Drivers From Other Nations

Georgia recognizes valid driver licenses issued to and held by residents of other countries as long as the "Out Of Country" license is valid. You do not need to apply unless you become a resident of Georgia. If you choose to become a resident the following policies must be met in each tier:

Tier 1

All drivers from other nations, including Canada, must pass Georgia's written and road test to be issued a Georgia driver's license.

In accordance with the mandate contained in 42 U.S.C. Section 666(a)(13)(A) and notwithstanding any provision of Title 40 relating to motor vehicles as now existing or hereafter amended, the Department of Driver Services shall require an applicant for a driver's license, a commercial driver's license, a learner's permit, or an identification card to provide to the Department of Driver Services the applicant's social security number or certification from the Social Security Administration that the applicant is not eligible for issuance of a social security number because he or she is an alien not authorized to work in the United States as part of the application.

Every applicant for an initial drivers license must provide acceptable proof of identification. Board Rule 375-3-1-.02, specifies one of the following items are acceptable but must be Original or a Certified Copy:

Original birth certificate (State issued) State Vital Statistics (Hospital birth certificates are not acceptable).

Certified copy of birth certificate (Issued by Vital Statistics with affixed seal)

Certificate of birth registration

Certified copy of court records (adoption, name changes or sex changes.)

Certified naturalization records

Immigration I.D. card

Valid Passport

Military identification card issued by the United States armed forces.

Tier 2

Every applicant for an initial license must prove either he/she is a U.S. citizen or legally authorized by INS to be present in the U.S. If the identification document presented indicates that the individual is a U.S. Citizen (by birth or naturalization) then Tier 2 has been satisfied.

If the identification document presented indicates that the individual is a Non-U.S. citizen then a valid document from INS must be presented. DDS Examiners currently accept any INS document that indicates the individual is currently authorized to be present in the United States.

Tier 3

After meeting the requirements of Tier 1 and 2 the individual must present proof of a valid residence address. Board Rule 375-3-1-.02 specifies one of the following must be presented as proof of residence address:

Utility bill with valid Georgia residence address

Bank statement with valid Georgia residence address

Rental contracts and or receipts

Employee Verification

Georgia license issued to parent, guardian or spouse.

Where are you in Henry County? We are in Henry County as well and there are other VJers here too.

You can drive on your Canadian license until you become a resident of Georgia then you must change it within 30 days. "Resident" means living here, not necessarily having the immigration residency approved. You will also need to register the vehicle and get Georgia plates within the same time frame. You will definitely need a SSN, proof from immigration that you are here legally - and they will only issue a license with the same length of validity as that proof so you may have to wait until you get your EAD card to get a year license and you also need proof of your residency address in the US - we used a bank statement.

It used to be easier but so many States have clamped down on illegals getting access to Driver's Licenses recently that it has made it more difficult on those who are here legally to get them as well, Georgia included. You would get your Driver's License at the State' Departments for motor vehicles (DMV) - the one for Henry County is one in Locust Grove but there is also one in Forest Park (Clayton County). Here is the link for the Locust Grove office: http://www.dds.ga.gov/locations/dllocations.aspx?csc=94

Depending on where you live in Henry County you would apply at the County tag office servicing your area ("tag" means 'license plate", btw) or the DMV office. Your fee is actually a tax that is determined by the value of your vehicle. You will need to have proof of US insurance. Here is the link to the Georgia DMV: http://www.dmv.org/ga-georgia/department-motor-vehicles.php

You will need to do an eye exam, a written exam and a driving test before you will be issued a Georgia license, and you will have to turn in your Quebec license - it is illegal in Georgia to have more than one Driver's License in your possession.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
