  1. I have been trained in firearms since I was 8 years old by my EXTREMELY responsible grandfather. He absolutely 100% made sure that myself and any other family members that came with him to the range did not touch a single weapon before we had safety drilled into our heads. I am not afraid of guns, I respect them and the power they have to do harm when mishandled. In a perfect world everyone would be responsible and guns would only be needed to hunt for food. The world isn't perfect (big revelation). Guns have already pervaded our society and to ban them at this point would only lead to responsible citizens remaining unarmed while those less responsible in society continuing to own them and use them in terrible ways. I would hope that no one on this message board is stupid enough to think that guns being banned would actually lead to people not having them. This country is too large to scour every household to remove contraband weapons. Sure, future purchases of guns would more than likely reduce crime instances and this is of course a good thing, but I do not believe that it would in any way be that hard for anyone wanting a gun to find one on the black market. Our forefathers saw fit to include in our constitution the right to bear arms, believing that it was necessary for citizens to be able to arm themselves in a time of attack or revolution. There will always be people who want to do others harm, and whether they use guns or another weapon, they will find a way to inflict that harm. It's statistics. Blaming this entire issue solely on guns would be irresponsible.

  2. Yet gun control is a bad thing.

Yes, because we all know how good criminals are at following rules and regulations with regard to contraband material. This topic was intended for support and information about the event, not grounds for a debate about gun policy. Feel free to make your own thread if you feel that is a topic that needs to be addressed at this time.

2 people have been confirmed injured with the possibility of upto 15. The gunman is apparently dead.

I don't care. I'll debate it here as it is QUITE relevant to the situation that has occured.

Look at all of the mass shootings that have occurred in the last 5 years. The problem is that the guns are easily obtained due to lax laws regarding the purchasing of guns. Because the gun is available, they're able to shoot and kill people. I really can't think of a better time to discuss the problems with the gun culture in the US.

Then feel free to debate with yourself or anyone else comes through, since, personally, I'm tired of being egged on by you.

  4. Come on guys! it looks like Obama has a fair chance of becoming the US president...the most powerfull position in the world! are you seriously more interested in a personal flame war than discussing this issue?? *sigh*

Don't you know VJ? ;) There are members live to simply piss off other members off while pretending like they are really trying to make valid arguments.

Note: This is a generalization and is in no way directed at any individual.

I tend to think Obama probably did not personally sanction said flag (it isn't as if he would know the instant some of his staff put up something potentially inflammatory in one of the many campaign outlets). I think it probably just refers to this whole "change" mentality and him potentially being a revolutionary in the USA.

  5. I know James likes last.fm because you can vote on what music you like and don't like and it customizes future playlists for you. I haven't really gone through it but he is BIG into music and he likes it so I assume that is must be something good :) I think you can still listen to iTunes radio without an ipod, right?

  6. Paul McCartney has more money then entire countries will ever need. I don't quite understand why he didn't get a prenup. Kind of feel like she really put one over on him.

I feel sorry for him in a way. No matter how famous or rich he is, in the end, he's just an old fool.

I don't understand why he didn't either but then again, he was in a marriage that really was a "to death till us part" so he may have simply believed that that is what would happen this time. Although, he is so rich and probably has SO many advisers that it is surprising but he may simply have refused.

Something ain't right with her though....I don't know if it is gold digging, actually being slightly insane, had good intentions but fame has gone to her head/she couldn't handle it. Either way, something strange is happening.

  7. I was joking about the playing on the street. I'm sure someone could come up with manageable roller blades. The sound of the blades on ice gives me the willies :P Although that doesn't stop me from supporting our local hockey team. (Go Chargers!)

Damn you and your sarcasm! I agree on the sound. Like nails on a chalkboard.

They have yet to come up with an adequate sarcasm smiley. 99% of internet debates could be ended/prevented by that smiley; it's like the holy grail.

  8. EUUGHH that story just absolutely freaks me out. I had the misfortune of coming across the pictures of the player that has his throat slashed years ago and it most definitely scarred me. I've always thought those skates were dangerous - although I don't know what a safe alternative would be.

Street hockey. As I have lived my entire life in the deep south, we played a lot of street hockey.

I myself have enjoyed a few games of street/back porch hockey in the deep south but I don't know if many people would want to go line up on the side of the street to watch some NHL games ;) On a serious note though, would roller skates allow the same movement that is allowed on ice?

Rollerblades are much more reasonable to use. The problem is with sudden stops and reverses. It's not as easy on asphalt. And it doesn't need to be on a street. They play it in skating rinks in some places.

  9. I am not saying that those that enjoy it shouldn't, not for one minute. Just for me, it lacks any real pace or substance. The questions that are 'in the air' just don't seem important enough to sustain the momentum. However, that is just my opinion. At least you guys talking about it made me give it another go. ;)

Yeah it definitely isn't for everyone. For instance, I can't stand shows like Seinfeld and other sitcoms where they are always putting people in extremely uncomfortable situations or showing completely illogical responses to things. My husband thinks it is hilarious but I just so mad and yell at the tv!

  11. I watched the first few seasons of this but I got bored and hadn't watched it for ages. I tried watching it again this week and just think it's really slow. It's like the Oprabama campaign, you think there should be something to it, but it's a clever illusion.

I dunno, I mean I won't argue that it doesn't feel slow, but then again shows cannot give it all away in one shot. It isn't like a sitcom where the problem is resolved in each 30 minute or 1 hour increment, it is a long slow story that they are trying to spin out. If they gave away too much people wouldn't be clamoring for more the next week. It is definitely a delicate balance to know how much to give and how much to hold back in order to keep fans coming back for more.

  12. yeah I knew they were flashbacks as well and it seemed pretty clear that there is some conspiracy to make everyone think that they all died. Completely unrelated, but did the redhead girl (the new "rescuer" who got shot) annoy you? Something about her rubbed me the wrong way. And I definitely groaned about the whole polar bear thing - what is up with their polar bear obsession!

I think the polar bear thing was to give us a clue that they are after Dharma facility on the island (and therefore Ben, the sole survivor of the "Purge") rather than the rescuers. I don't think there is more to it that that.

The new red headed girl is rather annoying, although her accent reminds me of home (East Anglia). :D I',m also really enjoying this season, I can see the potential there for a great ending to this now. It's starting to make a little sense, finally!

Yes, but there are a few more seasons to go so you know that this is only a taste to let us think we know what is up but then they will turn us on our heads again!

  13. Great, now Total Eclipse of the Heart is stuck in my head :P

This will be very cool to watch!!

 well total eclipse of the moon probably has a whole nuther meaning

 Speaking of the moon, last night it looked like a giant toenail clipping in the sky :P I don't know which is better, a "moon" or a toenail! :P

  14. It stands to reason that human activities are not the only influence on the global ecosystem.

After all we might not cause a drought, but through overfarming in a drought season we can create a desert.

Exactly, which is why all of the "OMG the world is going to end and it is OUR fault" people make me want to scream. I see nothing wrong with trying to make our world cleaner and nicer for all but assuming that we have sole (or even a large percentage) of control over the entire environment is silly. It's just scare tactics to try and leech money from people.

I should perhaps clarify what I mean. I believe that human activities are damaging the environment on a global scale - mass farming, deforestation, strip mining etc... (I mean... how can it not?) but I don't believe that the Earth is some sort of hermitically sealed science experiment. I'd be surprised if climatologists believe that either...

I agree with you absolutely. Of course what we do is going to change the environment somewhat, making it either more pleasant or less pleasant (but we can't really know what it will be like in the long run, can we?) but I don't think we have the phenomenal cosmic powers (:P) to destroy the entire earth like some people make it seem.

Well with nuclear weapons we could do that. Theoretically...

We could kill everyone, sure, but wouldn't the actual planet still be here? I'm sure some funky new lifeforms would come out of that ;)

  15. That is absolutely horrifying. How could you possibly mess up and mistakenly put the child into the mothers personal items bag. It should not have even been in the room after the miscarriage occurred; I would think standard procedure is to either dispose of the body (at such a young stage) or inquire as to if the parent wanted to make any arrangements, not wrap it up to go :P

  17. ANDERSON, Ind. -- An Anderson woman was arrested this week on suspicion of letting her 11-year-old daughter drink alcohol and smoke marijuana on the child's birthday, police said.

Davita N. Fuller, 26, was arrested Wednesday on a felony charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The girl alleged Fuller gave her the alcohol and marijuana and offered it to three of her 11-year-old friends during the child's birthday party at Fuller's home Feb. 1, police said.

The girl claimed she took one drink of alcohol and puffed on the marijuana once, and that her friends declined her mother's offer, police said.

The three friends corroborated the girl's story, Anderson police Detective Joel Sandefur told 6News' Cheryl Jackson Thursday.

Fuller told investigators that she was smoking marijuana and drinking beer with her adult friends at the child's party, but she denied giving those things to her daughter, police said.

"Fuller claims she gave her daughter a certain look that has been interpreted in past incidents that she (victim) is to leave the room when adults are smoking marijuana," Anderson police said in a news release.

Why are there so many psycho mothers??? Whether the mother gave her daughter the drugs or whether she was smoking marijuana with other adults @ her daughter's party is still very sick!!! She needs psychiatric help either way! The mere fact that she's on drugs that is already cause for alarm!

There aren't. The good ones simply don't make the news.

  19. anyone watched last night's episode??

i haven't yet but I did watch the first few minutes and I was like, "WHAT THE HECK??!!!"

I think I am going to grab something to eat and watch it now.... will be back later with my thoughts on the episode :P

Yes!! My entire thought at the end was ####### just happened. I don't know if I like all these new twists and turns - I want a little more information!! Although, a little more probably wouldn't be enough cause I want to know everything :) They certainly have me hooked and I thought last night was very interesting, albeit frustrating.

So did Jack actually know that Juliette and Sayid were in the woods with guns to their heads or no?

    yup

I figured out pretty quick that those were flashbacks.... because I remember someone saying that the outside world thinks they are all dead... someone staged the crash in the water to look like everyone had perished from Oceanic flight

watchign online is not an option we live in the woods, our internet is the same as my internet in brazil back in the 90's

so they repeat the hour prior to next episode next Thursday?

    yup!

yay!! thanks thanks. I'll even task it at work so it'll remind me before i leave :P

yeah, I just checked out the TV guide and they will repeat this weeks episode before the new episode next week

Ah...fascinating. I didn't quite get that (in reference to what I originally asked).
