Covert action would be appropriate in this particular case. For example, The US funding of an insurgency to unseat Ahmadinejad. This strategy has worked well in the past.

You mean like against Castro and Chavez?

Didn't we already try that once in Iran, and it lead to some Islamic group or something taking over? ;)

I wouldn't call our actions in helping Afghanistan in the 80s a success, unless by success you meant 'essentially gave a young bin Laden the training and understanding he needed to foment a religiously-based terror group years later.' The Taliban in 1996 overthrew the government (such as it was) the U.S. had helped (sorta) earlier to establish. I mean, the Taliban didn't need our help to police the area afterwards, but that's not really a success. That's not wikipedia, that's just how Afghanistan went down. I was reading about it in college back in 2000. Of course, the talk was worries about civil rights then.

In any case, #6, the talk lately is reminding me of the ramp up in 2002 before going into Iraq. I think it would be a bad idea to go into Iran, and I don't want to think the administration is that foolhardy, but I thought the same thing in 2002.

Yeah that 1953 coup led directly to the 1979 revolution and the Iran-Iraq war. Iran might not be a nice place, politically speaking but their distrust and dislike is understandable. Of course now they're run by an extremist government that won't listen to reason - as with Iraq that puts us in a $hitty position with limited options. All because BP objected to wanting to nationalise its oil industry.
