The appointment of an agent is the first thing that happens.... it is done either using online DS261 or sometimes the NVC person asks whne you are calling on the phone .... until this is completed the next steps of paying the fees etc are  not possible..

Can you add some further information to your question... has this just been done 5 months after your case went to NVC

How much time does it take

assgining agent and paying fees and then? Would they send it to the embassy for the appointment?

No, they sent the application to the NVC on January 2017 and they called today asking for an agent

You need to be proactive in following up with the NVC.. they wil not prompt you...it is unusual for them to call you. Please take time to read the following link about the NVC process.  The time it takes through here depends on how long you take to get the paperwork back to them, whether or not there is a request for informaion after that...
