AOS interview successful, but waiting for FBI name check

Congragulations Traditions Way!! Very good news for you!
I'm curious what the difference is between the namechecks that we go through during the K-1 visa process and these one's for AOS. It would seem more reasonable to me to do a more thorough check prior to letting someone in the country, than after they are already here.

visa security checks are done by the DOS and stateside checks are done by the DHS. They only really check someone out if they are from a "list of 26" countries which has had terrorism ties. Otherwise police reports are all the consulate requires. Also the check stateside (AOS) is checking names here for any hits (and as I and others have been told home countries as well - although it has been disputed).

I have a question regarding the differences. I understand what you are saying about visa being DOS and adjustment being DHS. My question is, everyone that goes through security checks for the visa at DOS, do they all get the note printed on their visa of "Clearance Received xx-xxx-xxxx"? When we went through security checks for the visa, we were told he was going through more in depth checks by the FBI. Would that prior check not show up this time around? Or is it not the same department with the FBI doing this one? Just curious....

from what I understand (and this part of the process seems to be a BIG black hole) the DHS wants its own security clearances regardless of what was obtained through the DOS for the visa. The check is primarily stateside (which is why anyone can get stuck - any name hit) which wasn't part of the check for the visa AFAIK.

we were also told that Abdel was being checked by the FBI for our K1 - however I have no idea if this is a different departmet than now. I do know that the checks for visas are very specific programs - such as Visa Mantis, Visa Condor, SAO, Visa Bear, DPT010 (name hit - i forgot the numbers i think) etc etc... the AOS process *sticking point* is simply based on a namehit supposedly stateside.

ETA: abdel's visa did not have clearance received on it, im sure many places do different things. Also the prior clearances very may well show up, but because 1. a new dept is ordering them and 2. they are checking stateside and 3. the programs used for visa approval are not used for AOS approval I would summize clearances before overseas are possibly useless in this leg of the journey. my guess on that one though.

Well I went and setup the portfolio and the last update on our AOS was 3/2/2005, how depressing :crying:

So I've been waiting for the name clearance since my interview on Feb 06. I just got two letters yesterday--one asking me to show up for fingerprints (again), and another asking me to go to the district office to see my case officer about my AOS application. since I already had my interview last year... could this be it? the letter says just to bring my passport.

that sounds awesome to me knitty! they wouldn't contact you if there wasn't any movement, right? I have heard others called for new biometrics simply to issue the gc (while i think there was one other who did do new bio's and kept on processing).

Adding AOS_despair, theresa, caroledfb. Sorry to say - no updates reported of people falling off the list. Seems like interview times are speeding up alot - average last year was around 6-7 months... now we are averaging around 4 months and even a little less.

My husband and I had our AOS interview on 3/5/07 we were told the same thing. He would be approved but waiting on the name check from FBI. Told it could take 6 months but that he checks every two weeks to see if anything yet. So, we just sit and wait and wait and wait. Which is what the INS does best I suppose.
