My fiancée and I have been living abroad for the past few years, and are applying for a K1 visa for him to join me in the US. I make above the required amount, but it hasn't been in America. I have filed my taxes accordingly. I read on one site that your income must be US based. Is this true? I already have a job set in the US for when I return next month, but of course it won't show up in my tax info right away.

Does my income abroad not qualify for the K1 visa?

It is my understanding that foreign income does not count because USCIS is aware that you would likely not continue to have that source of income once you moved back to the States. I believe you would require a co-sponsor in that situation.

However, if you're returning to the US and starting your job next month and have not yet applied for the K-1, it will be a while before you need to prove you meet the financial requirement, as you don't need the I-134 Affidavit of Support until the interview at the embassy. It is not required for the initial petition (I-129F).

See here for examples of what you could provide at that point to show your current income meets the requirements. You could include pay stubs, a letter from your employer verifying your salary, bank statements, etc.
