  1. Nigerwife are you sure of the naming of this? My husband was at immigration with his brother for passport and asked they had no clue what they were saying and thought it a joke especially when they said no cost.

This sure is the first I heard of it. How long ago was this?

I'm not sure Nigerwife is the "official" name, but that it how they referred to it in our local immigration office in Plateau State. It is a version of the CERPAC visa. Which, as dwheels76 pointed out, is a residency visa status. I got mine about three years ago. It is still valid and I most recently used it on a trip in March of this year.

http://www.immigration.gov.ng/index.php?id=7 Scroll down about mid-page where it talks about Special Immigration Status.

  2. I'm sorry, but I would never recommend drinking water directly from a tap or well in Nigeria. The water is not tested and there are many waterborne diseases rampant in Nigeria and you never know when one could be in your water source.

Bottled or "pure" water is not that expensive and worth your health. I have lived in Nigeria for four years and NEVER drank straight from the tap or even cooked with tap water. Even my husband does not drink the tap water (regardless of the source). For that matter, he won't drink it here in the US either!

  3. If you are married, you should just take your marriage license as proof and be able to open a joint account (unless the rules have changed). My husband was able to add me onto his account before we were even married. We have joint accounts at GTB (both Naira and Dorm/Dollar accounts).

In regards to the visa vs. passport issue. Once you are married you can get an indefinite Nigerwife Visa for no cost. I have one, it cost us nothing and it never expires. They even allow me to use the Nigerian resident line at immigration at the airport sometimes. Depending on which flight you are on and which airport you fly into sometimes this line is shorter or cleared quicker.

  4. It depends on where you are flying from....

Sometimes it is cheaper to fly out of a airline hub-city (New York, Atlanta, Chicago, LAX, etc.). I am in the midwest but flying out of New York is much cheaper. I have found it is sometimes cheaper for me to find a domestic flight to New York and then book my New York to Nigeria flight separately. Just be sure to give yourself enough cushion for connections, delays etc.--especially if booking on different airlines.

I use www.vayama.com to compare rates and then usually go to the airlines site directly to book.

  5. No worries about the mailing address, you (as the Petitioner) will be copied on everything important regarding your case and as NigeriaorBust said, they know the postal service is unreliable and don't typically use it.

Regarding giving birth in Nigeria, rest assured that millions of women have done it before her! I gave birth to our son in Nigeria in 2010 and this is what I told myself over and over again. There were no problems at all and it was a very empowering experience for me. There are competent doctors (Nigerian and foreign) to be found in Nigeria if you take the time to do your research and ask around.

On a side note--I'm surprised you are having a hard time finding a reliable internet cafe in Ibadan.... It is a major city (the 3rd largest in Nigeria) and should have plenty of options.

Best of Luck to you on this interesting and often challenging journey!

  6. You can do a wire transfer, but the recipient has to have a US$ account (or Dorm account). You cannot transfer it into a Naira bank account. Your US Bank will tell you what details they need. Usually account details and bank SWIFT code, etc.

  7. You should check out the Embassy Reviews for Vietnam to get country-specific feedback as each country is quite different.

You can find them in the light blue bar at the top of the home page for VJ under "Reviews: Embassy/USCIS & POE".

  8. We had our 1st interview in Lagos on December 13th with high hopes that our family would be reuinited before Christmas. Sadly-We were issued a 221(g) requesting more evidence and within days sent an email as instructed to schedule our 2nd interview...and were given an interview date on March 7th.

That was frustrating to say the least! So I reached out to my Congressman with our story and asked for his assistance in getting the date moved up to when I would be in Nigeria visiting in January. (That trip was actually originally scheduled for two weeks ago but postponed to next week due to the nation-wide strikes in Nigeria in early January.) Even if he wasn't able to assist I figured at least then the Consulate may realize that we are real people and that someone out there cares about us.

My husband received a call from the Consulate today saying that he should come on February 1st for his interview! Which just happens to coinscide with my new visit dates!

I just wanted to share this small victory in our Journey!

  9. for Nigeria it is the same cost for single and multiple entry visa. in fact it is just visitors visa, meaning it is not like the UK system which has general visitor visa, premium visitor etc and each type has different fees.

for the U.S. the validity of your visa is at the sole discretion of the consular officer....few months or the maximum which is 2years.

Guess that's changed since the last time I got a Visitor Visa for Nigeria! It's been a few years though, as I have a Nigerwife Residency Visa now. Happy Travels! I just had to reschedule my trip for tomorrow as the strikes are wrecking havoc with the international flights, etc. I'm going to try again for early February.

  10. Most people don't realize the decision really has already been made before it arrives at CO. Imagine all the touches and reads and notes in your file. So many CO's don't even bother thats why I don't care what anyone says frontloading is the order of business. So I may have delayed this process. but so glad I didn't just submit without being fully loaded up.

I so agree with you! I wish I would have found this site before we filed....but alas, here we are.
