yeah brother is married so that kinda kills the PR road .....but thanks for the input ... where did you find the medical companys that cover the mum n dad , will start looking in the texas area

I am pretty sure Texas is similar to Colorado, probably most companies will quote. The current premiums will increase of course both for inflation and as they get older.

And then you have to add in all the costs that are not covered. Co Pays, pre-existing conditions, exclusions etc.

Start with your own insurer. They will be differences but you will get enough of a general idea.

Medical costs and the number one cause of bankruptcy in the US, and most of those had Insurance.

Here in MA it is now state law that everyone has to have insurance.... so the state got together with the 5 top insurance providers and they hashed out plans to cover all ages of adult and depending on your income it depends what you pay....

On a side note about pre-existing conditions all the top 5 insurers will cover pre-existing conditions if you had insurance somewhere else.... I called them and asked about people from the UK... they all told me if the applicant can produce their NHS medical card then they will be treated as having been covered under a government plan and will not exclude pre-existing conditions...

Hey they are original Glasgow but in glenrothes fife most of life - i am citizen for about 10yrs - brother wants to come over , mum n dad want to go retire in cyprus but if its quicker to get brother in through them they will apply for the citizen ship etc but not sure if they can travel while doing that ...so its a process of getting infomation just now

Where are you from Niagaenola ?

They can travel, but must maintain the US as their permanent residence. There are also limitations on how long they can travel, all detailed here if they wish to apply for Citizenship:

http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/M-476.pdf

But if the point is just so that there son can move to the US it seems rather painful. They can file as PR's assuming he is not married, but they would still need to set up home in the US for 5 or so years.

Assuming this category remains.

Still wondering what retirees are going to do for Medical Insurance, Prison Guard parents excepted.

My parents will get there own medical insurance.... here in MA there are now lots of plans available to lower income people who cant get Medicare... and as they are coming to live with us, the money from the sale of their property in the UK will be invested to pay for all their medical costs for the next 35 years +

So it is covered...

Hi Kez

I know what you mean about the equity from the sale of your parents property and using it to pay for all their medical costs is I suppose, a good idea.. However what about all their living expenses, ie, home, cars, food ect. even mobiles cost more than expected with the taxes that are added on. Will they both be retired if so,I assume that they will have their UK pensions paid directly into a bank account over here, that is what I do anyway. maybe they will be fine, not being nosy, ez, just wondering??

I too was a bit concerned about the medical side of things but I have just secured a full time job with benefit including 401, vision and dental, so I am OK and we will check out the Self employed for Alan as there is something here in Jaxs that give preferential rates for the self employed, so we should be OK. Whatever your parents do I wish them well , it really is great to be with family

Hi Val

Good to hear from you...

Mum and Dad are going to be living with us... we have just bought a large home with plenty of room for 4 adults.. infact Mum has just gone home last Saturday after being here for 6 weeks so she could oversee the new bathroom they have had installed for them...

Both mum and Dad have good pension, dad was in the Army for 22 years so have his arm pension and he also worked for a large engineering company for since 1980 so he has a pension from them too and of course he has his State pension... Mum worked for the Civil Service for 38 years so she has a pension from them and her state pension..

We have already talked about how things will work when they do get here, we will have a joint checking account for the household bills and Food expenses and each couple will pay half of the total costs into the account once a month. We will have chargecards for the account so when shopping is done it come out of the House funds and then nobody feels they are paying more than the others...

WE already have 2 cars and we only use one most of the time so there will be a car available if they need it, but we have a very good public transport system here in Boston and they both enjoy using it...

I am sure there will be other thing we will need to sit down and work out with them but we are getting our planning done so we can be ready when the time comes....
