marriage certificate needed when divorced?

In the UK if you want to revert back to your maiden name following divorce you must apply for a legal name change. It's not something that automatically happens. It is assumed you will keep your married name (if you changed to your husband's name when you got married - not everyone changes their name upon marriage) unless you specifically apply to change it. There is no mention of your maiden name on the divorce decree unless you never changed your name in the first place.

I just went online with HM Revenue and Customs and filled out a form and took my divorce decree into the bank. The council wanted me to pay to change my name by deedpoll but the only place that wouldn't accept my name change was the council. Since I'm moving I didn't bother changing it with them but for everything else I am using my maiden name including my passport.

Good to know! When my aunt got divorced she had to pay to change her name back. She was married for 18 months and divorced for over 60 years before she changed it! She died 2 years later.

Yeah it's just the council that won't change it, everything else has been fine. But since I am moving in 3 months I don't care much about changing my name on the electoral roll.
