So the letter expires in April, god knows when our AOS will be approved as we're in the CSC. With no plans to leave the country, and having just applied for Citizenship, is the stamp in the passport necessary?

Probably not.  Though it is worth bearing in mind that if for some reason you had to travel (thinking family emergency or similar, although of course I wouldn't wish that situation on anyone), it can take several weeks to get an appointment to get the stamp.  Given that it's free to get apart from a couple of hours of your time, I would get it just in case.

Agreed; it's worth it if you've got half a weekday to spare.

Moreover, who doesn't like an extra stamp on a passport that doesn't see much use? :)

Immigration ain't easy my friend. We all do what needs to be done, anything optional is your call.

As other have stated, better to have a stamp and not need it, than not have a stamp when a need arises.
