Connecticut Driver's License?

I know there's a couple Canadians now living in Connecticut. I've checked on the DMV's website and it seems they treat Canada as an out-of-state license (good) and they require proof of legal status in the U.S. (good), but I'm not quite sure what we'll do once C.'s I-94 expires. Right now he's just using his Canadian license, but by the time he's able to apply for a license he's going probably going to be past the K-1 window.

Has anyone had experience using the NOA from AOS in Connecticut?

I'm also confused as hell about insurance. We need to insure his car and register it in Connecticut, but can we do that if the car is in his name but he has a Canadian license?

We had NO problems getting my CDN license changed over (on K-1). They treat it a CDN license as an out of state license. I brought my passport, marriage license (for the name change), birth certificate, piece of mail in my name at new address, SSN, and my PEI license & proof of CT insurance (I brought my accordion file folder from the K-1 interview too just in case I forgot anything they might possibly need :P). I also had a letter of experience from my insurer as well as my driving record from my Province (they didn't look at either). We changed my license early on because i think somewhere on the DMV site it says out of state licenses only are legal for 30 days in this state. They will give you a CT license on a K-1 visa .

The only trick with me was that we could only go on Saturday to get the license and they have to actually fax over the request to USCIS to make sure they have authorization to issue the license. They don't respond very quickly on Saturday so I had to go back on a different day (waited 1-2 hrs and then left). Also, they had to issue the license 2x's for me once in the name that was on my CDN license (maiden) then another time in my married name. I came home with only one license though. They kept my PEI license.

As far as insurance goes, that was very easy as well. State farm was very happy I had my letter of experience from my insurers (going back 5 years) + my driving record from my home province. with both of those pieces, they only added a very small premium to add me to hubby's insurance ( I didn't have my own car). The insurance company used my CDN license no problems. I think as far as which comes first the chicken or the egg, it's insurance first then Drivers License, because they will want proof at DMV that you are insured to drive no?

Why can't you go now while he's on K-1?

Because he's currently in Oklahoma with work. He went right after we were married and they told him to come back when he had a copy of the marriage certificate. So I'm hoping if we bring along the NOA from the AOS we'll be okay.

No problem. It's certainly not a rule to know the location of my husband! I just hope we don't have to wait for a green card to figure out what to do with the car. Worst case I guess we formally sell the car to me, insure under my name, and add him once we get the whole thing sorted out.

Once. They didn't really seem to have a clue. What DMV office did you go to? I'd rather go with an office that's dealt with a K-1 before.

We went to the DMV in Waterbury. They didn't bat an eye really.. It was like it was a non-issue with us. There were TONNES of us in a special "out of state" line.. I think we waited in line for 45 min!
