My fiancee (U.S) and I (Canada) have been working our way through the K1 visa process, and I've just submitted the DS-160 form online. I now have to go through their checklist and make sure I have all the documents and the only thing I'm missing now is the Police Certificate.

  • POLICE CERTIFICATES: Please obtain police certificates from the police authorities of each country where you have resided for 6 months or more since attaining the age of 16. A police certificate must also be obtained from the police authorities of any place where you have been arrested for any reason, regardless of the length of residence. Residents of Canada may obtain a certificate of no conviction issued by any Canadian police service so long as it notes that Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or the national criminal records repository was searched using your name and date of birth. You should ensure that the search includes all names you have previously used, including maiden names, prior married names, or names used before Canadian naturalization. If a namecheck by a police agency reveals a conviction record, that agency may refer you to the RCMP for a "Certified Criminal Record Check", which lists your criminal history, indicating the section of the Canadian Criminal Code under which you were charged, the disposition of the case, and the penalty imposed (if any). Obtaining a Certified Criminal Records Check requires submission of fingerprints. For obtaining police certificates from around the world, please visit http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/fees/fees_3272.html .

** It is NOT necessary to obtain police certificates from the United States.

Of course the link in the pdf they gave me leads to a "page not found" :/ . I've never been convicted of anything and should not have anything on my record. I'm trying to find somewhere online about where to get one of these certificates, but i'm having trouble figuring out which is correct.

Should I just walk into any Police stations in my city and ask them about it?

Or can I just go online and request a Criminal Record Search Certificate like this link has http://www.winnipeg.ca/police/pr/info_request.stm#crim_record_search

Thanks!

From what I gather the RMCP stopped doing criminal background check a while back. This process has been outsourced to private companies. Montreal and Calgary http://recordcheck.ca/about-us/location/index.html

Rest of Canada http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/who-can-conduct-criminal-record-check

Hope this was helpful.

Note that the embassy only require a name check, not a fingerprint check.

I went to the police station and they told me my only option is to request a 'Criminal Record Search Certificate' which takes 3-4 weeks to receive in the mail...the only interview date available for me is 3 weeks from today :/

The checklist does say

  • Residents of Canada may obtain a certificate of no conviction issued by any Canadian police service so long as it notes that Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or the national criminal records repository was searched using your name and date of birth

Is this something different than the certificate I just ordered and how can I obtain this hopefully quicker than 3-4 weeks?

Yes it does take a few days to get it. Montreal with recordcheck.ca took 2 weeks.
