn't make prior arrangements as we didn't think that it would take that long, someone we know took their oath the week prior and was done by & out of the building by 12pm.

We were out of the building with certificate in hand by about 12:50pm, we were there for a little over 3 hours. There were some people there longer - they were already there when we arrive & still there when we left.

While leaving there were some people taking picture in-front the main entrance with their certificate, I even took a few pics for someone who wanted family pics.

Hi everyone,

I had my interview yesterday (01/17/18) at NYC Field Office. My interview was scheduled at 7.15am. I arrived at the USCIS 26 Federal Building at 7.07am. The building was still closed and so was the security check point. At 7.10am I and the other people who lined up for the security check were let in. I then headed to the 7th Floor for a check in. I was told to wait near Door 2 for my name to be called. Within 5 mins or so a gentleman greeted me at the door and escorted me to an office. He was a white man around the age of 50s. He had a very pleasant personality and funny.

The interview started with English tests: reading and writing tests.
I was asked to read, "When is Columbus Day?"
I was asked to write, "Columbus Day is in October."

After that my interviewer proceeded to the civics test. The questions I was asked were the followings:
(1) What did the declaration of independence do?
(2) How many supreme court judges are there?
(3) Name one branch of the government
(4) Who becomes president if the President and the Vice President cannot serve?
(5) We elect a senator for how many years?
(6) What does the cabinet do?

I answered all six questions correctly os we then proceeded to the "Yes/No" questions. Once done, he asked me about my personal history (e.g. when I arrived in the US, when I got married to my spouse, when my spouse become a citizen (but my spouse was born a citizen), why I was in the Africa for 100 days in the summer (I was working for an international organization so the interviewer was okay with it), when I filed the N-400 form, etc.). The whole process seemed very long, like over 30 min, as the computerized system that the Office has just started using has a glitch and kept saying that I was not eligible and I might have filed the application too early. The interviewer did not believe the system so he asked me the above-mentioned questions to confirm my eligibility. Then he asked me for documents to prove my on-going relationship with my spouse as he did not have any print-outs of the supporting documents I submitted online. Luckily I took the same set of the documents I submitted online to my interview. Therefore, I let him choose what he needed. He said, "wow, you have too much. I don't need all these." Then we joked about how painful it was to having to collect all the documents. All in all, it was a friendly interview. He was pleased with the supporting documents I submitted. I had two passport photos with me. Although he did not ask for any photo, I voluntarily offered them to him. He took them. He said, "You have passed the tests, and I will recommend you for approval". He then check the two boxed on my interview assessment paper. He told me my oath ceremony should be around the end of February at one of the three locations (I cannot remember where they are) the Office usually holds ceremonies. I asked him if I could get my oath letter today but he politely said no. He said his colleagues need to schedule me first before my letter can be issued. He walked me to the elevator. He shook hands and said good bye.And that was it.

When I reached the subway, I received multiple email notifications from USCIS including.
01/17/2017: We recommended that your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization , be approved. Your case was submitted for quality review.
01/17/2017: Your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization , was placed in line for oath ceremony scheduling.

And today I received:
01/18/2017: Oath Ceremony Notice Was Mailed

I am waiting for my oath ceremony notice to be uploaded on my online account. Hopefully, I can share with you tomorrow when my oath ceremony will be. Fingers crossed. I do hope my interview experience can help some of our fellows here more or less.
