My husband was recently naturalized. Does he have to go in person to the social security office, or can I take the documentation and do it for him? Trying to see if he needs to take off work.

If he did not have his name changed, no need to update.  The social number will be the same with/without name change.

Social number will be the same, but opportunity for benefits change as a citizen, so SS needs to be informed of the change. Strongly encouraged by USCIS at the ceremony.
