When Dr. Phil started out, he dealt with basically normal people who had basically normal problems. I remember him giving advice on how to potty train two-year-olds, how to get kids to settle down for a nap, how to deal with slightly nosy in-laws (not freakishly obsessive ones, just fairly normal but slightly annoying ones). When you saw his guests with problems, most people could identify with them, or could at least imagine that a co-worker, friend, or acquaintence was going through a very similar issue.

Now, it's just freaks. All of his guests are four or five sigmas away from the middle of the bell curve. No matter how messed up you are, if you watch Dr. Phil, you'll be able to say "well, at least I'm not THAT screwed up".

When Dr. Phil started out, the few year or so was basically themed on families and parenting (with books to match, of course!). Then it was the Ultimate weight loss year. This year it's the Dr Phil house with nutty people to match. Jerry Springer has gotten to the point where it's hillbillies getting their 5 seconds of fame thinking they're cool going on stage with ourageous stories. With Dr. Phil, most of his guests are freaky for real. I DVR Dr Phil so I'm watching part one and two tonight all at once. Should be interesting.

Karen, seriously, I am so glad you were able to get out of that situation and find something a million times better with Joel. :)

Thanks Cheryl...I can't begin to describe how awesome it is being married to someone who treats me like a person...and loves me too! Joel is incredible.
