For nails, the growing part is under the skin at the nail's proximal end under the epidermis, which is the only living part of a nail.

For hair, there are three phases of growth anagen, catagen, and telogen .

In anagen phase or growth phase, the cells in the papilla divide to produce new hair fibers, and the follicle buries itself into the dermal layer of the skin to nourish the strand.
