  2. Thanks for the replies guys, it seems that without steady income from employment I won't be granted a secured credit card regardless of savings I have in my account.

Adding myself to my wife's credit cards will not raise my credit score, it will only benefit hers if we pay on time.

I applied for the Capital One secured credit card online and was denied straight away as you have to tick an option of if you are employed/unemployed and subsequently i chose unemployed and was denied.

-Just a side note the bank branch manager told us you should only charge 10% of your credit card limit per month when you want to building credit and improve your FICO score, charging out everything on your cc actually hurts your FICO core, even if you pay ontime in full! They want to see you paying back the money you borrow not living off credit for everything.

As for buying a car, I don't want to finance the buying of the car and especially don't want to lease one, guess I can pay cash from a private sale but don't wan to buy a lemon!

  3. Guys, I've been in the states about 6 weeks and have received my SSN and a drivers license, and my wife and I would like to buy a house in New York next year, and I want to start building up my credit rating.

So I went to the bank and they refused to give me a secured credit card for $250 even though I have over $140k in the bank that I transferred over from Australia. (Banking with TD)

They said because that I am currently unemployed ( I'm looking after my 6month old daughter while my wife works as an Registered Nurse) that I don't have a regular income to pay off the credit card. Which is crazy as I have ample amount of money in the bank......

So we thought I can start looking for work but I will need a car to get to job sites (I'm an electrician) but we couldn't buy a car from a dealership because if you pay with cash they also do a credit check???

How do I get my credit rating up or started??

This credit score garbage is crazy....seem the US revolves around credit!

  5. I just sold my property in Australia and I researched the best way to transfer large sums of money internationally and the best way is to transfer it with a company called Ozforex. The australian dollar has dropped from $1.05us cents to about $0.91 in about 8 weeks.

You will get the best rate through Ozforex and not through banks, plus no fees with Ozforex.

As far as buying a place, i would wait til you are over there so you can have a look at the neighborhood and the schools. I know here in long Island, one of the suburbs we are living in, the property taxes are $18,000 a year! Thats insane....but the area is nice so you are paying to live in a nice area.

We have looked into buying here but are having trouble, even with a large deposit ($150k) all because i have no credit history.

    Goodluck!

  6. Yeah very brave, i sent my packet 3 info into the Sydney consulate 3 weeks ago and still haven't received my interview date....and I'd imagine the interview date will be around 7-8 weeks after that.

But in saying that who knows....there is no order on how applicants are processed it seems, some people get approved quickly!

I agree, have your fiancé send the I-134 NOW!

Also you will need your case # to book your medical in Sydney...and this might take awhile to get an appointment.

    Goodluck

  7. Hey If you cant remember how many times or what dates you entered the states, write on an additional sheet of paper something like :

Question 25 - When and how long where you in the states...

    1. 2005 - Multiple visits to the US - All less than 3 months

    2. 2006 - Multiple visits to the US - All less than 3 months

    3. 2007 - ...and so on

They know you are canadian so it wont be a problem

  8. Hey Riss,

I paid mine online. I went to my local post office and they had no clue what to do. I didn't want to risk them somehow stuffing it up so I said not to worry and paid online.

Yes, you already have a scheduled appointment. I didn't do the 'schedule appointment online' thing. Just make sure you print off a receipt for them to sight that payment has been made.

Hi i was wondering if you could help me. I am waiting for my packet 4 and interview date and would like to pay my visa fee in advance but im having trouble paying it online. I set up my profile but when selecting my visa type I have no idea which visa im applying for....the options don't suit my visa. I just want to pay for the K-1 VISA thats all.

This is the screen shot of the part where im confused. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Step 3: Please select a visa category that applies to you.

  9. Hi, I have gone through (and am still going through) a similar situation to yours.

Id been dating my US fiancé for about 3 1/2 years when she became pregnant in the US in May last year. So I stayed with her for just short of 3 months on a tourist visa over the summer (but I had been living in Canada before that) and returned to Australia. But before I left we started our K-1 Visa process, in which we sent in all our I-129f documents.....I was back in Australia for about 5 months and basically missed all of her pregnancy and because our NOA1 wasn't approved for almost 7 months I decided to fly back to new York for the birth (which I missed by 24 hours - she gave birth while I was on the plane) and stayed for another 3 months to help with our baby. Im currently back in Sydney waiting for my interview....should be issued any day now.

Personally I think you should apply for the K-1 visa now and stay in New Zealand and earn money while you can and when she is nearly due to give birth (1 month before or so) come back to the states on a tourist visa and stay just short of 3 months and then return home to NZ for your medical and interview and by then your whole visa process will be almost over.

That way you can have time to say by to family friends, you can be with her when she needs you the most - cause having a baby ain't easy. The whole visa process is bullshit in my eyes....but its the only way. Why risk the future of your wife and child by ruining your chances of living in the US. Do it by the book so to speak and youll be fine.

Its a long process but you have your whole lives together....all the best!

If you need any info let me know. Cheers

  11. Hi guys, My fiance requested a letter from her employer for the Affidavit of support, now she is a Registered Nurse and working in a hospital in the New York area and has only been employed for 2 months. The letter from her employer actually came from a third party company which deals with giving them upon request, but the thing is it only states her hourly wage of $28ph and that she is employed in full-time employment but the letter does NOT mention an annual salary.

    Will that be an issue?

We have all her pay slips (5) and her tax transcripts for 2010, 2011, 2012 but she only earn't $10k per year as she was in college.

My question is, is the $28ph enough proof of earning enough? (which works out to be around $53k per annum)

  12. Guys I have a question about car insurance. My fiancé and I recently bought a new car to which she is driving and insured under but im not as I am not living in the states yet.

When I was living in Canada I was quoted $6000 for car insurance because being an Australian I had no driving record in Canada. I wasn't allowed to transfer my driving record to Canada.

Does anyone know how car insurance works in the states?

    Thanks

  13. I enquired about transferring my superannuation and was told I couldn't access the funds because I was still classed as an Australian Citizen and therefore could still have the option to retire in Australia, so the funds would be available if I wanted to come back here...makes sense I guess! Just don't forget about your super when your turn 65!!

  14. Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone in Australia has recently completed their medical before receiving their NOA2. My fiance and I are anxious to have everything ready to go for packet 3 as soon as it arrives. Thank y'all for all the help, this website is amazing!!!

Hi, in Sydney they wont let have the medical done without your case number....Some people said you could but i called them up and was told i couldnt until i had my case number.....7 months later i just received it.

  15. This whole process of waiting for our visa is beginning to become a joke! Why are people's petitions submitted in August 2012 being processed before July filers?? Even if we call to find out the status of our petition, they cannot even tell us. Beyond frustrated! We can't even send an e request because according to USCIS website, we are within the processing times. The website date is stating July 2nd and our processing date is July 17th! However, we are seeing people who petitioned mid August who have been approved.

On top of it all, my fiancé and I are raising a 3 week old baby. I wish they would just give us an answer! Otherwise we are seriously considering moving to Australia.
