Update on the rental car and the continuing saga on our Visa!

Well, we spoke to the rental car company. They said it would be okay. We only had one problem. Dan doesn't have a car so he has no insurance. He can't be put on my insurance because we are not married. So an insurance package added to the rental, plus the fact that he is only 24 made the price for renting him a car $2000.00 US. Needless to say, that is a no go! So we are back to him riding that big grey dog back to Canada and then riding it back after his Visa gets approved.

Now I need to know if anyone has ever shipped their belongings from Canada to the states. Dan has some fairly large sized speakers, his computer, a rubbermaid of memories, and a few other things we would like to get here for him. Anyone know who is the cheapest and what is the best way to go about this?

Also he plans on going up to York Toronto (not sure if this is right) to the CRMP up there to get his criminal background check. We have issues with his name as he has always assumed his middle name was his first name and vice versa. Which is what we put on our application. Now we know because of his birth certificate and speaking to others that his thought to be middle name is actually his first and vice versa.... I told him the best thing to do was get a Canada wide report on both names with his birthdate. Anyone know how much these cost and how long it will take to get back?

His medical is scheduled for May 23rd. This I at least know how it will go and how much it is. His interview is June 1st. All of this is going to drive me crazy. I am so ready for June 2nd lol.

This isn't what you asked, but what hubby & I did was store my stuff at my mums' in Canada, the next time we go up we'll load up the car with the belongings and take them across the border with us. It may work as it doesn't sound like he has much stuff and if he can do without it for a temp time and leave it in someone's basement or attic, it might save you some $$ if you every have plans in the future to go back up and visit.

As far as the criminal background check - they only did one background check with my 2 names. They listed them both on the same certificate. Don't know if that works the same way for guys - but I would assume it would...

He can get an RCMP police check at The Commissionaires in Toronto for $35. Takes 5 business days to get it back.

As for shipping, I shipped my belongings through ABF U-Pack which is probably more than what he needs. I think others used FedEx or UPS for random items. Though I'm not sure if he'd want to ship his computer. If he does, he should disassemble it, pack the cards up along with the HD and bring that with him on the bus.

You can probably use any major shipping company, the cost is a big difference when you want to get it there quickly. If you don't have to get it there quickly I would imagine they are all compareable. If he shipped the non-essential stuff when he first got to Canada he would have plenty of time to have it shipped and arrive before he returned to the U.S.

I just want to clarify this again for future posters. It's not the rental company you is your problem if you are a Canadian resident trying to drive a US rental into Canada. It is the Canada Customs officer that is going to tell that person that he can not drive the vehicle into Canada.

A rental company in Texas doesn't necessarily know Canada Customs regulations. I'm not full of #######, I am a Canada Custom Officer and know the regulations. Sometimes people tend to listen to those that say what they want to hear.

I realize that you are no longer going that route but I want to clarify this for other posters.

Sorry, if I am sounding like a "biotch" but I any here giving my knowlege. If no one wants to listen then I will stop posting help or advice regarding Canada Customs.

Good luck to you.

The names thing should not really be an issue. on the form for the background check, there is a section for "other names used" which should cover that.
