I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure out where to get certified translations in Beijing. I want to get some of my "evidence" of having met in the past two years -- our apartment lease with both signatures, utilities bills and the receipt from the engagement ring -- translated. I've been to two agencies but they both were questionable. At the most recent one, the man in charge didn't speak a word of English, and, despite their website saying specifically that they do certified translation of documents needed for visas, he had no idea what I was talking about. When I asked the US embassy, they told me to go to the Public Notary Offices (å…¬è¯å¤„ gongzhengchu). But was already there -- twice. And the notary office told me that they would not notarize anything meant for the US government. I'm so frustrated!

Has anyone here gotten a certified translation done in Beijing? Where can I go? My boyfriend (or one of many friends) could just do the translation himself. But where can we get it certified? Thanks for any advice.

You do go to the gong zheng chu office and the result is what we call a "Notarial Translation". Just ask them to translate the document to English. No need to mention anything about the US. The Consulates will accept translations from the gong zheng chu.
