Can imagine the huge can of worms that would open – not least with private contractors who handle some of the maintenance contracts. It would be a big mess of “whose liability”.

In the UK we had the opposite problem. Some local authorities would carry out pointless road “improvement” schemes on the basis that if they didn’t spent the budget they were allocated for the year, their funding would be reduced accordingly based on their need. Often these schemes involve the installation of roundabouts where they are totally unnecessary. In my town the council paid some staggering amount of money to have our high street refurbished. Paid portugese stone masons and used imported stone to resurface the high-street. A couple months later, some (different) council department comes along with a work order, and they rip up huge sections of it to replace sewer and water pipes and resurface it with tarmac. Yet noone seems to scandalized by this to do anything about it..

Pretty common, not just in government but a lot large companies too. Lost of waste, and noone prepared to take responsibility and ownership.

That’s even before you get into the argument that public money often isn’t spend on the things it is collected for. If that were the case – the UK NHS would be the best health service in the world.

Same thing here - you've got heavily trafficked toll roads in a pretty bad state of repair. So what's the point of paying the toll?

Bad roads? Sorry guys, can't relate. The roads in my part of Jersey are just fine

And I live in Jersey because I have family and friends here. No other reason.
