Her current card is only for 2 years, and it says "Permanent Resident" on the top
-
Hello,
My wife has a Permanent Resident/Green Card that is due to expires in February 2017. I know I could've looked this information up online, but I feel that you guys are more up-to-date with information. Can you please tell me what is the process for renewal? She is Japanese and is not interested in becoming a US Citizen now (don't think she qualifies either). She'd rather keep her green card status. We live in New York City. Is this easier to do via mail or in-person. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry Boiler that my ignorance is apalling. This whole marriage/visa thing gets to be alot at times.
She does not have the 10 year, she has the 2 year conditional.
So in summary, it is recommended that she fly with the green card for the Vegas trip.
Internationally (since we'll be flying to Central and South America in mid-Jan.), she'll need her Japanese passport, her marriage certificate showing name change, and her green card.
Correct?

My wife is a US Resident from Japan. She has a green card that won't expire (be up for renewal) until 2017. We are planning a trip to Las Vegas around the end of September. We would be flying from New York. The only passport she has is her Japanese passport with her pre-marriage surname. Should she fly with that passport or since she now has a green card, should she apply for a US passport with her name married name? We were not thinking about getting her a US passport any time soon. What would you suggest we do? Thank You.

Hello,
My wife is not even pregnant yet, but I would like to plan ahead. I am a born US Citizen, my wife is currently a US Green Card holder. She is still a Japanese citizen though.
Since she is the one that will have to go through the pregnancy, I am willing to have our child born in Japan if she'd like. It'll be easier on her.
Will it be easy to afterwards get my child US Citizenship even if we don't travel back to the US any time soon?
I don't think Japan and the USA offer dual citizenship.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Okay guys, I appreciate the responses. I'll buy it in her maiden name that is found on her passport.

Hello,
I'm trying to figure out how to fly my wife back to the USA. She traveled to Japan under her maiden name, because that is the name that is in her passport. She left on November 9, 2014 and will probably be returning in late-March 2015. She was able to be gone for so long, because she has one of those work/travel cards that doesn't expire until September 2015. Since she has been gone, she received an approved I-485 saying that she has been granted permanent residence for a 2-year time period. The card will be arriving in 3 weeks. She didn't have to go through an interview.
My only concern is that when she returns to the USA, I don't want her to have any trouble getting into the country.
Should she return under her maiden name since that's what her passport says, or should she return under her married name, so that she doesn't get into any potential trouble with the custom agents? How should she go about coming back in?
Btw, she was gone for so long because one of her grandmothers passed away and then the other grandmother passed away.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I appreciate the replies. I ended up being on the phone with the insurance people for 2 hours and now my wife will be covered under my insurance as well. Based on my financial information, I don't know if we'll have any co-pay this time around. Last year, they had let me know what I'd have to pay, this time around it was not even mentioned.

Just to further specify, we both live in New York City. I am a US Citizen and she is a Japanese citizen

My health insurance is up for renewal today and I'm trying to figure out if I should ask them to include my wife on my plan. My current health insurance is kind of bad (the doctors are not really that great and I have to pay about $35 for every single visit even if the doctors don't do anything). My wife, since she has no green card or employment, is seeing regular doctors at a regular hospital and I feel she currently gets much better treatment then I do. What I'd have to pay $300 for, she gets away with paying $25 max. What would you suggest I do? Anyone have/had a similar situation?
The only upside would be that if I improved my health insurance (only slightly better service with a higher co-pay) and sought to include her then she'd probably receive better treatment (but have to wait longer for an appointment as well). She doesn't need constant treatment for anything, but I figure she'd be going into the gynecologist, dentist, primary physician, etc. at least twice a year.
If I didn't put her on now, I'd have to wait until November 2015 to put her on.

Sorry for any confusion. I meant to say she does not have a US Passport, but she does have a Japanese passport with her maiden name.
One poster says that I should buy the flight ticket with her maiden name, but I'm thinking to buy out with the name on the Advance Parole Card makes more sense, right? I'm confused and just don't want her to be accused of lying.

My wife is a Japanese citizen who has an ID Card that serves as Employment Authorization and I-512 Advanced Parole. She needs to fly to Japan soon. I have already found out that all she needs to travel is this ID (that expires in September 2015), right? She does not have a US Passport, so when entering the airport, does she need to show a passport at all, or will the card and plane ticket be enough? I should buy the ticket with her new name (she has my last name now), instead of buying the ticket with her maiden name and just having her fly using her Japanese passport, right? Won't it look weird if she flies out with a ticket showing her maiden name and flies back into the USA with a ticket showing her married name? Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks.
P.S.- I am a US Citizen and my wife and I got married in April of 2014 after she came in on a K1 Visa

Thanks for the information ladies and gentlemen

My wife does not have a Green Card or even Residency, but she has a Social Security Card. Can she get a New York State ID?
-
My wife never applied for a Social Security number before her I-94 number expired, and at the time you guys advised me that she could wait until later. I don't remember if you guys said she can wait until after she gets her Employment Card, or if she has to get a job first, and then apply for a Social Security number. She currently has the Employment Card. Is it as simple as walking into a Social Security office and just asking for a SS #?
Also, now that she has the employment card, could I take her to places like Target, have her show the card, and hope she gets hired? Or will she need that Social Security number? What else besides The Employment Authorization card does she need to show to employers in order to get hired?
I am a US Citizen and she is a Japanese citizen currently living in New York City with me.

She only needs her Japanese passport and the card then. That's good.
I doubt that she has an interview coming soon as they just sent us a letter last week saying that she may have the interview waived. And she may be asked to interview at a later date. Worse case scenario, if they tell her that her interview is 2 weeks away, and she still hasn't returned, then I would just fly her back.

My wife is Japanese and I am a US Citizen. She is in the Adjustment of Status Process and just received her travel and employment card 3 days ago. My wife received a United States of America Employment Authorization Card that also serves as I-512 Advance Parole. So, the good thing is that now she can travel.
Her grandmother is sick in Japan. The question I have though is that a lady at my local USCIS office mentioned that my wife should try to not be out of the country for more than 30 days. If she decides to stay for longer than 30 days because her grandmother remains sick, how serious is it? Will USCIS really be hard on her given the circumstances?
Also, she'll be able to use this card to travel and this card alone, right? She has her Japan passport and this card. She has no social security number yet or any other form of US ID. Does she have to fill out any additional forms before she travels in order to be able to use this card?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Actually, we did submit all 3 forms. And, surprisingly yesterday morning, she received a United States of America Employment Authorization Card that also serves as I-512 Advance Parole. So, the good thing is that now she can travel.

Thanks for the info. Also I will check out that Emergency Travel page soon

Hello,
I am not fully aware of what your advice is. You mention the CR-1, but we didn't use that process since we did the whole K-1 Visa process. You say that she can travel without having the Advanced Parole (I-131 thing), but that she can't return without it. So...worse case scenario, she can still travel and I would just need to mail her the I-131 when it arrives, right? Please let me know if what I'm saying makes sense. Thanks.

Hello,
We received a letter from the USCIS dated September 25, 2014. It said that we may qualify for an Interview Waiver (so that we wouldn't need to do an interview in order to complete or I-485 process). It also said that due to delay, the process may not be complete for another 6 months (that sucks). I am an American Citizen, she is a Japanese citizen. We've done everything right thus far.
My main question is: How much are the work permission and travel permission connected to the I-485? Would my wife be able to work if she hasn't completed the I-485 process yet? More importantly, would she be able to travel (would the I-131 permission be granted), before the I-485 process is done? I ask, because my wife's grandmother is kind of sick, and she would love to go visit her. Would we have to start everything all over again if my wife were to travel back to Japan before receiving the travel card? Or there any special circumstances for when one wants to visit ailing relatives?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

they sent 2 letters with the same date both asking for the same thing. One is titled "Request for Initial/Additional Evidence (I-765)" and the other is titled "Request for Initial/Additional Evidence" The latter one mentions form I-131 in the first sentence. The I-765 one mentions form I-765 in the first sentence. All the other paragraphs in the letter are exactly the same word for word and seek the same kind of evidence. At the end it says to "include this letter with your response". Should I send both letters? Or did they send me a copy so that I'd have it for my records?
I might just play it safe and send them what they want twice.
-
She probably won't be traveling till January, but this is good to know. I will pull out the copies of what we sent to see exactly what it is that we put on those forms. She does not have a social security number as we missed that deadline. It's not a big issue though. I'm just wondering if I should get a new marriage certificate copy from the City Clerk's office,or if I can just send another photocopy of our original.

I forgot that they also asked for a sworn affidavit indicating her full name. Should she just handwrite on any blank sheet of paper "My name is ________ and I am applying for _________? Is that all they want?

Whoa, I thought that was a typo. How and Why is it so expensive?
I'll probably end up paying it anyway, but as a hypothetical, what happens if I don't file and just let her current card expire? What position would she be in? What would she be considered?
