  1. Hi, I also had to get a Canadian police check and if you do it directly through the royal mounted police it will take at least 4 months to have the check done. They are so so slow, still stuck in the 80's. What I did is had it to done through this company www.fingerscan.ca/ . They mailed me a form, went to the police station, had fingerprints taken then put them in a per payed envelope and had the police mail it to fingerscan. Had the results mailed back to me in 3 weeks.....hope this helps

  2. Ok ill try and clear this up for you.

    1. You have to go to your local police station in your state with the form from the AFP website, fill it out and print it off.

    2. Go to your local police station, give them the filled out form and have your finger prints taken. A fee of $42 i think.

    3. Take with you a pre-paid envelope addressed to the AFP in Canberra(address is on their website) and have the police post your finger prints and form. The reason your taking an envelope is that the police cant by law give you your own fingerprints...God knows why! But your finger prints need to be sent to the AFP in Canberra so they can run your prints into their database to see if you have a criminal record or you have stolen anything! lol

    4. As far as fees go, its $99.00 to have your fingerprints processed by the AFP.( I paid this fee at my local police station and they put in my receipt in the envelope) But you also have to pay your local police station $42.00 for having your fingerprints scanned.

Its $139.00 if you live in Canberra and have your fingerprints scanned and processed by the AFP cos they are located in Canberra!

    Hope this helps.

  3. Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone here has applied for a Canadian Criminal Record Check from within Australia? I lived in Canada for 2 years and require one for the K-1 visa. I have done my AUSTRALIAN police check(awaiting results) and have sent off for my UNITED KINGDOM Police Clearance check. But the Canadian Criminal Record check states that you have to send your fingerprints via mail, but in Australia the Police arent allowed to give you your actual fingerprints?? Confused on how to obtain them!?!?!

    Cheers guys!

  4. Hi guys, I'm Australian and I lived in the UK for 2 years and also Canada for 2 years on Working Holiday Visa's and now I am applying for the K-1 visa and I will now need Police Criminal Background checks in both countries for the NOA2. I'm based in Australia at the moment and while Canada is pretty straight forward in getting the background check (I can get my finger prints taken in Australia at a local police station and mail them to Canada) the UK is almost impossible to get any information on which department you send it to or application forms...If anyone has gone through that process I would love the help! Cheers!

  6. Hi guys, my finace and i are starting to fill out the I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiance and we have encounted a problem, Item number 12 on the form is asking for my I-94 number but I didn't receive the green form at my port of entry (buffalo) as I am in the Visa Waiver Program, nor was my passport stamped. I know i have to leave with in 3 months on the tourist visa and I will complete the remaining forms in Australia and wait for approval before coming back to the US on the K-1 Fiance visa. Is putting my Visa Waiver Program Application number enough? Any help will be greatly appreciated ! Cheers

  7. Hey, some really good posts here and a great deal of info here so thanks for easing my fears (and to a lesser degree stressing me out a little :). I do have a few other questions that i hope all you members can answer. So here goes:

    1. What were your experiences in obtaining credit cards and home loans with banks without a credit rating/score?

    2. Are there any taxes when transfering large sums of money from Australia to the States like say for over $150k?

    3. How often do you guys go back home to australia to visit?

    Thanks guys.

  8. Travis and Meghan - my girlfriend mentioned we should just go to the courthouse and get married with just her immediate family then we can plan our big wedding (dont know how my girlfriend will be able to keep that a secret from her friends ha)but i always thought that was a bit cheap but it sounds like its the most logical....

LynJer - Yeah there could be worse places to live in the states than on Long Island(Long beach), its really nice there - i saw another poster who moved from Aus to Buffalo Ny - ha if my girlfriend lived in buffalo - i wouldnt have moved there in a million years!!! Oh and Montreal to NYC is about 6-7 hr drive.

  9. Hi guys, Its my first post here and im really glad i found this forum. I can totally understand how everybody feels. Im from Sydney and ive been with my American girlfriend for about 3 years now and we are thinking about getting engaged and applying for the K1 fiance visa. Of those 3 years i have been living in Toronto - Canada for nearly 2 years (spent 2 years in England prior to coming to Canada). I met my girlfriend in Spain while backpacking and she lives in Long beach in New york which i have visited well over 20 times and spent months there at a time and its an awesome town right on the beach and only 45mins to NYC and i have no problem moving there but what scares me most is just the job security. Im an electrician by trade and licensed in Australia and Canada and my license isnt really recognised in the states and im worried about what ill do for a job as i dont really want to do a 7 year apprenticeship again. And the wages are so much lower - (45k-50k) a year. And just the distance will be hard from family and friends....it is tough isnt it!

Also i have a question about getting married? - How did you guys go about planning a wedding when the time line about getting approval varies so much from people to people?

    Thanks guys...
