Given the fact that Microsoft XP, SP-1 is now unsuported, I am concerned about SP-2.

I lost my HDD for the second time in the last 12 months, and now wonder where I stand for the next potential failure.

Are we to believe that Vista is the way to go? I think not, unless they have at least 2 years of trials and patches.

Thoughts?

From what I hear Vista is buggier than an ant hill. I will not be going to it any time soon.

Vista seems very good for a first release MS Operating System, much better than XP when it first came out which was a nightmare. I've been using Vista a lot at work recently and I'm impressed with its stability, and it certainly is flashy. That said it came on a new computer, so I didn't have to worry about hardware compatibility etc.

BTW - I'm a hard core Mac user, so this is no MS fanboy speak.

They will stop selling XP by the end of January of next year. Though their support for the product generally lasts about 10 years after its initial release which means XP will no longer be supported in 2011.

If stay Windows, Vista will be the way to go. Not really out of choice, but MS would rather sell you a Vista license. I use Vista on my laptop, mostly because it came with it. It is generally pretty stable, though it is a bit resource intensive. Bugs tend to be caused by third party drivers and software thats not fully updated for Vista yet. Yes, some OEM's are selling Vista systems with software and drivers that don't completely work.

Vista....argghhhhh!!!! I just started working for a new company and I'm on a brand new Dell - the only one at the company running on Vista and already running into compatability issues.

Man, I can relate - my XP wouldn't boot up about a month ago and when I decided to re-install Windows XP, it erased over My Documents folder. I lost all my music and all the digital pics of my family for the last 6 years. :( I was numb for days...

I just now finally upgraded to SP2. My computer's HD is a discombobulated, friggin mess.

...back to Vista. MS reportedly has authorization embedded in it so that you won't be able to view third party media unless they have an exclusive license with MS. I hope that a class action lawsuit is filed on the grounds that once again, MS is trying to monopolize the market. What a shame.
