It wasn't as bad as I feared, but I have to agree -- the fight scenes were way too chaotic.

Just saw the movie. Surely a contender for the worst movie screenplay ever - I didn't much like Independence Day for that reason, but its Shakespeare next to this!

Even the effects weren't that impressive - seeing as the director can't maintain a camera shot for even 5 seconds, making it almost impossible to follow what's going on without the aid of triple-shot lattes.

I thought it was good - I really felt the scale of robots and action sequences were intense. Shia LaBouf (sp) did a good job. Michael Bay is known for keeping the camera moving - Steven Soderberg does it far more extreme than this.

An interesting thing about the evolution of camera direction in movies. In one of my film classes, we looked at Steve Martin's, The Jerk. The cameras for most of the film are stationary. I think the movement of the camera can add to the effect of the movie, but I would agree if it's just there for the sake of moving the camera, then it's annoying.

I found the screenplay to be abysmal in the extreme. There were simply too many characters who had next to no screentime at all - and they focussed too much on the human characters. As you say Shia LeBouef was ok, but hard for anyone to get out of that movie with any credibility - his relationship with that 'hot chick' was laughable, and so undeveloped it begs the question why did they even bother.

Bay is known for ADD shot-jumping in his films - but it was really ridiculous here. Couldn't appreciate half of the effects work because it was too frenetic. Was particularly bad here - there are no single shots under 5 seconds in length. It was very irritating.

On the other hand the original animated movie was great... and that didn't have anything to do with Earth or human characters... it was all spacescapes and crazy robot judges and Orson Welles eating whole planets! Top stuff.
