EI Issue

After your I-94 expires, you're still going to get cards. At that time you write in that no, you are not eligible to work. After getting your EAD or AOS you are to fax, or mail them a copy of your document, and from that date onward, you will fill in your cards that yes, you are looking for employment, and your money will then again be issued.

The women in Bellville (2 of them) are extremely helpful, and calling and leaving them a message always helps. They'll call you within 2 business days. Before my EI started, they called before mailing my letter out, to tell me their decision and start date of my claim.

I've found them extremely helpful, resourceful, and caring.

Not sure Carla if the office has changed since you've been there. I have NEVER received any documentation from their office (nothing saying aye or nay - only cards).. They only called once to tell me I was approved for benefits, and now they have apparently changed their tune! :)

I put another call into them this week. They said they would make a decision by the 18th and now it's the 25th. Perhaps they are overloaded with work right now, but it is irritating when any office says they will do something and they don't. I'll keep everyone posted!

I applied and received my EI claim approval in April, so yes this has been recent. hehe

I waited for my ROE, which I shouldn't have, and they would not go back to my original date of leaving my workplace (minus the two week wait). I applied on-line at the beginning of March, and that's where they took my claim to. I received checks until the 21 April, when my I-94 expired. I had received one letter from them, and I think three phone calls. I don't know if you're aware, but there are only 2 women in that office that handle ALL out of country claims. I think they're swamped actually.

Thanks for that Carla! I'm sure I sound like a raving lunitic.. but the frustration of having them not return phone calls and seemingly keep giving me the run around on answers to my claim (as well as seeing other K-1 people just zip right through the process with no issues) is quite infuriating.. Of course I understand not having the rescources one needs to do a good job, and if they need a customer advocate to write a letter to "those in charge" i would LOVE to do that for them.. IMO this system and communicating to people out of Canada needs to be improved (esp. communication), and I wouldn't mind at ALL offering some suggestions :)

Good to hear!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
