Tim called around 5:30 this morning and started with chitchat about did I think it would be a good week, etc, and I was like, hey, I love you, but I'm kinda tired, babble,babble, half asleep blah - and he said "I think it's going to be a good week because I got a package from the Embassy this morning!"

And then he went on to say, yeah, they sent his passport with the visa in it and copies of all the paperwork he'd turned in.

I said, honey, how did you know they sent back copies of all the paperwork you'd turned in?

So I directed him to this thread and we'll be sending things back to the Embassy to be resealed. I TOLD him about the envelope, but he was excited/didn't see the passport tucked into the outer envelope/thought from my description that it was a small, literally brown, envelope rather than a large manila one. As someone said in the other thread there, it wouldn't kill the Embassy to invest in a larger red stamp or some stickers or something. Maybe stamp the do-not-open message across the seal? Oh well! What can you do?

Can you believe it! I'm not really bothered, though I've told him I WILL be relating this story at the wedding.

Oh man! On the one hand, so cool he got it, and then, as you so rightly say, D'oh!

It's amazing how many people open it. The COs make a point of saying VERY sternly, "Do not open the envelope, fool!" but yes, an aide memoire like a "DO NOT OPEN" stamp would be useful. There's something along the lines of "this envelope should only be opened by an immigration officer" stamped on it, but it is in a) faint black ink and b) very small type.

Well, I'm glad it all worked out! Sorry he bungled it up a bit by opening the MBE! Oh well, at leats its fixable and you'll be together soon!! Congrats to you both!

Anyone know if he should send back envelope AND passport or just envelope? He's sweating it. I say, better both than get it wrong. THoughts?

edit: nevermind i guess - the extortion line (always to be trusted, right?) advised him to keep his passport and just send back brown envelope, use SMS, etc. phone dude also said to pay for delivery and return and no other fees would be necessary.

so that's what we'll do.

Wow TD, that is such great news. I've been following what is going on and was very happy to see your post! Congratulations!!

Does the Visa section have one of those recommendations or comments boxes? With the fact that this happens so often, it might be an idea to suggest putting two brown envelopes one inside the other with one of those light activated sound cards like you find in birthday cards inside. As soon as the 'unwitting' person opens the first envelope they hear an authoritive voice say 'CAN YOU NOT READ, IT CLEARLY SAYS DO NOT OPEN THIS ENVELOPE!' Having said that I am sure security at airports would love xraying all of these wonderful electronic devices in the mail........... either way the potential made me chuckle.
