Well if you want to delete my posts, go start finding your own SSN answers. You have killed the goose that laid the golden eggs. Go find another SSA employee. I don't need to be here, but I have stayed to help. Over and out.
-
Where the hell did my post go? You big bunch of pussies.
-
LOL... yeah the person asked for it but I told him I couldn't find it hahaha. Also right before I left he showed me a print out that contain my name, dob, immigration status:permanent resident and my address.
they also gave me this paper. do you think that the 2nd paragraph means that my card will contain the same legend on it? see picture attached to this message.
Thank you for your time!!
To be sure, call the SSA 800# (800-772-1213) and review your SSN record. If your application has been processed as a permenent resident the IDN code on the new record will be the letter "H". If it is an "H", the card coming will be an unrestricted card.
-
I did that today... but I asked the person and he told me my card will continue to have that legend "valid to work only with DHS...." so is he wrong?
Yes, the person is wrong. If you applied, hopefully the person coded things right so that you won't get another restricted card. Plus, I hope you didn't give them your SSN card. If you apply and they ask for the old card, say the dog ate it. LOL Do not give up the old card until you receive the new one.

I would say get a new passport in the name on the permanent resident card
RM 10212.001 Defining the Legal Name for an SSN
https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110212001
B. Evidence of legal name
2. Foreign born individual
A foreign-born person’s legal name is the name shown on his or her immigration document (includes hyphens and apostrophes).
The only time you may process an SSN application in a name that does not agree with the name shown on the immigration document is if the person legally changed his or her name after the immigration document is issued.
a. Name on immigration document and other evidence for an SSN are different
When the name shown on the immigration document differs from the name shown on other evidence submitted for an SSN, process the SSN in the name on the immigration document as long as the name can be derived from the other evidence (e.g., foreign passport).
RM 10212.160 Examples of Name Corrections on the SSN Card
https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110212160#g
G. Name on Numident different from name on immigration document
Alejandro Gomez applies for a replacement SSN card to show his legal name Alejandro Gomez. The last Numident record shows his name as, Alex Gomez. He submits to SSA his Form I-551 (Lawful Permanent Resident Card) showing his legal name Alejandro Gomez. Alejandro explains that he changed his name to Alex to Americanize his first name.
The current immigration document is evidence of the legal name per RM10212.001 and evidence of identity per RM00203.200. If all biographical information on the immigration document and supplied by Mr Gomez agrees with the Numident (including an NL2 line, if present), legal name and identity are established following RM10212.150 C and the name correction can be processed. NOTE: If the most recent Numident was established after 12/17/05, when SSA's legal name policy became effective, or the immigration document was issued before the most recent Numident was established, request the SSA microprint to determine if a legal name change is indicated. If the microprint does indicate evidence of a name change (e.g. a marriage record or court order) was submitted, delete the current application and issue a denial letter stating sufficient evidence for the name change was not submitted. Evidence of a legal name change following RM10212.015 would be needed if a new application were filed.

Raleigh, NC office is horrible. Especially the supervisor there who was rude and condescending and implied that my fiance was already working without a SSN.
E-mail SSA and let them know:

Include your phone number.

So, my fiance's POE was happy and easy and we have been together for the last week and a half and it is FANTASTIC.
However, today was very frustrating. We went to the Social Security office to apply for a SSN and even though we had all the information about K1 visas printed out, the woman AND her supervisor refused to give him one, saying he needed an EAD. Even on their computer screen, it said that K1 was authorized to work-- the K2 and K3 cells in the database underneath specifically said that authorization was needed. But, both the woman AND her supervisor said we needed proof from immigration, and got all snotty with me when I politely tried to explain.
At which SSA office did this happen?

Hi!! My cousin applied for a job online. She just got her ssn 3weeks ago. So she put her ssn on a company site and guess what, it said, SSN is not valid. When her friend put her application and ssn, it went through!
So what are the possible reasons why hers was invalid? It didnt start with 00 or anything.
If she applied with SSA and they issued her a card and gave them the number printed on the card, the problem is with the company site. Back in June SSA went to what they call Randomization, were they assign SSNs from the pool of all available numbers, rather that the available numbers in your SSN Area, which was based on the zip code you provided on the SSN application. I assume the company verification system hasn't been updated, so they are saying the SSN Area doesn't match her zip code, or the number has a Area number or Group number within an Area that hasn't been assigned. Employers used to use the High Group list to try to tell if a number was valid, but SSA no longer updates that list.
See if the number was on the last High Group list SSA put out in June:
http://www.ssa.gov/employer/ssnvhighgroup.htm
Area Group Serial (AAA-GG-SSSS)
-
SSN Example:
1 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 8 9
Area Group Serial
If a Social Security number was assigned after 1972 and before 06/25/11, the area number is determined by the ZIP code of the mailing address provided with the original application.
As of 06/25/11, numbers are assigned from the pool of available numbers, but are still issued in order within the Area and Group from the available numbers. Numbers within the 800 Area range have recently started to be issued. Chances are that the 900 Area range numbers aren't going to be used, since ITINs start with 900 range numbers.

I did get my social security number, but this was before I got married. Now, I'm married and want to have my name changed with my husband's surname, but they told me that I need my green card first...
OK, so you either go back to that office to speak with a manager, or try another office.
-
From and including: Sunday, July 17, 2011
To, but not including : Monday, September 19, 2011
It is 64 days from the start date to the end date, so you are still eligible based on your K-1 status, but your window of opportunity closes in 12 days.
You either go back to that office to speak with a manager, or try another office.

Who can I contact to find out what's going on and what's taking DHS so long to verify my information?
Send an e-mail to SSA:
http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/ask
Explain the situation, and include the application reference number, for example, 11200123456. You might need to play with the number to get it to go through, for example, 11 200 123 456, or spelled out the numbers, one one two, etc.

I'm curious: what advantage is there to changing a name on the SS card before AOS is adjudicated?
Most states match the driver's license application info against the SSN record, so the driver's license will need to be in the maiden name. The name the IRS uses to verify the name on the 1040 comes from the SSN record, so taxes will need to be filed with the maiden name. If the EAD comes and she works, the employer is supposed to use the name on the SSN card/record for the W-2.
Get it changed ASAP.

Don't worry about the SS-5. When you apply in person it is no longer used. Take your I-94, passport and if you have it handy, your birth certificate. After they enter everything onto the computer they will ask you to look over the info. Make sure everything is correct, name, DOB and address especially.

First thing which SSA office was this?
Next send the e-mail:

Make sure you list that you have K-1 status, the office where this happened and your phone number.

RM 10212.001 Defining the Legal Name for an SSN

In these situations, the legal name is the name shown on the evidence of the name change.
The marriage certificate not having married name is no big deal.
RM 10212.055 Evidence Required to Process a Name Change on the SSN based on Marriage, Civil Union and Domestic Partnership
https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110212055
B. Evidence of new name
Accept a name change document based on marriage, civil union or domestic partnership as evidence of the new name to be shown on the card, if the new name can be derived from the document.
Any of the following changes to the last name, using the names shown on the evidence, are permitted:
-- bride takes the groom’s last name;
-- groom takes bride’s last name;
-- spouse takes the other parties’ last name;
-- spouse takes one part of the other parties’ compound surname;
-- compound name (with or without hyphen) of each spouse’s original surname for either or both parties
D. Example of acceptable evidence to process a name change based on marriage
Lisa Foster submits evidence of the name change event, her US ceremonial marriage to Bryan Lee-Walsh. She wants to change her surname to a compound surname, Foster Lee, with only part of Bryan’s surname. Since this new name can be derived from the prior names shown on the marriage document, the marriage document is acceptable evidence of the new name. We may also change Lisa’s surname to one of the following if she requests it:
-- WALSH,
-- LEE-WALSH (or reverse, with or without space or hyphen),
-- LEE FOSTER (with or without space or hyphen, Foster Lee could also have a hyphen or not have a space)
-- FOSTER WALSH (or reverse, with or without space or hyphen)
-- FOSTER LEE WALSH (in any order, with or without spaces or hyphens)
The marriage document can also be used as acceptable evidence of identity, if it shows Lisa’s prior name (Lisa Foster) and either her age, birth date, or parents’ names, that matches the data on the Numident, and if the marriage took place within the prior two years.
This is the one that woman needs to explain to you. Name on SSN record can be corrected even if you don't have work authorization, so why can't you do it when your I-94 is still valid.
RM 10211.605 Request for a Replacement SSN Card Obtained for a Nonwork Purpose
https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211605
A. Correcting Numident data when a replacement card cannot be issued
If the alien does not provide evidence of work authorization or a valid nonwork reason, explain that we cannot issue a replacement card.
1. Alien provides documentation supporting the change
Although the FO cannot issue a replacement card, you may correct the Numident if the alien provides documentation supporting the change (e.g., a name change).
If the alien provides documentation supporting the change, process the replacement card application to update the Numident information but suppress the issuance of a card.

Social Security is work-related. They should know exactly who is and isn't allowed to work in their country.
What paper said she was work authorized? Does it have aform number.
The Social Security Administration has zero, zip, nada to do about work authorization. When any alien applies for an SSN, SSA verifies his or her immigration status by accessing immigration data, or contacted them.
-
Most people who work at the SSA are not very knowledgeable.
You cann't blame this one on SSA employees. He or she shouldn't be asking work authorization related questions to SSA employees. He might as well had asked them how to put up wallpaper too, and I guess the SSA employees would have been dumb if they gave the wrong info.
-
And volunteering?
You can't volunteer if the position is one that is normally a paid position. Making coffee at Starbucks, No. Giving out coffee at the Red Cross, Yes.
-
For the SSN, did she check off on the DS-230 to be assigned one? If she did and it works, she should have an SSN and card within three weeks of arriving.

Thx for ur help. I will give it a try in another social security office and let us c. Hopefully, they accept the application today as we have to flight back to Canada in 5 days.
I think you are going to find that most office are not going to do anything until you have been here three weeks.
Why in the world didn't you check off on the DS-230? I suggest that everyone check off on the DS-230. If it doesn't work, you are no worse off. After three weeks you go apply at the SSA office.
No SSN - frustrated!

I haven't been on here in a long long time, but thought I would look at how SSA is doing with issuing K-1s SSNs. Looks like almost seven years after I retired from SSA not much has changed.
