Hi. My fiancee's birthday is June 10th. I wanted to send a present of some pearl earrings. Is that possible? Where would I go to get the best information? Can exise tax be prepaid? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Why would you worry about an exise tax? If you're just sending a gift send it, no need to pay any extra fees or taxes. I sent Sheryl numerous gifts when she was in the Phils. If you're going in to the business of exporting jewelry to the Philippines for resale than you can worry about exise taxes.

Hello, that is so thoughtful and sweet of you to send her a gift.

I am a Filipina and now married to a US Citizen just last March. I have lived in Manila in the greenhills shopping center area which is famous for the pearl market and traders and I should say that the pearl jewelry are so cheap in the Philippines compared to the USA.

You may want to consider the risk of the jewelry being lost in transit if shipped from USA...maybe buying on-line from a source in the Philpippines would be a better alternative. But then again a piece of jewelry is a personal choice and may be best to try it on before buying it.

My husband has on several ocassions sent me items from USA and he had paid taxes and insurance for it but I still ended up being juiced taxes and whatever miscellaneous fees in the Philppines and I had no choice but to pay it to claim the shipment.

Hope I had been of some help.

No taxes are collected when you mail/send a package from the U.S., you simply pay the amount due to ship it. Fees for optional insurance vary depending on value or may already be included depending on what service you use to ship. Sheryl did mention she had to pay a fee each time she picked up one of my packages, can't think of anyway to pre-pay that. I just put money in her ATM account from time to time so it wasn't a worry.

I sent Sheryl Ann her engagement ring...after i brought it back and had it resized, because she didn't want it to be done in the Phils in fear of the stone being swapped. I shipped it by FedEx... no extra cost/taxes when it arrived to her. Make sure you state the value (make sure you have proof of value) and it is already insured...at least that is what they told me

Sometimes the postal office/customs will check on your package and see if there is any valuable like jewelry. I, myself encounter such, good thing they were just a gift for Christmas like stuffed toys and some other goodies and even the customs asked me what is in there, and they checked on the declaration coz they were wondering why is it too big. I knew a friend who asked her brother to buy her a jewelry abroad and they declare it as a gift and when she is about to get it from the postal office, the custom asked her to pay additional 2KPHP++ for tax (because they opened it and saw a jewelry) and my friend said no to just return it to the sender.. after less than a mo. they asked her to come and get it... You may want to send it to a reliable courier like FedEx, she'll get it in her doorstep.

I can tell you about my experiences shipping to the Philippines.

I sent a package to my fiancée for her Birthday/Christmas via UPS and believe me they did collect fees even though it was a gift. UPS would not allow me to prepay, they stated the rate is determined and collected in the Philippines. All said and done it was more than 30% of the value of the shipment; I think they even included the shipping fees when determining the shipments total value.

When I sent our interview evidence to her, I used DHL. Since it was only documents, there were not any expenses to my fiancée. But, they gave the package to her aunt who lives in the same "compound" as she.

I have sent letters, cards and books to her using USPS with no problems or expenses, but it takes a long time to arrive and they are actually delivered by the Philippine postal service so I can't vouch for the safety of your package.

Types of duty that are applicable in the Philippines:

  • Import Duty
  • Value Added Tax (VAT)
  • Ad Valorem Tax

I think you should look into it further by checking with your shipper; otherwise your fiancée may unfortunately be paying a bill.

30%! HOLY SMOKES! Sheryl never paid anything more than a nominal fee to pick up her packages from me. I think the last one I sent cost her P250 or so and I valued it at $100.

I checked with FedEx and I can sign up with them so that whatever fees customs may collect, it is billed to me. Then it goes back to FedEx to deliver to her without any other fees. Sounds like the way to go. I already got the earrings and they're nice!!!

  • 1 year later...

same with us for sending to the Phils.

This has been asked in forums of the past, and FedEx is truly the safest way to go.

UPS, and US postal is very insecure. As with posts in the past...many many times packages have been tampered with, and often times just up and disappear. Fed Ex assures that the package arrives, and is not tampered with.

As stated, they will bill any dues that may come with the shippingto the sender here so that no fee is due there.

I sent a diamond ring, and and a few other trinkets, all of which arrived secure as they were sent.

I know of some who have not had the same story...but I have never heard of it happening with FedEx.

And for what it is worth,we sent packages to Manila, and Mindanao with the same safe results.

Best Wishes

If you are sending pearl in the philippines, i would recommend the mikimoto pearl from japan. Such fine, smooth pearl texture.

BTW, there are lots of exquisite pearl in the philippines. For cheaper price but good quality, go to davao and palawan.

I agree with Richard & Maria. My husband now used to send me jewelries when i was still in the Philippines. There was one instance when I ended up paying $150 for tax just to get the ring he sent me thru Fedex.

It was an engagement ring so we had no choice but to pay the tax.
