What happened when denied entry?

I am curious as to what happens when a Custom officer at an Airport let's say JFK or NJ denies a green card holder access because they have been in and out the US a bit much (although it could be not more than a 1 year). 

Do the officer send you  to immigration detention center while someone decide your case? Do they write you a note and refer you to an migration judge? Or do they give you the option to be deported on the next flight?
