My car has been stuck in Canada since I came to the US last July (2015) as it had a loan on it and I couldn't import it. I finally got approved through a credit union this past week to refinance my car here in the US.

I talked with Scotiabank and they are sending me a release letter once they have received the funds to pay it off (which will be this week.)

I also spoke with Ford customer care about importing and the only thing they can provide me in Canada is a compliance letter stating it is compliant with US standards. The rest(the safety emissions and the transportation sticker) has to be done once I'm in the US.

So far I am bringing with me across the border:

  • Temporary Ontario Permit to drive to the US
  • Letter from Scotiabank stating it has released me of it's loan and has no more interest in the car
  • Letter from the credit union here stating it has now taken interest in the car via our loan.
  • Letter of Compliance from Ford

I have been on the US importing websites reading through everything I can. Does this sound like I have everything or is there anything else I'm missing???

Thanks for all your advice!!!

The compliance letter is all you need, and proof of ownership.

They'll verify VIN, its less of an issue when you are importing a car from the US "big three". Half the time our family does it, the officers go "It's a US make" and just hand wave the paperwork and approve everything.

I called US customs awhile ago to prepare ahead of time, but my question for them was how can I import a Canadian car that's already entered the US. I was told I'd need a bill of sale amongst some other import forms. I'd suggest to have your bill of sale in hand too (proof that you own the car you're importing). If you can, just call and double check! :)
