Newt Gingrich on the War on Terror: "None of you should believe we are winning this war. There is no evidence that we are winning this war."

It's kind of like porno, I can't define it but I know it when I see it. McCain is a RINO. He claims to be a rep and then wants to give illegals amnesty. In that sense Bush is also a RINO. Newt has always been a conservative even when the truth hurt. I respect him for his consistency.

A rep believes in small government, low taxes, the government staying out of the way of business ect. Most reps in Washington are RINO's. Some are worse than others.

Before you accuse me of flip-flopping please note that I have been calling for a clean sweep. I have had it with most of Washington. I am also willing to change the way we do things in the war on terror. But I also don't want to surrender to the terrorists like most of the dems have advocated.

Flip-flopper! :P Gary, you gotta admit, you're not exactly being consistent.

I think you don't read, just react. Do you always do that? I went on to attempt to define what I thought was a RINO.

If that is what I think a rep is then anyone that does not do that is a RINO. Is that plain enough for you?

By that definition, Gary, there are no Republicans left.

Only if you think that the Republican party is so insular that there is only room for people who hold exactly those views. I'd like to think it isn't, but I could certainly be wrong.

Not many, thats the problem. And precisely why I long for a clean sweep. If you want my definition for a true rep then I can only do it by example. To me Reagan is the quintessential Republican. I would like to see all these old entrenched career reps go in favor of a fresh start with some true conservative republicans. It's gotten to the point you can tell the players without a score card. Why do you think congress's poll numbers are down to the teens? It ain't just because of pizzed off dems because congress didn't pull us out of the war or impeach Bush. It's also pizzed off reps because our representatives are acting more like they are in it for themselves rather than for our interests. I have made it very clear that I think all of Washington is a cesspool and needs to be pumped out.

Reagan? Reagan was anything but a man of small government. Low taxes? For some certainly - top tax rate fell under Reagan. And the deficit soared. Bottom line is this: Reagan grew the federal government and government spending more than Clinton. That wold then make Clinton the mother of all Republicans.

I can't see that happening, at least until something is done to curtail the activities of political lobbyists. Clear out Washington - they've already paid for the replacements or are otherwise waiting to shove in their arm up to the shoulder.

Reagan was no small spender. Star Wars was the biggest money-pit imaginable.

Reagan was no small spender. Star Wars was the biggest money-pit imaginable.

He was spending to rebuild the military that was let go because of the aftermath of 'Nam. He also was fighting (and won) the cold war. Reagan didn't make a larger government and didn't recklessly expand entitlements like the dems (and now the reps) did.

In particular SDI was more of a physiological warfare than anything. Reagan knew that it would take decades to bear fruit. That fruit is now starting with systems that are being deployed. But more than that it was an investment in research much like the moon project was. We are still reaping the fruit from that.

Without raking all of that stuff up again - The Liberal/Supply-side economics that Reagan's administration advocated is extremely controversial, as are the results of his tenure.

Reagan also had the Iran-Contra affair going on under his watch, which considering the issues going on today - was scandalous even then.

As for ending the Cold War - Reagan certainly accelerated that, but the Soviet Regime had been rotten for years by then. So it was really only a matter of time anyway.

I can see we have a difference of opinion. I don't know how old you are and I know you were not in the USA when Reagan was prez. I grew up thinking that we were all going to die at any moment. We were totally disheartened by Vietnam and by Watergate. Reagan pulled us out of that and took the fear of nuke war away. Being re-elected by a 49 state landslide says a lot about how he energized this country. To me they should carve Reagans face on Mt. Rushmore. But that is just my opinion and I am sure more than a few would disagree. I would be elated if someone came along like him. Newt is no Reagan but he is closer than any other person that is in the public eye right now.

I haven't really liked any of the US President's in my lifetime - but a lot of that is mostly to do with foreign policy.

We cannot afford someone like Reagan post Bush. If we had another Reagan come in now, we'd be completely fcuked. Always remember that Reagan doubled the government and more than doubled the national debt during his two terms. We need someone fiscally responsible rather than another big borrow and spend Republican with little more than a feel-good message.

Indeed - privatise the profits, socialise the costs. Typical.
