my children have to earn game time and tv time......... for every minute they spend reading or doing school work they get a minute of game time/tv time... same with chores.

and who are we kidding about being consistent......sure sounds like a good plan. how many of us parents have handed down a consequence in the moment of frustration and then realized later we were too harsh. in that situation i have given my kids the choice of being respectful of their punishment ( no complaining , sneaking, whining )for a shorter period of time and if they can do that then the punishment time will be shortened, otherwise its the time I originally set. ive said " hey i probably overreacted a lil bit there and so ........" how many of us have said to our little ones " if you dont hurry up im leaving without you"? would you really leave without them? i can think of a ton of examples of things ppl say to their kids in the moment but would never really do.

grades! what an issue.........i have grounded my kids for b's with a few missing assigments and gave no consequences for D's with no missing assignments........obviously the D was their best effort where the B wasn't. my 17 year old since getting a cell phone has allowed her grades to slip to E's 3 of them .......she scored a 26 on her ACT , so I know she's not stupid. she's hating paying 50 bucks a month for her phone while it sits in my drawer. she says she didnt make the choice to give up her phone.....i made itfor her and so i should pay her bill. I told her that by CHOOSING to not do schoolwork or apply herself she chose to accpet the consequences for her actions ........consequences that were clearly laid out at the time she got the phone.

bottom line is , we are the ones raising our children ......not their friends , not their friends' parents. children are only young once and we only have one chance to give them all the tools they need to survive life.
