Passport Name Change

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to know if anyone knows how to go about getting my married name in my passport and how long would it take.

I wanted to get my name changed in my passport before I go to my Interview on the 19th. Hoping that they will then issue my visa under my married name as right now all of my paperwork is under my maiden name.

BTW I originally filed under my married name and they sent me an RFE stating that it should be in my maiden name since my passport is in my maiden name. THAT SUCKED!!!

I just had my name ammended in my passport, this was early 2005 but I think now the rules have changed and you have to get a whole new passport... someone else might know for sure...

Note: It is possible to add a spousal surname observation to a valid passport that was issued in your surname at birth. As there are no standardized forms for this procedure, this service is available by forwarding the passport issued in the surname at birth, with a letter requesting the service and the fee of $12. A copy of your marriage certificate must also be submitted.

looks like you can still ammend your passport... all I did was go the nearest passport office because I didn't feel comfortable mailing my passport.... they said they would mail me my passport but I said I needed it in a week so I had to go back to the passport office and pick it up... you might have to go to a different office to pick up your passport though, well at least that is what happened to me in Vancouver...

That depends on whether you've been married before or not...

If you have been married before, you have no choice but to get an entirely new passport.

If you have not been married before, you can get your new surname added as an observation to your existing passport. All you have to do is send the passport, a letter requesting the changem your marriage certificate and $12 to Passport Canada

When I called the passport office. I waited almost 1/2 an hour on hold. They told me that I needed 2 pieces of ID. Drivers license and Helath card to get my married name on my passport.

Problem is that I don't have anything in my married name as everyone requires the original marriage certificate. My original is in Montreal. =)

Also, I was married before but I never changed my name with my first marriage. I take it that won't be a problem?

I am going to go into the passport office on Saturday. (the one in Brampton is open on Saturdays) and see if I take a copy of my marriage certificate and a letter if that will be sufficent enough. I just don't want to have to pay extra $$ to get my green card in my married name.

I should have done this. Since I didnt, my CR-1 was issued in my maiden name, since that's what my passport has. I've decided that I'll just wait until I apply to remove conditions and THEN ask them to change my name, since they'll be issuing a new card anyhow. Until then, I can unofficially go by my married name. Or I may hyphenate for the time being, so that way some of my stuff can have both names on it.

I have a feeling it'd be a huge pain in the ### to get my greencard changed.

Yeah, if your passport is in your maiden name, you can have the observation added... you do not need a new passport.

However, I still think that thay will issue the visa in the maiden name if you only have the observation. However, I think that you can have the card done in the married name at the POE. Just tell the officer that is what you want done.

I would suggest you to go to the one at Central prkwy and burnhamthorpe they hv same day service for a fee and brampton shll mail u the pssprt

i had a similar issue earlier

all my docs for the visa appln has my middle name

all ID's including the canadian pssprt (which i got yday) has just the first and last name..

my interview is on 28 Apr 06

I did a name affidavit at the commissionaires office with a pic on tht saying both names are of the same person..

the comm's office at Dixie rd

so i can go to the interview with peace as it was bothering me much

That's cool... but the card is created when they fill in a form to do that... so you can change your name there... but if they'll do it for the visa, all the better...

Passport Canada re: name change thru marriage

Married surnames

To obtain a passport in your married surname, submit:

* an application form completed in full,

* a proof of Canadian citizenship,

* supporting identification in your married name,

* the photos signed by the guarantor,

* the required fees, and

* any valid travel document, if applicable.

You may be requested to submit your marriage certificate in support of your request to have your passport issued in your married surname.

You may no longer add your married name as an observation on a passport. If you wish to obtain a passport in your new name, you must apply for a new passport.
