Exporting our dog to america

hi,

i have been sending off requests for quotes to export my poopie over the past week and today i got an 'estimate' back...which has made me question this as one i recieved previouly told me my poopie had everything she needed except her rabies injection...this company i heard from today requests different! HELP! prior to recieving this estimate i contacted airborne pets in USA to ask what they knew and there was no mention of further injections needed...

bear with me...lol...

now, last month, i took her to the vets and asked the vet to give her everything she needed so she can be crated up on the day and boarded on the plane all ready for her flight to her new home, the vet was a little unsure if there was any new regulations as to exporting dogs to america so she called DEFRA...(LMAO) who after her describing the dog and the situation was asked 'and what kind of snake is that' now, i know my dog is a slippery pooch...but she definatly has fur! she said to the woman on the phone ' you so obviously cant help me any further' and hung up laughing!!

my poopie has had her 'annual injections' and is microchipped and had rabies injection in october...she doesnt (apparently) require a pet passport as she, like me, will not be returning to the UK!

i requested glasgow airport as this is where i will be flying from (the company did inform me that i would save £250 if i flew her from edinburgh so she could stop off in germany for a short visit...nope...i want her on the same flight as i am on and i certainly dont want to divert to germany!)

i have attached the 'estimate' i recieved today. the highlighted red are what my poopie currently has been injected for, does anyone else know if the rest is actually needed, the vet seems to think that the rest is only for entering australia.

has anyone here sucessfully exported their pooch to america without all these 'unneeded' injections? can anyone here advise me on exporting my poochie please?

Contact the airline carrier for advice for allowing animals on board. I have read several members on here that have travelled with their pets.

try this site for info...but I am pretty sure most DO allow pets to travel, whether in the cabin or cargo hold.

http://www.petflight.com/?gclid=CIeNpr3G3Y8CFQspFQodcSDm7A

And..I don't think they paid that much for a pet but I don't remember.

Good luck.

Three words of advice from an owner of a very-well travelled pet:

Get. The. Passport.

You never know where your future plans are going to take you. You never know what is going to happen. Very few vets in the US are familiar with the DEFRA requirements and it is NOT something you want to risk if you have to go back.

I know you're going through the visa process; I know right now you're saying "I'm not going to go back." So did we. We had to leave our pets behind when circumstances dictated that we go back. Don't make the same mistake - lay out the extra time and expense now!

DO NOT USE THE PET CARRIERS!! If you fly with Delta or NWest you can take your dog as accompanied baggage for $100. You still need the formal vet certificate, vaccinations and an approved transport kennel but trust me it is no hassle at all. I received loads of quotes for my lab and I fail to see how the carriers can justify 1200 pounds for something that I managed all in for approx 250 inc the extras. The websites for those two airlines have good information on travelling with your pet, you do however need to book your flight direct with the airline.

Do not worry too much about getting your dog in to the USA, it is far easier for them than us suspicious humans I can assure you.

Dont worry about the non standard vaccinations until you get over here. Heartworm testing is needed when you get here as it is a nasty mosquito carried problem.

Bess is now enjoying her retirement here in Florida and is a million times better off for being here too.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Hi Selly

Your post is very encouraging  ! We have a lab and a cat to move, although not until Feb so we still have some time.

We'll be travelling with AA most likely and I will contact them, but can you tell me where you got the 'approved transport kennel'? Also, did anyone - vet or airline?- give you advice as to how to ensure the lab was happy/ healthy on board the flight?

Thank you!

hi, thanks selly...

i have been looking into this alot since i got that quote above, i feel that pet export companies are only here to rip us off.

for anyone else who is looking at transporting a pet to america (and beyond!) ive added what i have found out.

what the pet requires:

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/animal.htm#dogs

the KENNEL or CRATE:

has to be to IATA (International Air Transport Association) standard, contacting pet exporters to purchase one of theirs is not a good idea...they add on about £60 - £80 plus a delivery cost. some export companies build their own to your pets measurements...personally i would go for the *google* VARI KENNEL type of carrier, at least you would be getting your monies worth! (for them to build a kennel would cost nearly as much as the varikennel) make sure your pet measurements are accurate as the airline is strict on the pet comfort issue, you can find out here

Kennel info

the two airlines which selly mentioned...info here...

NWA

Delta

(so far ive found that continental, british airways and virgin only use export companies)

hope this helps anyone

She was so cute...got her cheap too cos the breeder was interested mostly in show dogs, and of course long hair is considered a 'fault'.
