Hello,

Background

  • Answered Yes to all questions related to Communist in K1 DS160, and 485 applications and provided explanations in both interviews. Green card was approved in 2018.
  • Also answered Yes in N400 to the Communist question, Question 10.
  • Also, in Question 9 of N400, stated the Communist Party.

However, I provided an end date in 2018 of the membership. The reality is: I did not go through any official procedure to cease the membership. But I didn't participate in their activities in the past 10+ years. I didn't have an exact date for the end date, so I put in a conservative date in 2018.

Is there a problem? I am preparing for the N400 interview. Thank you.

Just offer the same explanation as you did in the previous 2 interviews , where I venture to guess it included details on membership being compulsory ( or necessary for chance at education/ employment) and the year YOU stopped being active.
Though I would have put that date as end date, you should have no problem explaining why you picked 2018.

Thank you!

The K1 interview officer only acknowledged the fact and didn't ask much if at all about it.

The 485 interview officer had a long list of questions, which caught me off guard given it was not an issue at the consulate, but I answered as much as possible or just said I don't remember. Many months after the interview, I received the approval letter.

I moved to a new jurisdiction and will face a new officer. I heard that one should be out of the Party for more than 10 years to naturalize, so having 2018 as end date does not make much sense. I will consider bring it up to clarify any misunderstanding.
