Do I need to apply for I-765 if on OPT

Hello everyone, 

I have a question. Should my husband apply for the I-765 form while he is on OPT? If my husband's OPT EAD card expires, will he be able to extend it or should he just apply for a new EAD card? I'm assuming the EAD card for the rent card process is different?

11/16/2018: Received E-Mail Notification that Form I-765 and I-131 was Received

01/23/2019: Received E-Mail Notification for I-485 Adjustment of Status Interview

02/01/2019: Received NOA2 (Form I-797C), Adjustment of Status Interview, in Mail

02/27/2019: Interview Scheduled at USCIS in San Francisco, CA

03/19/2019: Received E-Mail Notification, Card in Production 

3/20/2019: Received E-Mail Notification for I-130 and I-485, Case was Approved

3/22/2019: Received E-Mail Notification, Card was Mailed

3/25/2019: Received E-Mail Notification, Card was Picked Up by The United States Postal Service

3/26/2019: Received E-Mail Notification, Card was Delivered by The USPS

3/27/2019: Actual Card was Delivered, Card in Hand
