I’ve been living in the United States for over 30 years and still have a green card. I got it through the green card lottery. I’m still a german citizen but don’t have any strong ties to germany other than my brother who still lives there, my entire father’s side of the family (uncle, cousins, etc.) and lots of friends. Reconnecting with them has been easy because of the internet. I do not have a bank account and do not travel to Germany regularly - the last time I went was in 2004. Everyone comes to the United States to visit, and the few vacation days I have we go to visit the in-laws in Ireland. The reasons to keep the german citizen are plenty and obvious. Justifying the need for a US citizenship are easy. I’m a landscape architect and have worked on projects planning and designing government installations. There have been many jobs and roles I’ve had to see go passed me. I think my best hope for maintaining the german citizenship are the following:

My wife and two children hold Irish citizenship and we would like to have the option of moving to Europe some day.

My german is ok. It could be very good if I practiced daily – which would not be hard. My wife speaks german fluently, and there are plenty of german speaking people in my area.

I could easily get ten people in Germany to attest that I am german and could be a valuable asset to the fatherland.

Not so strong reasons:

I attended the German school while living in Mexico. Alexander Von Humboldt.

I've taken a few german speaking business classes.

I follow the german soccer team and Bayern Munchen

Germany is a countries that values sustainability, and my professional background is loaded with planning, design, and construction projects that involve sustainable practices.

What do you guys think? Any hope for me?
