Hi everyone,

First of all, I apologize if I am posting on a wrong section. I am new here and am trying to figure out the site still.

I have a question regarding applying for citizenship after divorce. Ex and I were together for 11 years plus 8 years of marriage. I received my green card in Dec 2012 (5 years of marriage). We are officially divorced as of Feb 2016.

I am confused as to the timing of when I am allowed to apply for citizenship. I have been getting different answers from you can do it now, you have to wait until Feb 2019 (3 years after divorce), to No, you can never apply because you got your green card through marriage.

I've tried looking for info on USCI web site but I haven't been able to find the exact info and quite honestly, it confuses me even more.

Any help anyone can provide me will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!!!

You can apply 5 years after getting your green card.  Check all residency requirements in terms of number of days younshould have spent after residency or others may update you on that.

At this stage it's little to do with your divorce timeline.

I am not sure why it took 5 years of marriage to get green card...  asking in case there are legal bearings to get your citizenship.

@Auds We waited for awhile because of financial reasons at that time. There was no legal reasons. I entered the US legally and worked legally.

Thanks for the answers everyone. This really helps.

So you are ready to apply now :)
