@DannyAdelante, if I remember correctly, on the the Day of your naturalization ceremony, an officer will ask you to write your name on either a form or your naturalization certificate as you would like it to be forever.

I remember that because I almost Americanized my first name at that point, but ended up keeping my first name and middle initial.

That's helpful, thanks! I will see if I can do that.

  2. I have a question about the name change.  Not sure if it's been answered earlier in this thread - I read through most of it but did not see it.

I have two middle names on my birth certificate. I have never used these names in any capacity, ever.  I'm from Ireland, and my Irish passport, my Irish social security card, my college transcripts, drivers license all have just my first name and last name.

When I moved to the US on a J-1 visa in 2009, it was issued in First Name, Last Name. Same with my H1-B and my Green Card.  My American social security card is the same, as well as my US drivers license, bank records, tax records, literally every legal document you can think of.

At my N-400 interview, my interviewer saw that there was two middle names on my birth certificate, and asked about it. I explained all of the above. She then insisted that I change the name on my application to include the two middle names.  I said I did not want to do that, as every other legal document I have does not have them, and my legal name in Ireland is my First Name, Last Name, without the middle names, and has been in America for the past decade too. She basically said that she would not continue with my N400 interview unless I consented to the change, so I did - what choice did I have?!

I have my oath ceremony next week.  Is there any chance I could get it changed there?  If not, would it be wise to go and get it changed "back" to just my First Name, Last Name at court on the same day, before I apply for my US passport?  If so, how long would that process take?

We filed a I-751 in June of 0219 and a N0400 in July of 2020.  An interview was scheduled for N-400 on April 8 which we postponed.   On April 9 we received notice that the USCIS had approved the I-751 without an interview.  The notice however stated, "Our records also indicate that we have approved your Form N-400."  "Because we also approved your N-400, you will not receive a new"  green card.  However, a week later a notice of interview for N-400 arrived for May 18.  We called in to see what the deal was and are waiting for a tier 3 callback.  Anyone ever heard of a situation like this?

    IMG_2483.jpg

Hi seablock, my letter said the exact same thing. However, the letter was issued one day after I had had my N400 interview.  I assume they would not approve your N400 without an interview.

Maybe it's just a standard (if confusing) template that they send to everyone who has their I-751 approved and also has an N400 somewhere in the system?

Just for reference, it was nearly five months between receiving that letter, and actually receiving my oath ceremony letter. I hope you will have some info sooner than that.

Just wanted to give an update on my two applications.

I submitted my I-751 in October 2018, and my N-400 in September 2019.  Had no activity on my I-751 after my biometrics appointment in November 2018 - almost two years.  Got an interview scheduled for my N-400 in April 2020, and was immediately de-scheduled because of the pandemic.

Fast forward a few months, and I got my N-400 interview re-scheduled for November 3rd in New York City - Election Day.

Everything I had read, and even after speaking to my lawyers, indicated that it would be a combo interview.  But when I was called for my interview, the interviewer said she only did N-400 interviews, and the I-751 was nothing to do with her, she had never heard of anyone doing combo interviews, and that it would be a different office processing that. She could not even tell me if I would need to come in for another interview or not.

Interview went fine, and at the end she was like "I can't give you a decision because of your pending I-751".  I asked if they could call that office, as it was in the same building, and it was my understanding that combo interviews were fairly common when the I-751 had not been processed.  She said she had never heard of that, and she could only give me a "no decision made yet" piece of paper, and said I could go home.

I was really dejected.  I had hoped to become a citizen that day, or at least get a date for my oath ceremony (everyone who got approved on November 3rd was given a December 18th date for their Oath Ceremony), but still felt that I was in limbo.

She then must have escalated my I-751 case because it was approved that same afternoon, and I received my approval letter the following day, on the 4th.

    The I-751 approval letter stated:

We have approved your I-751 Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence. Our records also indicate that we have approved your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. Because we also approved your N-400, you will not receive a new Permanent Resident Card (also known as a Green Card). Instead, once you have taken the Oath of Allegiance, you will receive a Certificate of Naturalization, which will be proof of your U.S. citizenship. If you have questions regarding this process, please contact the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283.

So, that was great. But since then I have heard nothing.

The estimated case completion time stated January 2021 - 2/3 months after the interview, but last week, that estimated case completion time was pushed back a further two months to March 2021.

When I check my USCIS status both online and via their automated phone system, it says that my "Interview Has Been Scheduled".  There is nothing about it being completed (which it was) or approved (which the letter says is the case).

I called USCIS and spoke to an agent. They said that did seem strange, and that they could not see anything on their end, but that they could not investigate my case until at least 60 days had passed from my interview (which took place 55 days ago).

So, overall, I guess I should be happy that my citizenship seems to have been approved? But it looks like it is stuck in their system because of an error, and keeps getting needlessly delayed. And I do not have either a new Green Card with conditions removed or my certificate of naturalization.

I finally got the letter approving my Naturalization today, and scheduling my Oath Ceremony.  It is scheduled for May 28, 2021.

    Here is my timeline:
October 2018 - Applied for Removal of Conditions (I-751) in October 2018

September 2019 - Applied for Naturalization (N-400) in September 2019

March 9, 2020 - Naturalization interview scheduled for April 20, 2020, then canceled because of the pandemic

September 2020 - Naturalization interview scheduled for November 3, 2020

November 3, 2020 - Had Naturalization interview. Interview went well, but was told a decision could not be made on Naturalization because of my pending I-751 application

November 4, 2020 - I-751, Removal of Conditions, Approved. Received letter saying that I would not receive a new Green Card because I would be scheduled for my Oath Ceremony soon

    ...................

Five and a half months of no information followed, after several calls to USCIS with no information, three separate inquiries to my field office that all came back "your application is still being reviewed" (which means they didn't even look at it). The entire time, my USCIS profile status was March 9, 2020 - We scheduled an interview for your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, which was obviously wrong, as they had not updated my profile page in over a year since then, despite multiple things happening.

    ...................

April 22, 2021 - We recommended that your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, be approved. Your case was submitted for quality review.
April 22, 2021 - Your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, was placed in line for oath ceremony scheduling.

April 22, 2021 - Oath Ceremony Notice Was Mailed

So, all in all, it will have been 20 months (September 2019 - May 2021) from N-400 application to approval.  Extremely relieved, but also frustrated at the long periods without any explanation for delays, while seeing people in the same field office get approved on much shorter timelines.

Just got out. They only interviewed me and approved i-751 and N-400. They didn't want to speak to my wife. The security guards did give me hassle about bringing my wife in but I took the above notice out with the "bring your spouse" highlighted and they let her in. Would recommend anyone in the same situation do the same just incase.

Relieved to be at the end of the road, good luck to everyone.

You got a combo?! The exact same office told me they had "never heard of that being done before" in November when I had my N-400.  Four months later, and I'm still in limbo.

    An update on my case:
Yesterday was 120 days since my Naturalization interview, so according to earlier calls, today was the day they would be able to investigate my case.  All they were able to do was say that they would contact the New York Field Office, and I should expect a phone call or email from them, but it could take around 30 days to get a response.
So I guess I'm waiting until April 4th to call back.  I hope someone there actually looks at my case and realizes "oh, we've already approved this one", but I don't have high hopes.

I need your advice. I filed I-751 in late 2018 and N-400 in late 2019. Once I filed N-400, my I-751 moved to the local office.

Last month, I attended my N-400 interview. I was assuming it would be a combo interview, but it wasn’t. The officer said they only had me there for N-400, and although they had my I-751 in front of them, they couldn’t look at it because they were busy.

The officer informed me that I passed my N-400, but I can’t be called for an oath yet because my I-751 would need to be adjudicated first. They told me they would look into having someone review it, but it’s been a month and my case status hasn’t changed.

I submitted a request online but got an automated letter just a few days after saying my I-751 is still within normal processing times. Anything I could do? Or should I just continue to wait? At this point, it’s been 2.5 years since I filed my I-751, and it’s the only thing left on my journey to citizenship. Thanks!

Can't really offer advice, but I am in similar situation.  But with mine, my interviewer, or someone, clearly escalated my I-751 case, as it was approved the day after my interview.  But that was over four months ago, and I have still heard nothing about my naturalization, and I am convinced my application is caught up in some sort of glitch in their system.

Is 2.5 years really in their normal processing times? I filed in October 2018, and I think they said 19.5 months was my normal processing time. Once that time passed, they said that it had been consolidated into my N-400 application, but when I turned up for my interview, the interviewer said she didn't know anything about that.

Hey, I hope everything goes well with ur case, my situation is the same, did you receive oath letter yet?

    Hey,

No, no Oath letter yet.  It has now been 99 days since my interview (on November 3, 2020), and 98 since I got the letter approving my I-751, with the note about my N-400 also being approved.

I called them back after 60 days, and they said that they still had no new information for me, and that they did not have access to the letter that I have that indicated that my N-400 was approved.  They said that they were not obligated to give me any new information until 120 days have expired (March 4, 2021), so I think I am going to have to wait until then.  If I do not hear anything by March 4th, I think they can start an investigation into my case.

It's all very frustrating, as I'm sure it is just a case of red tape, and a box needing to be ticked.  My current estimated time of completion is March 2021 according to the USCIS website.

Hope you find out soon.  Let me know if you do!

  10. Finally got my rescheduled interview date!

USCIS received my N-400 application on 09/12/2019.  I had an interview scheduled, also for Queens, NY on 04/20/2020, but was descheduled on April 1 because of COVID-19.  Just received a letter dated September 29th, 2020 that my interview will be scheduled in the New York City (Manhattan) field office on November 3rd - election day!

I also have an I-751 (Removal of Conditions on Green Card) application pending, and they have both been merged into one application at this point.  I'm wondering if I need to do both interviews, either combined, or one after the other, if same day oaths are still done in that circumstance?

Did you have an original interview date before COVID-19?  USCIS received my N-400 application on 09/12/2019.  I had an interview scheduled, also for Queens, NY on 04/20/2020, but was descheduled on April 1 because of COVID-19. Have not heard anything since then.

While offices are temporarily closed, USCIS will continue to provide limited emergency in-person services. Please call the USCIS Contact Center for assistance with emergency services.

    Thanks for that.

I called USCIS. The tier 1 representative was not helpful at all.  Every question I asked was met with just a "No." with no other explanation.  I asked to speak to a Tier 2 representative. They said there was no point because they would just tell me the same thing, but I insisted anyway. He also gave me a hard time about calling when I still had more than 30 days of status left (I have 33 days left, and USCIS offices are closed for at least the next 36 days).
The officer (Tier 2) I spoke to was more helpful, but gave evasive answers.

Eventually he said that I should call up after Memorial Day (Memorial Day is on May 25th, so call on May 26th) and they might be able to get me an emergency appointment before June 1st (the day my I-551 status expires), but he couldn't guarantee it. And if I call earlier than that, they won't be able to help me.

I asked if there was any law or other literature that I could show my employer to reassure them that I would still be in status, but he said no.

  13. Our situation is similar to a lot of previous posters, although now COVID-19 has thrown a wrench into the proceedings.

We applied for my I-751 in October 2018, and got a notice that it had transferred from Vermont Service Center to National Service Center on March 3, 2020.

We applied for my N-400 in September 2019, and got an interview date of April 20th.

Obviously, that interview has been descheduled until further notice because of COVID-19.

My issue is that my 18 month extension of my 2 year Green Card/I-551 expires on June 1st. My employer is asking for proof that I will still be in status beyond that date or they might have to let me go.

I know that I should be in legal status. Is there any specific law or place on the USCIS website that I can point them to to prove that I can be legally employed beyond that date? They won’t exactly accept “someone on VisaJourney said I am” as sufficient proof!

USCIS just announced that they will be closed until at least June 4th, so getting an I-551 stamp is impossible.

  14. Replying to this to bump it up, as I am in a similar situation.

My status expires June 1st. My interview was scheduled for April 20th, but is now de-scheduled, and will likely not happen before the expiration date. And the USCIS offices are closed, so there does not seem to be any way of obtaining an I-551 stamp. I'm not worried about my status in the country, but my employer is worried about employing someone who is not in status. Is there any information that I can give them to reassure them that I can still be legally employed?

  15. Have some updates on my application, although I have since received an email saying that my interview has been cancelled because of COVID-19 (even though my date is outside the time when their offices will be closed).

    I-751 Timeline:

10/03/2018 - Sent I-751 to USCIS via FedEx
    10/09/2018 - I-751 received by USCIS

10/15/2018 - Check cashed by USCIS

    10/19/2018 - NOA1 I-797 issued - 18 month extension letter

    11/02/2018 - Biometrics Appointment issued for November 23, 2018

    11/23/2018 - Biometrics Appointment
03/03/2020 - Received Notice that case has been transferred from Vermont Service Center to National Benefits Center in Missouri for faster processing.
So I went over 15 months without hearing anything until two weeks ago.

    N-400

09/09/2019 - Sent I-751 to USCIS via FedEx

    09/12/2019 - N-400 Received by USCIS
    09/16/2019 - I-797C Notice of Receipt of N-400 issued

    09/21/2019 - Biometrics appointment scheduled

    09/24/2019 - Biometrics Appointment

    03/09/2019 - Interview scheduled for April 20, 2020

I assume that they would conduct a combination interview for both I-751 and N-400.

On March 18, 2020, I received a letter with this notice:

    Dear Stakeholder,
Effective March 18, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is suspending routine in-person services at its field offices, asylum offices, and Application Support Centers (ASCs) to help slow the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). This suspension of public service will be in effect until at least April 1.

We are sending you this notice because we have cancelled your upcoming appointment, interview, or ceremony. Please refer to the chart below for instructions on what, if anything, you need to do:

If you were scheduled for a naturalization or Green Card interview: You don’t need to do anything. We will mail you a new interview notice when normal operations resume.

  17. Hi Everyone,

Have not posted on this thread yet, but I figured I would add another set of stats to the list.

We applied for my I-751/ROC in early October 2018.  Got my biometrics date quite quickly - the day after Thanksgiving 2018, and have heard nothing since.  When I enter my case number into the case tracker, I get the My Case Status does not recognize the receipt number entered. Please check your receipt number and try again.  Nothing has changed in 13 and a half months.

In the meantime, we have applied for my N-400 this past September when we were in our 90 day window.

    I-751 Timeline:

10/03/2018 - Sent I-751 to USCIS via FedEx
    10/09/2018 - I-751 received by USCIS

10/15/2018 - Check cashed by USCIS

    10/19/2018 - NOA1 I-797 issued - 18 month extension letter

    11/02/2018 - Biometrics Appointment issued for November 23, 2018

    11/23/2018 - Biometrics Appointment
Have not heard anything since then.

    N-400

09/09/2019 - Sent I-751 to USCIS via FedEx

    09/12/2019 - N-400 Received by USCIS
    09/16/2019 - I-797C Notice of Receipt of N-400 issued

    09/21/2019 - Biometrics appointment scheduled

    09/24/2019 - Biometrics Appointment
Estimated completion time according to My.USCIS.Gov - May 2020

I'm in New York City, and my Service Center for the I-751 on the last correspondence I received was Vermont.

Have any others had this long a period of time without hearing anything at all from USCIS on their I-751?  As I said before, not only has it been a long time with no contact, but my case number does not show up as valid in the case tracker. I chatted with an agent using their online chat function, and he said that he could see my case, but that I couldn't open any inquiry into the delay unless it went longer than the normal processing time, which currently, is 19 months.

  18. Hi guys,

So, I'll give you the background. I came to the USA on a one year J1 visa at the end of 2009, and towards the end of that visa, my new employer applied for a H1-B visa on my behalf. This was approved in December 2010, and runs until October 2013. I was sent my I-797A along with a new I-94 card confirming the dates.

However, I never got a H1-B visa stamp in my passport, as I didn't realize that was a thing I had to do. I booked a vacation home, and am due to leave in two days, and am worried about potential problems at immigration when I try to get back in.

Does anyone have any idea if there is anything I need to do, and if so, what should I do to resolve this?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
