"WE'RE the victims of this crime and yet we're being treated like the criminals."

That was the angry reaction of a York mum who was forced to pay a fee of £105 when she let police take her teenage daughter's car away for finger-printing after a break-in.

Teacher Angela Newdick, 47, of Huntington Road, thought the right thing had been done when police were phoned after a break-in on Jessica's car near her home at 1.30am on Monday.

Little did she realise that it would lead to her being stung for £105.

Mrs Newdick said: "The break-in was witnessed by my neighbours and the police were called.

"They (the police) caught the alleged would-be thieves and told us they were taking the car away to be finger-printed. They gave us a card with details of where the car would be and said they would ring and let us know when it was ready.

"I rang the depot in Dunnington on Tuesday to be informed it would cost me a standard £105 Government fee, plus £12 for every day it was kept.

"I was so shocked and very upset. I don't have that kind of money and more shocked that being a victim of crime benefits the Government and helping the police means that the victim has to pay.

"I am outraged by this and feel people ought to know.

"Has this been highlighted before? The police never at any time told us about this fee and we just thought if they were finger-printing the car they would bring it back.

"I am very upset and had to borrow money to get the car back, never mind paying for the mindless damage inflicted on the car."

Jessica, 17, a pupil at Fulford School, was stunned by events.

Mrs Newdick said: "Jessica had only had the car three weeks.

"She'd saved up for it and she's been really stressed and upset by the whole thing.

"The people in Dunnington who had the car were extremely good and very sympathetic.

"They even returned the car to me. I can't fault them, but this is some kind of ridiculous Government policy."

North Yorkshire Police spokesman Ron Johnson said: "This is standard procedure as part of a national Government policy and the money is needed for the recovery and storage of the vehicle while evidence is being recovered after the crime.

"The money can be claimed back from most insurance companies."

Hmmm probably stolen by those with Asbos who will learn nothing in York museum about what happened back in the 1800 when you stole a car (horse & cart)!!

Man, they will tax anything it seems. My favorite is the 20.00 crutch rental fee. I dont think it matters if you broke your leg or were attacked. Everybody pays the 20 bucks.
